Opal Covey Can Cure What Ails Toledo

To each his own, but to be fair...what experience does Opal have? I think religious guidance is just what our city needs to stay positive, but besides that she doesn't seem to offer much else. What's her plan to solve the budget deficit? Or crack down on crime? Or encourage business growth and retain jobs?

She wants to build an amusement park.

Huh?

If she gets elected mayor of Toledo, will she still drive around in the Opal-mobile ?

I hope so! Or she'll convert Carty's old city-owned car into a new Opal-mobile.

I can't help but feel that Opal is the most qualified person to lead Toledo. We have tried all the so-called big names of Toledo for too long and it is time to give an outsider to the system a chance.

Since you are so passionate about Opal becoming mayor, please take the time to outline her position on the major issues as well as her ideas for improving the city. Listing any experience that she may have with budgeting and management would also help people make their decision.

This would be much more appreciated than the repetitive "Opal is a follower of God" reason that you keep giving. I look forward to reading an informative post from you.

We asked them the same thing - if you're going to promote your candidate please give us reasons to vote for him.

In his march 13,2009 post Harley told us why he wants Opal to be elected.

Harley wrote:

"Opal is the only one who can guide Toledo out of the wilderness we are in. If she will take sound advice, which I and some others I know can offer to her, she will be our next Mayor."

He never says she has sound judgment, or even any good ideas, but that he and some people he knows can give her some sound advice. So Harley obviously wants to be the power behind the throne, and of course the best way to do that is to push and support someone without a clue.

He also said in the thread from 3/13/2009, that Opal would have a great website up in a week or two (put together by harley (at least that was my impression)) but of course its still not up that I can find.

Opal got 110 votes in the last primary. That was .26% of the vote. If she wins it will show that God was really on her side this time.

I am NOT Opal nor am I related to Opal. God is on Opal's side and she will win this time.

According to a poll on SwampBubbles, http://swampbubbles.com/20090424/poll/if-mayoral-election-was-today-who-would-you-vote, Opal garnered 9% of the vote (beating out Ben Konop), "I don't know", and "None of the above". She will probably do better than she did in the 2005 Primary, but politics is about the interplay of people and coalitions. It is rather like making sausage. Carty may lose, but I think he will beat Opal (in overall numbers) in the primary (if he runs). God will hold his nose, and let us fallible humans vote our own self-interests.

I have to agree with the suggestion extended to you by MaumeeMom. It would certainly give your endorsement much more credibility and validity. I'd even go a step farther and suggest that if you fail to do so, you are by default admitting her lack of credentials, given that you've establsihed you have the time and you have the drive.

I like to think that God has better things to do than endorse a mayorial candidate for Toledo mayor. But hey, to each his own.
Besides, if God was really on her side, I'd hope he would have shown her how to do her eyebrows and makeup by now.

With your e-mail address right there also, any of her 150 - 200 supporters, could contact you for advice and recommendations, about how to support her campaign and get the vote out.

When Opal wins the mayoral race, I'm sure she would offer you the job as Mayoral Spokesperson. --Decent paying job too.

I have asked this question from all Mayorial candidates but since I have no way of contacting you, I will ask you the question here in a public forum.

I live in the Southend near Highland Park. The neighborhood has been resistant to Gang influence for many years but recently I see ever increasing activity in the way of Graffiti and groups of youth walking the streets past curfew. They litter the street and yards with trash, drive slowly down the street blasting their 2000 watt stereos, walk the street in a throng stretching the entire width of the road and will not move when you attempt to drive past them even challenging you to hit them and profess their "rule" of the streets by calling you names and flashing gang signs or obscene gestures as you pass by.
This has become more of an issue since the opening of the New Bowsher High School at Arlington and S. Detroit. I have written to our Councilman Mike Craig but he seems only interested in his constituents from the East Side and could care less about his little slice of District 3 in South Toledo (unless of course he is canvasing for votes).

For the 1st time in the 15 years I have lived here I heard a local TV station refer to our neighborhood as the "Innercity where crime is commonplace"(i.e. Ghetto). My street is well established with long time residents who care about their property values, appearance and social activities. Some residents are elderly and will not be able to escape the "hood" should it come to that.

In the face of the current economic and city budget crises, what is your action plan for dealing with this type of behavior and what can you do to prevent my neighborhood from falling into the grapple of Ghettoism?

I just spoke with Opal several minutes ago and I am going to her house to talk with her shortly. When I get there I will bring up all the points that have been made here on Toledo Talk. Thank you oldsendbrdy for the poll results as I am sure Opal will be encouraged by the news if she has not already heard.

KrazyKat, I've noticed the same thing in adjacent neighborhoods -- in the residential blocks between South and Arlington. And the problem is not just your stereotypical, Black, teenage gang banger, either, although I do see those guys. It's also white kids probably as young as 10 years old-ish.

One of these kids, sooner or later, is going to get hit by a car. I almost hit one myself not long ago -- they like to hang out on the corner of Arlington in the middle of street. You turn off Arlington onto one of the residential streets and they are standing right there, giving you only seconds to react. I rolled down my window and gave them a piece of my mind when I almost hit one of them. "One of you is going to get hit by a car. You can't stand here. I don't want to kill anyone!"

Just Monday, I saw a similar situation play out with a woman in a mini-van, backing out of her driveway on one of these side streets. There was quite a verbal altercation! She asked them to move and got lots of foul language thown at her. It's deplorable. I don't even know where these kids come from, they certainly don't live on this particular block because I know most of the neighbors.

I'd call the police to come clear the street, but the cops don't give a crap about that area, it seems. Last time my boyfriend reported a theft from his property, they didn't even come to the scene. The time before that, he called about a break-in to his garage and a bunch of property that was stolen, and it took them until the next day to show up!

So I like everyone else was upset when I first heard about the pending police layoffs. Then I realized: You don't miss what you've never had.

This is off-topic, sorry. But this is a rant that's been bubbling in my head for a while now! And anyway, I don't have a single word to say about Opal Covey For Mayor. You've all said it quite nicely already.

Opal insisted the last time she ran for mayor that it was ordained by God that she would win the election. So one of two things must be true.
1) God was wrong
or
2) Opal was wrong

But I'll bet odds that the same one will be wrong this time.

As for the police, thats kind of funny. My neighbor almost got his house broken into, he was home so it scared the perp off, but he actually called the non emergency number aplogized for bothering them, talked some trash about Farty, and would you beleive 2 patrolmen came within a half hour! (he didnt even ask for someone to come out, just wanted to report it)So remember it, you may be able to use the same tactic in an emergency 8-)

I met Mike Craig last year with Pastor David Kaiser of Western Avenue Baptist Church. When I mentioned to Mike Craig about what a waste of time and money it was to have built a new Westfield School and the fact there is a carryout selling alcohol directly across the street from it he became visibly angry. I asked him why alcohol is being sold that close to a school and he turned his back on me and mumbled something about a "grandfather clause". When I went further and let him know that there has been a school there far longer than that carryout has been licensed and therefore his talk about a grandfather clause held no water he clammed up and wouldn't talk about it any further. I know enough about alcohol laws to know there is not supposed to be an alcohol license directly across the street from aschool. The corner in question, Linden and Western, has been a magnet for prostitution and other far more serious crime for a long time. Craig would not address this issue. Pastor Kaiser laughed when he saw I got Mike Craig's goat. Mike Craig is no good and should be voted out by the citizens of the East Side and South End.

I know Opal Covey and have for a long time. Opal's heart is in the right place and so is her mind. That is one thing I know can never be said about Carty. The man is nuts. Opal would be ready from day one to assume the office of mayor and would do it with decency and respect for others. Another thing that could never be said about Carty. She would never try to line her pockets while in office. Remember Carty's crooked Commodore Island condo deal that he lined his pockets with? Carty is, was and will always be a loud-mouthed arrogant crook. Opal has more brains in her little finger than all the rest of the bunch running for mayor combined.

Any relevant Education post High School?
Any management/adminisistrative/Budgeting experience?
Basic Credentials?

Just some of the basic credentials any voter would want to know about a possible candidate.

I have to tell you Harley, by not doing so and by continuing your status quo remarks about Opal you are doing her more harm than good. Political Science 101. Is that what you want Harley? To do more harm to Opal than good? To lessen her chances rather than improve them?

I was in Opal's fine establishment/junk shop on the east side many moons ago. The place stunk and was overrun with cats, kittens and dogs. Wasn't she fined and found guilty of animal cruelty by the city and weren't her animals taken away because she could not care for them because she was a hoarder? I agree that Carty is a freakin nut but Opal? Are you serious?

If memory serves me, she had like 400 animals taken and, in fact, I believe both the Wood County and Lucas County Humane Society's were unable to take any more cats for quite a while because of her. They, were pleading for donations at the time to cover vet and food expenses. Yeah, that is exactly who should be mayor...

Opal Covey (?) – Opal’s back story is a mix of rumor and urban legends. I don’t think anyone knows who she really is other than she has a lot of cats and she has been running for mayor for a while now. I am all for God and I love my spirituality....but i dare not cross the line of church and state....they are separate for a reason.
