Sonic is Here II

Sonic 2 is taking shape on Navarre Ave. Its across the street from McDonald's.
In Rossford the fanfare has died down some, but still enough people are keeping the expensive burger joint going. Expect items to be missing from your order. But no other restaurant around has better roller skaters than the Sonic "order fillers".

Now who dare say that east siders have to settle for a trip over the river for a good restaurant?
:)

I'll start..."Now who dare say that east siders have to settle for a trip over the river for a good restaurant?"... me thinks that says it all about eastsiders' epicurean senses.

There was never a need to cross the river for a good resturaunt, perrysburg and rossford have a few decent places. 8-)

Always wanted to try em - are they any good? They sure advertize a lot in this area

Surprisingly tasty, surprisingly expensive. A combo is +$5. Swapping out tater tots instead of fries is a thing of beauty, however.

Is there any fast food place that it doesn't cost $5 for a combo?

posted by slowsol on Jun 01, 2009 at 03:53:47 pm     #

That’s true, and Sonics stuff seems a bit higher quality. Almost like diner food, if that makes sense. It’s good, but I am not going to be going out of my way to go there anytime soon. Not when I have the luxurious line up of McD’s, BK, Wendys, Taco Bell and Arbys all within shouting distance. I usually end up at Taco bell though. Now Arbys is expensive for fast food if you ask me.

I have to say it's yummy! The burgers seem to taste a heck of a lot better around 11pm; when hanging with other adult friends and talking. (Could be the order was minus the kids) I am a fan the Route 44 Cherry slushy.
If you haven't been there, go try something different.

I like Tom's on front sreeet. Don't get over there too often, but I love that greasy burger and onion rings. Lemonade's not bad either. I'll try Sonic next time I get over that way.

Has anyone gone crazy on the drink flavor combos yet? Definitely something to try out if you haven't. Granted I've become boring and just settle for a Vanilla Cherry Sprite. Though the real fruit strawberry slush is nice too.

But yet the car hops at Sonic make it a nice change and a bit more personal than other fast food places. The food is definitely better, in my opinion, then comparable BK or McD's. Prices don't seem too bad, but can be a bit higher depending on what you get. Maybe it is to pay for their HQ in Downtown OKC? lol http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b61/edcrunk/misc%202/sonic04lg.jpg?t=1243894034

Either way, if you like their drinks the happy hour 1/2 off special is always nice - especially on a hot day.

My Brother and I tried Sonic last year, found them expensive, nothing that special, other than a place that still has curb service. We looked at it that you were paying a bit more for the comfort of staying in your car. And yes-Arby's IS an expensive place now, and they're hurting, which is why they always have some sort of special going. Last month, every wednesday they were giving away something with a purchase (ex: buy a drink, get a free sandwich, or buy any sandwich and get a free shake). And they were STILL pretty much empty when I went by.

Does Sonic still sell chili cheese tater tots and foot-long chili cheese dogs?

I dont think $5 for a combo is any different than anywhere else. Their advertizing has worked - I'll give them a shot.

BUT, like Ryan said, Im not gonna cross town to get to them. I'll have to wait till Im on that side of town AND it's meal time - but eventually, Im sure that'll happen.

Ya gotta try the shakes. Boy howdy, I'll drive to Pburg for one of them.

I didn't know they were opening on Navarre. That's good news!

posted by Anniecski on Jun 02, 2009 at 11:13:24 am     #

They'll open units on the populated side of the river - just takes time finding sites when most of the best ones are already taken.

I wouldn't call Sonic expensive. They raised prices a couple times in the last 5 years and it's a little more than cheapo McD's, but you get what you pay for. They have unique fare on the menu & I take peace of mind in knowing somebody actually cooks my burgers on a grill & not some mass-oven deal or conveyor belt. For ultimate spendthrifts, try ordering 4-5 items off their dollar menu.

I just checked out their menu online and now i'm really needing a coca-cola float!!!

Tweet a few minutes ago by BarrettFTN :

Sonic's open in Oregon. Based on by the Rossford opening, be ready for some crazy lines... though, it is second in the area, so maybe not?

posted by jr on Jul 02, 2009 at 10:37:39 am     #

The lines WERE crazy! They had Oregon cops directing traffic and the curb lane had signs saying SONIC traffic only, lol! My grandson wanted it, so we drove to Pburg about 6:30 and they were packed, too! Have to say of the 5 times I've had it, 2 in OKC and now 3 here, tonights was the best. The manager came out with trays of samples of their new flavor Chiller, Cherry Limeade, awesome flavor, and man, it chilled for sure. The girls were cute and the food was hot and out in less than 5 minutes. We got 3 combos for $18, yeah, kinda expensive, but it was tasty and fun, so worth it.

I guess they're adding a Sonic to the Westgate area, on Secor north of Central. Construction is underway, though I haven't seen a sign for it. Someone already wrote to the Blade to complain about it! :-)

I love Sonic, the price difference is worth it. Their variety of 'fast food' teas is simply to die for!

From the June 2, 2010 Toledo Blade "Letters to the Editor" that viola mentioned:

As a longtime Old Orchard resident, I have watched the beauty of the original Westgate Village become a dump. There is more than enough space on Secor Road between West Central Avenue and Monroe Street to allow for many businesses, once the buildings are removed. Now I hear a company wants to squeeze a Sonic drive-in between Elder Beerman and PNC Bank in this congested area. What morons are doing this haphazard planning?

posted by jr on Jun 02, 2010 at 08:38:14 pm     #

I nominate the Old Orchard resident to go into the demolition business and see how much it costs to start removing buildings! I used to shop at the "old" Westgate maybe once a month from 2001 to 2007. Now I spend money there 3 or 4 times a week: gas and etc. at Costco, anything from Fresh Market, lots of Chipotle. IMHO, the update is a huge improvement for the neighborhood and an economic success story.

I hope that doesn't hurt 5 Guys business. I only had it once and thought it was fantastic. Way too much food, but that was my fault for not knowing to order the smalls. I ate the fries for two days!

Let Opal turn the old cinemas building into her amusement park.

Love Sonic for their $1 jr hamburger and jr bacon (price on this one varries $1-$1.49 sometimes) tastes like old Koral Hamburger... I miss the one in downtown perrysburg and it's not convenient to go to waterville! Kids love all the drinks powerade slush and cherry limeade are our favorites!

Finally a Sonic on the west side of the river! Still waiting for them to colonize the rest of the metro. Finding good sites in this built-up city is probably challenging.

posted by mixman on Jun 03, 2010 at 10:41:43 am     #

Ryan, I'm ok with it putting five guys out of business... Their burgers start at 700 calories and I need and excuse to stop going! :)

I gotta say though... If traffic didn't already suck on secor, it's about to really really suck once thy open

posted by upso on Jun 03, 2010 at 11:59:59 am     #

That part of Secor is becoming the unofficial hot spot for new-to-the-area quick service/fast-food franchises. Popeye's, Del Taco, Five Guys, now Sonic. Maybe we'll get some other new stuff once that old theater complex comes down.

posted by mixman on Jun 03, 2010 at 01:38:39 pm     #

I honestly think the old cinemas would be a good place for a Dave and Buster's. They could either take down the building and put up a new structure or remodel the current facility. With a little infrastructure improvements, I think it could work.

posted by avinsurer on Jun 03, 2010 at 01:41:21 pm     #

Honestly, I think the perfect place for a Dave and Busters is somewhere in the plans of the new Southwyck. The demographics fit for the company and would be a hotspot for the south Toledo region. Dave and Busters along with an IKEA could really do wonders for the South Toledo Region!

posted by ttownb on Jun 03, 2010 at 01:55:08 pm     #

Ryan, lol!!! you and me both!! I'm all the way out in Lake Township and I have no problem driving to Westgate for food. I need to re-up my Costco membership so I can go more often! I don't think 5 Guys will have any trouble with Sonic, the bloom is off that rose over here. Everybody's back at McD's, lol.

posted by nana on Jun 03, 2010 at 06:00:36 pm     #

Dave and Buster's would be a best fit at the old cinemas in Spring Meadows. Right off the highway, decent infrastructure, lower taxes, and plenty of parking. At the Westgate theaters would be a nightmare traffic wise, and Southwyck is where businesses go to die.

posted by muddyriverduck on Jun 03, 2010 at 06:35:10 pm     #

Dave & Busters seem to only open (at least the ones i've seen) right off of highways. Unfortunately for the Southwyck area, there is no stop in site. Spring Meadows would be perfect though!

I love Sonics but don't frequent it that often. Agree their tots rock, coney dogs, and especially their onion rings.

Besides the normal burger/dog/potato food I like them over other places for the fact you can get breakfast food anytime of day and even have a dollar menu.

Their milkshakes are also amazing. Was glad when they built that on on Navarre since I work close by and can go there for lunch on occasion.
