Brewed Awakenings Bites the Dust

Darn economy. My favorite coffee place went out of business. Tonight after work I drove that extra mile to go and get more beans only to see a sign.

(jist of it anyway)
"Brewed Awakenings Closed 1/31/09. Thank you for the years of patronage. Please support local companies".

Uggg..

Anyone else go there?

I thought Obama said during his campaign that he had the answers to stop things like this?

A politician wouldn't lie just to get votes, would he?

Takes longer than a 2 weeks to change the hole we're in :)

But politics aside it's sad and a bit confused. Places like this are going out of business, the housing market is still down, yet I still see new "business buildings" going up.

hockeyfan, are you for real? pull your head out of your butt.

back on topic, very unfortunate. i thought brewed awakenings would have been alright with the loyal following they had.

I never been there myself; I don't drink coffee.

But just wondering, was this the coffee shop on Central avenue, about 1 block west of Douglas, near Dunkin Donuts ?

yes it was. the location.. so close to the only dunkin donuts in toledo always seemed a bit weird to me

whew, thanks toledoen, head is removed.

I'm just frustrated. A local place that I assume was locally owned and folded. Sad. I guess no bailout for small businesses either.

hockeyfan: agree. It's more than just a coffee place.

Every week the Toledo Chess club meet there, as well as a local Go club. Guess they'll have to migrate down the street to Beaners but ick.

I prefer local owned as well. The people who worked there were nice, helpful, and even fun to chat with on slower days. The owners worked there as well and were very nice people. Beyond the store I hope they are doing well. They definitely don't deserve to see their dreams lost.

What do I need most now? A plastic cup of coffee, or food on the table? A plastic cup of coffee, or a roof over my head? Decisions, decisions. When people aren't sure if they will have a job the next day, they begin to act differently than they did a few months before.

Yes, quite sad to see this. While I was not an everyday regular at Brewed Awakenings, I visited often enough to recognize the important role this business played in the local community. The owners provided a venue for folks singers, artists, study groups, book clubs and all sorts of organic local activities that will need to relocate.

Sure, they can find space in other coffee houses, but the unique charm of Brewed Awakenings is lost forever. The place was more like visiting a good friend's house than buying coffee at a business.

This is a franchise town...always has been, always will be. Now take your yuppie selves off to Ann Arbor, or one of them other pinko communities to get your damn latte-pinko fixes. Real men drink Speedway mud.

When I used to live over by Brewed Awakenings, I was surprised that they opened late in the day. A coffee place that doesn't open until noon? That's like a bar that closes at 5. I bet Beaner's does 85% of it's biz before the lunch hour.

Historymike summed it up well, I agree.

justareviewer: Speedway at least the one by Woodville/280 has pretty good stuff, never heard of it referred to it like that before :)

Maybe someone just spilled coffee on the recipe and ruined it for everyone.

A re-awakening!
New owners/managers will fill the space that was formerly Brewed Awakenings! They have lots of great ideas and will be hands on in the business, and intend to serve the same great coffee and having some amazing events that will truly be an asset to our community! Hope to be open Mid-March. Visit www.MyBrewed.com
