Social Media Breakfast Toledo Event

Sep 11 SMB-Toledo Event

From posting at http://smbtoledo.ning.com

September's SMB Toledo will feature Chris Myers, owner and editor of the Swamp Bubbles blog, a user-centered site dedicated to breaking news and political discussion in Toledo and Northwest Ohio.

Chris, and his attorneys, Fan Zhang and C. William Bair, have an interesting story to share. Chris will talk about his experiences on the receiving side of multiple legal demands his online activities and site has attracted as well as his experiences being caught up in a libel suit.

Chris was successful in getting the suit dropped and will share his thoughts on how to stay out of legal trouble with your blogging and social media activities.

In today's litigious society, your online comments or blog post about a bad service, faulty product, or a public figure could have you slapped with a lawsuit. You might be innocent, but by the time you pay an attorney for your defense you still lose.

Come and learn from Chris’s experience and minimize your legal exposure from your social media activities.

Apr 2009 SMB-Toledo Recap

April 23, 2009 Mike's Points blog posting about the April Toledo SMB event.

There were definitely plenty of people interested in and eager to learn about, dip their toes into and expand on their own experience in social media marketing at SMB-Toledo #1. There was great excitement in the air from the crowd of 79 people — plus many others who viewed it via Ustream.tv, as well as seeing the #smbtol Twitter stream.

If you’re one of those tire-kickers, you need to know that social media is no fad. And, to fellow area marketing communication professionals, business owners and business execs: if you bury your head and ignore social media marketing — you will become like the dinosaurs.

I’m a firm believer that not every company and organization should be active in social media outreach. BUT, every company and organization should be monitoring social media for their name, products and services, competitors and trends pertinent to them. Just like having a clipping service if you are active in media relations, you need to be monitoring social media — no matter what.

Blog posting at ice cream social - (Kevin Cesarz)

Dave Rigotti is the featured speaker at our Social Media Breakfast Toledo event this Friday at the Toledo Elks Club. Dave is an award-winning online marketer, whose works have been mentioned in such publications as The L.A. Times, Techcrunch, Cleveland Plain Dealer and others. Dave, who was part of the panel for April’s inaugural SMB Toledo, is also the owner of an internet marketing company called Freezing Hot.

Excerpts from the event description :

Dave Rigotti will be speaking on the "Do's and Dont's of Business Blogging". Dave will provide an in-the-trenches overview on how to get started blogging and how to maximize your blog's effectiveness on your business or organization. Along with presenting case studies on how organizations have successfully incorporated blogs into their marketing mix, Dave will also answer common questions such as: Should I blog? How do I get started? What should I write about? How do I integrate a blog into my current marketing efforts? How do I maximize effectiveness? How do I measure effectiveness? What are some resources for getting started?

More about Rigotti

Dave recently graduated from The University of Toledo (BBA with Honors, magna cum laude, 2009) after majoring in marketing and entrepreneurship, family and small business. Dave is currently working on publishing his University of Toledo undergraduate thesis titled

"The Social Media Use of Obama and McCain: The correlation between the use of social media Web sites among different age groups and the influence of such sites on the 2008 presidential election."

In July, he'll be joining Microsoft as a Product Manager for the LiveSearch [now called Bing].

Can I assume most of the stuff discussed is relative common sense for those who've already embraced social media as a marketing tool?

Too damn early to network

Need user miked918 at http://www.mikespoints.com to login.

Back in January, a spam-like post asked: "Why is that 60% of the businesses in Toledo don't have a website?"

Is that number true? I'm guessing that for some businesses, a Web presence makes no sense. But it seems a business should at least maintain a Wordpress or Typepad blog with semi-regular updates. That way when someone does a Web search on the business, the business owner's blog site appears in the search results and not just a listing on some directory site.

Maybe some business owners would like to know more about how to promote their businesses with other Web properties like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, etc. It might not make sense for a paint store owner, but maybe it does for a small, neighborhood grocery store like Zavotski Custom Meats & Deli. Or vice versa.

It's not like a business needs to invest a ton of money and time in using these Web sites, but maybe business owners don't know this.

Not local, but here are a couple tiny businesses that have used social media to promote their work:

I'm on the SMB-Toledo organizing committee and, as JR pointed, out, Social Media Breakfast-Toledo definitely is part of the SMB umbrella started by Bryan Person in late 2007.

Thanks to JR for the great recap. Cost for Friday's event is $15, if you register online by 5 p.m. TODAY. Otherwise, it's $20 at the door.

In response to UPSO's question, as you likely know, terms like experience and expert are relative terms. No, you may not learn a lot from Friday's event.

I've had my own blog since summer 2005, and started my first blogger outreach effort in around November/December that year. So, I don't expect to learn a lot from Dave Rigotti's talk.

However, Dave has some great experience, knows more on the technical end than I do, and did his intern with Quicken Loans (where he was part of a very successful effort). I figure I can learn something of value from Dave, and I'd be going even if I wasn't on the committee. (And, yes, I'm paying my way as well.)

If you can't make Friday's event -- doors open at 7:30 and Dave's talk starts around 8 a.m. -- that's fine. We'll be doing more.

If you are near at computer and can't make the event, you can watch the it at SMB-Toledo's Ustream.tv channel: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/social-media-breakfast-toledo. The first two events are archived there (but we've had technical difficulties at the first two, so they're good, but not perfect -- yet).

We've been focusing on the events being the first Friday of every month. For July, we'll push it back a week due to the July 4 holiday, but will try to be consistent otherwise.

If you haven't already, please check out the community we've set up at http://smbtoledo.ning.com/.

For other social media-like groups in the area, Mark Pannell started a TOLeeps group -- focusing on Toledo area people on Twitter. The social network community is here http://toleeps.ning.com/ while the blog is http://toleeps.wordpress.com/ (disclosure: I'm the subject of the first spotlight).

Please feel free to contact me with any questions -- or anyone else connected to organizing Social Media Breakfast-Toledo.

I just noticed this at the top. Still no thought into having the threads listed by last active posting versus original post date? I just think it would be great to have threads that are most lively "bubble up" to the top and the rest fall away naturally.

jr, have you ever looked into Vanilla?

I'm working on it. Last month, I thought more about this. On the sidebar of the Toledo Talk home page under "sort entries by" is option "bb" which is this:

http://toledotalk.com/bb

I created this view about a month ago, and I've been using it most of the time.

A few weeks ago, I created a post that was a test screenshot of what might be the default home page of Toledo Talk. More of a forum-based view, but the other sort options or views would still be available in the sidebar.

Anyway, I've been making the changes on my laptop recently, and I'll upload them soon, and then use and test them myself for a while.

BTW, you didn't see this particular SMB Toledo post at the top of the default home page. What you saw was an actual new posting that contained only the following:

@37161

That's a command to redirect the user to page id 37161, which is this old, original thread that we're currently commenting in again. Look at the top of this post and you should see text that says:

(Redirected here from : Social Media Breakfast Toledo event - July 10)

So "Social Media Breakfast Toledo Event" was the original post made on June 1, and the newly-created post titled "Social Media Breakfast Toledo event - July 10" redirects to the other.

Obviously, in the message board/bulletinboard/forum view, I would only have to edit this original post, and it would appear at the top, and I wouldn't need to create a new post with that redirect command. But I use the redirect command for other purposes like shortcuts. For example, the shortcut P3 redirects to the original post titled People Planning Perrysburg.

Thanks for your interest in the old-school, forum view. Others have brought this up in the past, so I'm finally conceding. And I still get to keep all the wiki features that I need.

yeah, i prefer the old school forum view too.
my good friend actually is responsible for vanilla, so i've spent years on vanilla boards.
it's hard keeping up with conversations when they sink even when active

I really need to be at this event but will be out of town all day on business.
Does anyone tape or archive these meetings ?

AnonCoward: Sure. Wear a mask. It's close enough to Halloween!

ForceW/in: Yes, we do typically livestream the events, and will archive. Sometimes, the WiFi at the Elks Lodge is spotty so we can't always get a good archive. The SMB-Toledo Livestream channel is http://www.livestream.com/socialmediabreakfasttoledo.

For those interested in attending, the pre-registration is http://smbtoledo5.eventbrite.com/
