Where're the red hats?

At lunch last sunday, someone in the group brought up the fact that you dont see any of the red hat gang anymore.

remember a couple years back when you couldnt go to a restaurant or a movie theatre without seeing a gang of old women together cuttin' loose in their red hats...

What happened to em? They WERE all old, you dont think they all just... You know...

There ARE fewer Red Hat gangs around ... my uncle's huge retirement community, which used to have 3 separate RH societies, is down to only one (and not very active). I believe there was a certain type of lady who feels that she gave many years to the raising of children and the micromanaging of husbands, and the RH club was a way to celebrate HER time to do whatever the h*ll she wanted for a change ... slightly younger generations of women, who might look geriatric, were not quite as selfless and sacrificial as society changed. They have no need to put on the red hat and go about in gangs to get some enjoyment out of life. In short, my grandmother would have been a RH; my mother, maybe; me & my sister: no way, no need!

The Red Hat idea began with the poem by Jenny Joseph, titled - (years ago).

"Warning"

"When I am an old woman I will wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves.
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired.
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells.
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens,
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go.
or only bread and pickle for a week.
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good ezample for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Women jumped on the Red Hat bandwagon - kind of a rebellion of sorts. But I tnink the stores overdid it with marketing anything remotely 'Red Hat". There was a time when the stores were loaded with these things, or clothing with designs of red hats, jewelry, etc. It became cliche & overdone - but I think there are still followers, and I bet it's good for their souls.
