As with some posts, I have to play devils advocate.

Sure, this woman is a good singer. Why is she getting so much attention? Because she is not very attractive and we all expected her to sound as bad as she looks? American idol has worn out the beginning shows of all the hideous singers who now just show up to act as crazy as they can to get on TV. So now the producers of those types of shows are looking for "not so attractive" people who sound great to get ratings.
Agree or not, ask yourself this. If Susan Boyle looked like Carrie Underwood or Jessica Simpson, would she be plastered over the internet and tv. I tend to believe not.

It's about her story. Don't be a buzzkill.

wait for it. somebody's probably giving her a make-over even as we speak. :(

She KNEW she was going to shock people. She said, "I'm gonna make this audience rock!" and she did. everybody expected a clown and got a queen. it's just so cool to have our prejudices slapped back in our faces, makes you ashamed when you realize why you got blown away and you redeem yourself by owning up to it and giving her her due.

I'm not a fan of American Idol but I watched the youtube link. If the picture is the same woman who is singing I dont care. I haven't heard a voice that has moved me like that since the first time I heard Sarah Brightman.

Truly an angelic sound.

Anyone who doesn't "get it" isn't going to "get it" from reading any posts or anythig else for that matter.

It’s TV and the formula worked- again. My first reaction was, as a self admitted male pig “dang, I can’t believe she is the same species as that gorgeous female judge”, next, the forty- seven year-old whom looks sixty spoke in her meek if not quirky voice and style,

then she sang.
My first thoughts were remiscent of Andy Kauffman singing Mighty Mouse on SNL, but that was quickly squashed. Her performance was quite moving.

Is she a great singer with far reaching range and all? No. Could she have been with the proper development? Maybe, but she’s good, real good considering she’s apparently lived in some backwater Scottish village singing in the church choir and Karaoke pubs.

Given the mediocre crap that is popular, overproduced by technicians and sold by lawyers, she’s a rare talent and fairly polished gem. Her story seems wholesome and earthy compared to some lip-sync pri(ma donna) implants.

So far, it's an uplifting saga in which I wish her the best and may she be a living tribute to her mother, enjoy her well deserved time in the spotlight. And thank her for a bit of homespun beauty during these hard times.

It's just one whale of a voice. That fact that it comes from a charter member of the sisterhood of the plain - well it reminds us of how shallow we've become. We've come to expect that the degree of talant has to matched by the same degree of beauty. Shame on us. I hope she doesn't get a makeover. But I suppose it's inevitable.

Not trying to be a buzzkill, but I do not like being "duped" by producers that only want ratings.

She has only sung one song to date and weren't we all "played" or "led on" by the expressions on the judges faces? I'm willing to bet that in 4 months, you'll never hear from her again or she'll join the William Hung group of celebrities.

"...gorgeous female judge”
Yo got that right! I am not sure who she is but she was HOT! all the females in the audience can call me a sexist pig. Thats OK. I have broad shoulders and can take it.

Back to the point...while you may be impressed with Susan Boyle, have you heard Ruthie Henshall? This will give you chills.

Ruthie sings with so much passion!!! u can feel the emotions--sweet cherished memories--then despair--then hatred--then hopeless hoping---then despair!!! god bless Ruthie henshall!

Actually, besides Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood I wouldn't call any Idol winner a beauty.

Carrie is a beauty. Sorry Tony...what were you thinking? Carrie or Jessica?

To me it is the songs. Anyone with a good voice can belt it out, but it isthe music and lyrics that catch you. I remember the first time on WGTE on a Sunday night. That was when I decided to invest in a CD player to get that album. I think the song was appropriate for her "dream".

American loves underdogs, and Boyle is a charter member. I think we're going to see a lot more of her.

No folks, you have to watch the entire original clip from Britain's Got talent.

You see the way Simon rolls his eyes at her and everyone laughs at her. Heck, she even says she lives with her cats, has never been married, and hasn't even been kissed. As soon as she starts singing, everyones eyes pops.

It's the classic story of don't judge a book by it's cover. I watched this clip 5 times on friday, haha.
