IT IS TIME FOR THE VOTERS OF TOLEDO TO WAKE UP AND SEE THAT WE NEED THE BLESSINGS OF THE LORD ON THIS CITY IF WE ARE TO OVERCOME OUR CURRENT ECONOMIC CRISIS. FOR TOO LONG THE PEOPLE OF TOLEDO HAVE TURNED THEIR BACK ON THE LORD AND WHAT IS GOOD AND RIGHT. THE OBVIOUS CHOICE TO LEAD THIS CITY FOR THE NEXT FOUR YEARS IS OPAL COVEY. OPAL IS A FINE DECENT AND HONEST CHRISTIAN LADY WHOSE PRESENCE ON THE 22ND FLOOR OF GOVERNMENT CENTER WILL SEND A MESSAGE TO THE LORD THAT TOLEDO IS WILLING TO ACCEPT HIS GUIDANCE AND PRESENCE AMONG US. ONLY OPAL CAN HELP TO RESTORE THIS CITY TO THE GREATNESS WE ONCE ENJOYED. OPAL COVEY FOR MAYOR!!!!!!!!

I CAN'T READ YOUR POST BECAUSE IT IS IN ALL CAPS!!!!!!!
HMMMMMM....isn't there something about separation of church and State? Oh, I get it, it's a City office and not a State office. While I commend Opal for not giving up, I fear four years of Opal would do more damage that 40 years of Carty could ever do!
Is Opal still in favor of establishing a city-run Amusement Park, downtown, next to the Maumee river ?
We used to have one years ago, across from the zoo.
Really this post was only just a matter of time. I am so glad to see that she is still out there chasing the dream. Who else is running?
Here is a link to a voicemail I received from Opal Covey in 2005 after I interviewed her for the Free Press (depending on your Internet connection, it might take from 10 to 50 seconds to open the.wav file):
She called me to leave her latest received prophecy from God. I am normally not one to save voice mails, but I'm pretty sure no one has ever left me a Divine Prophecy via voicemail before.
Ah, fond memories of 2005. Reposting :
One of my favorite local photos is this one taken outside the Cricket West Beaner's Coffee Shop on August 28, 2005 after a Meet the Candidates Forum.
My August 28, 2005 comment about attending the Cricket West candidates forum.
By the way, the Opalmobile has its own PA system, which we were priviledged to hear loud and clear after the forum.
Carty was not at the forum. I thought he was suppose to be there. It appeared that Carty definitely had the biggest army of campaign supporters at Beaner's. After the forum, I asked one of the helpers where Carty was. He said Carty would be there at 4:15.
Each candidate had five minutes to win us over. It was warm upstairs at Beaner's. So when this political spew part of the forum ended at 3:50, most of the 80+ people present immediately went downstairs or outside to "mingle" with the candidates or to get out of Dodge. Carty did arrive at 4:15 but few people remained. That's when I left.
Anyway, shortly after the forum ended, I stood outside by Carty's Army, which was near the Beaner's entrance. One of Carty's helpers called Carty to see where he was. Opal was in her car, which was also by the door to Beaner's, and she gave the Carty Army a hard time over her PA system.
Opal broadcasted that she lost everything she owned because of Carty. Opal said Carty shut her business down in the middle of the night. She said Carty stole her mother's ring.
One Carty foot soldier couldn't take it anymore. He moved closer to Opal's car and held a Carty sign up while he talked to Carty on the phone. That only got Opal more wound up.
Opal got out of her car, walked over to the guy, and shoved her own propaganda into the face of the Carty supporter who didn't flinch. I mean the guy was rock solid. While under a barrage of point-blank accusations by Opal, the Carty supporter never changed his facial expressions, he kept his sign held high, and continued to listen to Carty over the phone.
Finally, I chimed in and said to Opal, "He's talking to Carty." The dude put the phone to Opal's ear, and Opal laughed and said, "Oh, he is."
A few minutes later, Carty arrived. Opal was back in her car blabbing over her PA system when Carty made it to Beaner's. She let loose on Carty. Carty didn't waste any time getting inside.
That's why I hung around after the forum because I thought something amusing might happen.
My recap of what each candidate said at the forum. By far, the most entertaining part of that day was after the forum outside the coffee shop.
historymike, no wonder you saved that voicemail, THAT is a Keeper!!!!
No, I can't vote for Opal. Won't vote for Carty but could never vote for Opal. Have to give her credit for her determination and drive though. Then again, she really should "see the light". Perhaps she too was out on that ice yesterday.
I'm sure she has a good heart, but do you really believe that Opal could have a coherant conversation with anyone?
Opal is such a god's creature loving person she once had a "pet store" on the east side that the humane society had to take every animal due to neglect and abuse. Sure, she wanted to help them, but because she took in so many, she couldn't properly care for them.
I hope she doesn't feel the same way about the homeless. We'd have the government building filled with homeless people and getting in there to do anythign would be tough. lol.
She is one report from being committed, but isn't everyone?
I hope the O.P. was joking.
That woman is nuttier than a squirrel turd.
It might be good for the ailing economy. It could create an uptick in eyebrow pencil sales.
^^^ That's funny right there I don't care who you are.
I have met Opal Covey and talked with her several times by her home. She comes off to me as a serious and sane woman who could do a lot for Toledo. She should be given a chance. Opal seems to have far more common sense in her pinky finger than Carty has in his entire swollen head. OPAL FOR MAYOR!!!!!
I listened to her divine prophecy message and I'm not sure that "sane" would be the first adjective that comes to mind.
See if you can get Kwami down for mayor, hes a Democrat so he should be a shoe in for a win.
She's scary. I'm unsure who sounds more unbalanced, Carty or Opal.
I would have to agree with hockeyfan. When I first moved to the East Side and went to look for a puppy..I went to that pet store that she owned, and was totally SHOCKED by what I had seen.
And I can honestly say, I couldn't BELIEVE that woman wanted to run for mayor...
If the way her shop ran was any indication, Toledo would be in deep sludge if she made Mayor!!
Opal seems to be the only candidate running who is not bought by the powers that be in Toledo.
