Local spot makes Chi Trib's 3 Top Midwest Ice Cream Parlors

3 top ice cream parlors in the Midwest - ChicagoTribune.com
June 21, 2009

Taste is, of course, a matter of personal preference. That said, here are three of the author's favorite ice cream parlors in the Midwest.

Whitey's, 1601 Avenue of the Cities, Moline, Ill. -- A popular place ever since the doors opened in 1933, Whitey's serves up the best ice cream in the Quad Cities, where the locals are pretty particular when it comes to satisfying their collective sweet tooth. 309-762-4335, whiteysicecream.com

Calder Dairy & Farm, 9334 Finzel Rd., Carleton, Mich. -- What makes this place special isn't so much the ice cream as the setting, a working dairy farm. Tours are offered daily, and there's even a petting zoo. 734-654-2622, calderdairy.com

Charlie's Homemade Ice Cream, 6600 Sylvania Ave., Sylvania, Ohio -- You could easily drive right past this storefront in a strip mall in suburban Toledo, but what a shame that would be. 419-882-6393

We love Charlie's.

Calder Dairy Farm is semi-local too...just north of Monroe. Gosh, I haven't been there since I was a kid - now it makes me want to take my kids there!

I used to work at Charlie's - he's an awesome guy and works very hard at what he does! Congrats Charlie!

Good PR will definitely give it a try. I mean who doesn't like ice cream.

Charlie's is great, but Handel's is very hard to beat:

Handel's Ice Cream‎
5908 Sylvan Green Rd
Sylvania, OH

I kind of think that both places would have to be tried several times to decide just which one is better.
