Ferrell survives `Man vs. Wild' with Grylls

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Will Ferrell says it was a thrill to join adventurer Bear Grylls for an icy episode of Discovery Channel's "Man vs. Wild."

The channel said Wednesday that Ferrell and series host Grylls spent two days in Sweden's mountains and glaciers for a "Man vs. Wild" special.

With Grylls as his guide, Ferrell rappelled down frozen waterfalls, scavenged for food in the forest - including reindeer eyeballs - and improvised snow shoes from saplings.

Ferrell said being part of "Man vs. Wild" was the "thrill of a lifetime." In turn, Grylls said he did an amazing job in unforgiving conditions.

The episode is set to air in early June, coinciding with the release of Ferrell's new comedy-adventure film "Land of the Lost."

Wonder if ol' Bear Grylls had Ferrell drinkin' pee?

Not so odd. Ferrell is a flabby wuss and Grylls’s show has "wilderness" scenes with cars driving in the background and his staff is close by.

This is true. They are both basically actors so this is not as odd as it might seem at first. Grylls stays in a hotel at night and most of the show is staged. He provides bad survival advice to boot.

If you want to see a good survival-type show, where the host is actually out in the wild on his own, watch Survivorman.

I do prefer Survivorman. That takes cajones to go out on his own like that.

I always get a kick how you can watch him walk WAAAAAAAAAAAAY off into the distance, then know he did it just to get the shot, and that he'll just have to walk all the way back to get his camera!

Survivorman: now there’s a real boy! It wears me out to think about all the extra effort it takes to retrace steps for camera shots.

Heh - great thread. I watch both shows when I need some brain-draining decompression. I think Survivorman does a better job of simulating survival situations that are more realistic and more likely for viewers, but for showmanship Bear Grylls is a little more entertaining.

I do get tired of the urine-drinking escapades of Grylls, though. It seems like he is swigging his own wastes every other show. You have to give him the edge, though, for eating and drinking substances most of us would avoid at all costs.

Yet when Survivorman eats insects or tree bark, he is more human in his commentary. Grylls tries to pretend that tree grubs are tasty, but Survivorman usually tells the viewers when the nasty items are indeed horrid-tasting.

But the most important question: who win the Celebrity Death Match between Bear Grylls and Survivorman?

I put my money on Dick Proenneke.

Actually, Ferrell is former high school athlete who did run in the Boston Marathon. He is/was a member of an adult soccer league in California. Flabby yes, couch potato no.

His rise to stardom and many projects is testament to his energy for sure!

I second Dick Proenneke.

Yeah. Pretty funny. As previously noted, Bear Grylls' image took a big hit after he was caught relaxing in a hotel when was supposed to be somewhere in the wild surviving some challenge. I used to like watching him until that story broke.
