Maumee Bait & Takcle provides the DAILY walleye "River Update". It's a great resource and it saves you lots of wasted non productive fishing trips to the river.

Use the very light greens with the appropriate green tails. Yellows also work and oranges, carry a good selection of colors.

The bait store site has everything you need to fish for walleye and I mean everything. The owner Gary, really does a good job of educating and outfitting people for fishing. He's a hell of a wildlife photographer too.

A fisherman's tale:

A couple years ago I thought I'd splurged on an expensive rod and reel,(Maumee Bait & Tackle actually) I usually bought cheap or middle of the road gear. With the new pole, on the first cast I engaged a 29 inch long walleye, while on a call-in to Michigan Public Radio engaging 3 cancer experts about why they hadn't addressed the embryonic nature of cancer(known since 1928), and why 18 years after its discovery they hadn't addressed the master cancer gene, telomerase, which switches over 200 other genes to cancer/growth mode, just like in a fetus. I had the cell phone pinched between my shoulder and ear while I hooked and brought in the fish. I only hooked the fish after I finally got through on the call in line, I'd been on hold while driving to the river (cell phone-speakerphone).

A tall tale but a true tale, and so I swear. One local PhD heard my familiar rap on the radio and actually called to congratulate me right after I had the fish on the stringer. A group in a boat watched and listened as I talked on the phone and caught this monster fish, they had been out on the river all day and hadn't had a fish on.

Its pretty unlikely to get on MPR while fishing and pretty unlikely to catch a monster on your first cast with your shiny new 12 ball bearing reel and fancy rod. Doing both at the same time was a treat. It's even more unlikely to have witnesses, but I do. It was a nice very nice day fishing.

If you all wouldn't mind, I have a special "request" for those of you participating in this years Walleye Run. My nephew participated in this for the past several years, but this past fall he passed away in a freak fishing accident down at Mary Jane State Park. If you wouldn't mind dealing with a sentimental Aunt, whose nephew's last breath was taken in the Maumee, when you cast your rod this year please send a cast out for Eric and tell him his Aunt Holly misses him dearly! And if you catch the "big one" with that cast, thank him for passing along his fishing luck to you! From what I remember, he managed to catch quite a few big ones during the runs himself! One of which he was so proud of he had it mounted and it hangs on his parents family room wall now!

Consider it a done deal !!

We're going on a family fishing trip in a few weeks to Dale Hollow Lake in KY. I'll be sure to cast a few out there in honor of your nephew Eric!

While passing the river this morning I saw a lot of boats out.

Thanks so much ALL of you! This kid lived to hunt and fish and although I hate the thought of him not being with us, if anything he at least left this world doing what he loved the most! The Maumee was a part of his life for MANY years, when I got home from work later I'll see if I can dig up some of the pictures I have of his catches.

But thank you, from the bottom of my heart! It means a lot to me!
