Typewriters

Anyone know where in Toledo you can still buy a typewriter and supplies?

I'm about to start looking in the antique stores for one. Looking for something that isn't a super word processor, but not wanting an old 100% metal clunker.

The newer digital versions seem to computerized and aesthetically don't feel like a typewriter. Though I don't want to be sore after 30 minutes of typing using a 50's model tank :). So thought something along the vintage of 80's/early 90's would be good.

Any tips or comments?

INeedCoffee,

Not sure where you can go locally but if you can't find anything I could put you in contact with my grandfather in Grafton, OH. He still operates a small typewriter sales and repair business there.

I know he has quite a few contacts in the Cleveland area but I don't think he has done much work in the Toledo area.

Goodluck with your search. Let me know if you'd be interested in getting in touch with him.

Don't know if you want to go this route, but there are quite a few of them that look like they are in pretty good shape for sale on e-bay.

I should check to see if my parents still have the one I used in high school. (Graduated in the early 90s.)

My mom doesn't like to dispose of anything, and my parents are still a little old-fashioned. I wouldn't be surprised if my old typewriter was still in my dad's home office. (They don't own a computer...Dad was a business owner, and my parents did all the books, etc. by hand until he retired 3 years ago. lol)

Man does this ever bring back memories of typing class in high school! I couldn't get my WPM past 25 to save my butt and barely passed the class. Now, all these years later, thanks to chatting online and places like this, I average 60-70 WPM. Who'd have thunk it? LOL Miss Iott would be proud of me if she knew that!

Sorry, didn't mean to go off topic. I've seen a few, every now and then, in garage sales and pawn shops. If I see one in the near future, I'll let you know!

UT_Ice_Hockey: I'd be interested if you wouldn't mind sending me his business phone # or address.
Even if I end up getting one elsewhere at least I'll know where to go when it breaks or needs parts.

Thank you all for the info. Will try Upper Case as well.

As for the reason, I work on a computer all day, do research on a computer, watch tv and play games on my computer.

As another poster pointed back, a typewriter brings back memories. Like sitting in the back of a library to write a paper. I was tossing around the idea of writing a short story and the click, return sound and tactile feedback just gave me a good feeling.

Something you can't mimic on a keyboard and laser printer.

Staples still sells them, but Yikes. I have one at work that unfortunatly, im about to have to dust off and actually use it. Unless i can figure out a way to print on itty-bitty little cards from my printer. 8-(

Let us know when you actually find one and are going to use it. We could get the local schools to take a tour and see how us old timers used to do things before computers. lol
