Mosquitoes!!!

I live in the Old West End, and as of a couple days ago my house and yard are SWARMING with mosquitoes. I have them holding on to all my screened in windows, and if you go outside for anything you are covered in an instant.

Typically we don't see them so early in the year, and never in such large numbers. Just curious if anyone else is getting attacked in and around toledo?

Yes, in the Franklin Park area the mosquitoes have been more numerous and hungry than I would expect to see this time of year. This is especially puzzling given the dry weather of the past two weeks.

Are you sure they're mosquitoes? Mosquitoes are out now, but other insects hatch too. We've had a recent insect hatch in our neighborhood. These half-inch long insects are hanging onto screens, parked cars, and they're swarming around our front porch lights, but I don't think they're mosquitoes. I think they're some kind of midge, which can resemble a mosquito.

They might be mayflies . . . http://www.mayflynews.net/ . . . they look like mosquitoes only bigger.

I thought I was getting attacked here in Sylvania because my neighbor has not done a thing with his above ground pool in 2 years and there is water standing in the cover.. I have heard many people complaining. I was attacked in the garden, probably bitten 7 times....

this year they are vampire mosquitos. In the west end and east toledo, they are horrible. Anyone know when they start spraying, or was that a victim of budget cuts?

Ps-if you have standing water near you, dump some bleach in it to kill the bugs. It doesn't take that much. A gallon will take care of most pools.

We've got them here in Holland too. A neighbor has a "water feature" which he ignores all year and it becomes a stagnent mosquito breeder. When no one's home I pitch a mosquito dunk over the fence and into the water. Lasts about a month, then I pitch in another one. Goes on all summer. It's either that or I vandal the darn thing a poke a hole in it so it won't hold water.

i'm sure they are mosquitoes.. only because I am COVERED in bites. id love for it to be something else.. but its not.

who do we need to alert to this early season outbreak? if they wait until end of summer to spray like they did last year, our collective outdoor enjoyment will be greatly destroyed.

I buy "Seven" and lay it in my yard. It's good for all kinds of bugs...fleas/ticks/misquito larva, and all that other good stuff that comes with summer. It doesn't get rid of the one's that fly in your yard, but it works at stopping them from breeding in your grass. : )

So far, neither my kids nor I have been bit by a mosquito yet. We've been in our yard most of the weekend (Sylvania Twp), and also spent a whole afternoon at Secor Metropark. (I was surprised that there were no mosquitoes there!)

My husband got attacked on the golf course this weekend. Can't remember which course though, but his ankles/lower legs are covered in bites.

I have tons of them...they are coming up from under my deck as they do every spring. I get cutter yard spray ( hook to your garden hose variety ) and soak down the under the deck and around the back yard...just keep the kids and pets off it for a day.

We bought an attachment that converts our leaf blower in to a mosquito fogger; it works great. We spray every couple of days during peak season using a chrysanthemum-based repellent.

Yeah noticed that as well. I live in Perrysburg and it's been pretty bad down here as well the past two days. Notice the little blood suckers when taking my dog for his walks.

kmcgilvery thanks for the link. i'm not really excited about spraying poison in my yard transcom.. but it looks like that might be my only option.

well, if you think about it... that's what the city is doing--spraying poison in everyone's yards.

they aren't listening, transcom, but thanks for the clarity. They aren't mayflies, either, those are huge compared to these guys. we must be nice and dry over here on the East Side coz I was outside in the garden for an hour after dinner tonight and they were all around me but I got no bites. we got midges, yay!, tho I've never seen them swarm like this. must be a good year.

also, you people with the skeeter breeders in your neighborhood, call TASD and see if they can do anything about making them clean it up. what good does it do for us to pay to have them spray when one neglected pool can fill the whole neighborhood. do something!!

My yard is swarming with them too. I live in Sylvania Township. These mosquitos are especially large! Makes them easier to kill once they are in my house. In the eight years that I have lived here, these must be the worst!
