Best vacuum for pet hair...

Hoping not to open another can of worms with a pet related posting, but here goes nothing...

My vacuum bit the dust... or quit biting it as the case may be. I was wondering if anyone has pets/lots of pet hair and a vacuum they just couldn't live without. I'm willing to spend a high/er price for a product that will make my life simpler and my house cleaner.

Let the debate... errrr, suggestions begin.

I've owned both a dyson, and a eureka smart vac boss. The dyson did well up until recently, so we went and bought the eureka.

There are two things I don't like about the eureka though. One is that it is a bag type vaccum (only one they had at the time), and the second is that the hose attachment has almost no suction to it. When using the regular vaccum selection though that thing will suck up anything.

This one reportedly will suck up a 16 lb. bowling ball...or David Oreck's head:

We have the Bissell 5770 Healthy Home Bagless Upright Vacuum, and it kicks some serious arse in handling the fur and dander from the many dogs in our house.

The only downside for some folks is the bagless function, which means that you have to take the cannister outside and empty it into the trash, or dust goes everywhere. Still, the 12-amp motor is quite powerful for household cleaning, and the see-through cannister allows you to be able to gauge when to empty it.

I have the Bissell Pet Hair vacuum which is the same as the Healthy home but just a year older. It was great when we got it but it is just not as good as when we bought it 3 years ago. It also now leaves streaks in the carpet where the brush has worn. We have 2 dogs and 3 cats and I will say it did its job while have had it. I did some more research on this recently and have found that the Kenmore Progressive is just as good as the dyson and way cheaper.

I have no dog, but when we bought our new vac we went to the fix-it shop and talked to the guy there. He told us that bag vacs are cleaner on the whole. He sold both, but leaned heavily toward bags - he was adamant that they were cleaner. We ended up buying a Eureka Smart Vac and it rocks.

Thanks all who replied.

After doing some quick online research and after getting a few personal accounts from some coworkers, I went to Target and purchased a Dyson DC25 Animal. Holy carpet filled with dog hair batman! This vacuum is amazing! Definately pricey, but it is $110 off at Target right now. Based on the first run in the house, I highly recommend this unit!

Dyson is a good one. We had ours for over 8 years until it finally crapped out on us. My has a dyson that she just bought. We're switching her vacs tomorrow because she doesn't like it.

Deho - We have the Dirt Devil Wind Tunnel and 2 dogs and a cat. It works wonderfully (4 years now) for picking up pet hair. My suggestion to you is start using Arm & Hammer carpet powder with pet hair release. It's not just a marketing ploy - it works. I won't be without it in this house.

Also - our Dirt Devil still sells for a modest $225.00 or so. Some places less on sale. Expensive does not equate to good.
