Fireworks '09

Where do you all recommend going this year for Fireworks? I have family from out of state coming in and would like to take them to a good show. First year I was up here I saw them at Luna Pier, MI. Have also seen them in Elmor and Maumee Bay.

Recommendations are appreciated.

Summerfest fireworks stunk this year, so you didn't miss anything. It usually is a good show but this years wasn't.

Anybody go to the Springfield Twsp. Freedom Festival Saturday? Why in the heck did they hold it a week early?

Swanton USED to have a great one in their football stadium, but don't know if it's still done.

If you feel like battling the crowds, Downtown Toledo always puts on a great show! Sylvania also used to put on a good show.

Holland, I don't know why Springfield Township scheduled their show so early this year. Perhaps it's because they didn't want to compete with the other communities' fireworks shows this weekend. The weather certainly cooperated for Springfield, in any case.

Jul 1, 2009 WTOL story titled 'Blue flu' rumors cause police to make July 4 back-up plan :

The rumor is massive number of officers will call in sick this Fourth of July. On Saturday night, Promenade Park place will be packed. A crowd of about 150,000 is expected. The MLK bridge will be closed and about 100 Toledo police officers will be controlling it all.

Recent layoffs, contract negotiations and reassignments have boosted frustrations within the Toledo Police Department. All of that has rumored a blast of officers calling in sick this Fourth of July. 80 officers will work overtime this Red, White and Kaboom including traffic cops, bike cops, directed patrols, mounted patrol, sky patrol and the undercover.

Their riskiest time of night is just after midnight. That's when the crowd of 150,000 are trying to go home and when we saw shooting after shooting in 2007. Of the extra 80 officers, Kenney says eight sick calls might be legitimate. If that number reaches 24, however, they've already asked the Lucas County Sheriff to help.
