NASA's restored videos.

To honor the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, NASA has just released these brand new restored videos of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin's historic first steps on the moon. The space agency is working with Lowry Digital in Burbank to restore tapes from the July 20, 1969 moonwalk — the project in its entirety will be completed in the fall, but they're offering a sneak peek at some of the iconic moments, like Neil Armstrong (above) and Buzz Aldrin (below) taking their first steps on the moon, starting right now. These clips show side-by-side comparisons of the footage stored in the NASA archives vs. the never-seen-before newly restored footage.

Pretty amazing stuff, wish I could have been alive to witness it.

I was alive and old enough to remember it. I still think it was another Hollywood fake. i will never believe man has been on the moon. If it can't be done now then how in the world could it have been done forty years ago?

I just read on Yahoo that the reason NASA is having the film restored is because the knuckleheads erased it!
Whoops.

I have heard that before man can return to the moon we have to develop a radiation shield to protect the crew from solar radiation. If we have to develop one now what did NASA use for a radiation shield 40 years ago? Cardboard boxes maybe?

You heard that where?

I can't recall where I read or heard that but I am looking for it. In the meantime here are two websites to read and think about: http;//www.space.com/businesstechnology/lunarshield_techwed_050112.html http://www.braeunig.us/space/69-19.htm

(borrowed from the internet)

-

What reasons would the US Government have to fake such an event?

-

To answer such a question can only lie in space exploration history. The decade of the sixties was consumed by thoughts of the Cold War between Russia and the USA. The Russian launch of Sputnik terrified the USA due to the fear of nuclear annihilation. There was a real fear that the winners of the Space Race could build a Nuclear Missile Base on the Moon. Did this lead to the speculation about a Fake Moon Landing Hoax - a Conspiracy Theory?

-

-

What evidence do the Fake Moon Landing Conspiracy Theorists have?

-

The evidence and ideas put forward by the Fake Moon Landing Conspiracy Theorists include the following:

No Plans for return trips

Images show that Stars were missing from the black lunar sky

Absence of engine noise in official NASA footage - how was it possible to clearly hear the voices of the Astronauts?

No Blast Crater under the LEM after the powerful engines had been fired

Astronauts Footprints - How was it possible for footprints to be left undisturbed and without dust

American Flag was waving - how is this possible when there is no air on the moon

Pictures of the ascent of the LEM - images appear to show that the LEM was jerked up, as if by a cable, there was no evidence of an exhaust plume

Grainy, Unclear images although technology at the time could have produced much clearer images - Did NASA intentionally make the images hard to see?

Still Photographs - Cameras were fitted to the Astronauts chest - there was no view finder and photographs could only be taken by movement of the body but 1000's of flawless photographs were taken

Crosshairs on Still Photographs - The crosshairs on the photographs could only be on the top of images but pictures of the Astronauts and the Flag clearly show that the crosshairs were partially obscured, beneath the images

Shadows - The only source of light on the moon was the Sun but shadows were cast in multiple directions

Lighting - Images of Astronauts were brightly lighted although their positions would have clearly been in shadow. Some images indicate that the Astronauts appeared to be in spotlight

Backgrounds - the backdrops or the moonscape of some images appear to be identical although NASA stated that the images were taken at different times and locations which were over 2 miles apart

The Van Allen Radiation Belt - Could the Astronauts survive travelling through the deadly radiation belt which is situated 500 miles above the earth and is 1000's of miles thick with only the protection from their space suits and the thin covering of the space ship when it is estimated that 6 feet of lead would be necessary would have been needed. None of the Astronauts have since showed any signs of radiation poisoning

No other manned mission has gone through the Belt

Silencing - It seems unreasonable that information would not have been leaked about any such hoax - theorists therefore believe that key witnesses, including members of the Astronaut Corps, were deliberately silenced. Between 1964 and 1967 10 astronauts died in accidents - 15% of the corps.

Fact stranger than Fiction? Facts and Info

-

In 1978 the movie Capricorn One was released about a fake manned Mission To Mars. The movie was made for a budget of $4 Million and comparisons have been drawn between the movie and the Fake Moon Landing Hoax - the Conspiracy Theory. Area 51 is also considered in these comparisons. The Nevada Desert Terrain, where Area 51 is located has amazing similarities to the moon terrain, including craters. Satellite pictures of Area 51 indicate large hangars which are similar to Movie Sets. The secrecy surrounding area 51 adds fuel to the fire of the Fake Moon Landing Hoax Conspiracy Theorists.

This issue of a fake moon landing was the subject of an entire episode of Mythbusters. Two guys in the movie special effects business pretty much blew some of FrankG's whacko conspiracy theories right out of the water.

Careful when you read this FrankG. Your head might hurt from having to accept some facts.

If the USA had the technology to land on the moon in 1969 why can't it be done now? Why is the earliest so-called return date to the moon around the year 2020? As far as Holland's assertion you are probably one of the people who believed Nixon when he said I am not a crook.

It's probably not a matter of whether we CAN land on the moon again - as much as a matter of WHY spend the money to do so?

40 years ago today Apollo 11 astronauts stepped on the moon. Today astronauts aboard the space station must fix a broken toilet.

Priorities. We were fighting one war then, now we are fighting two.The world and national economy is much different. The environmental problems of the 60's never got the attention they deserved and are now 40 years worse. There is not the national will to expend the resources to go back, we can't even find the money to replace the aging space shuttle fleet, which will be retired in a few years.I remember the excitement as a kid when the whole world was wrapped up in "Space".It was a great time!!!!

Interesting post even as an amateur I think I can explain some of these:

<i>No Plans for return trips</i>

Nasa did go back to the moon a couple times after Apollo 11.

<i>Absence of engine noise in official NASA footage - how was it possible to clearly hear the voices of the Astronauts?</I>

The astronauts were using Mic's noise doesnt travel well in space :)

<i>Astronauts Footprints - How was it possible for footprints to be left undisturbed and without dust</i>

See next point. There's no air or water there, so little to no erosion.

<i>American Flag was waving - how is this possible when there is no air on the moon</i>

momentum? There's low gravity on the moon which is probably why it kind of just stuck out stick. From the footage I've seen it only moved after it was placed but once momentum from physically setting it was over it just kinda sat there.

<i>Grainy, Unclear images although technology at the time could have produced much clearer images - Did NASA intentionally make the images hard to see?</i>

It was the cold war, so I can see this being a possibility.

<i>Shadows - The only source of light on the moon was the Sun but shadows were cast in multiple directions<i>

Ambient light reflecting off of the moons surface onto other surfaces?

I remember what I was doing when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon: I was outside playing when my mom called me in to watch history unfold. I remember how bad the broadcast was, so used to clear reception, lol. Still, an historic moment. It can't be fake because it's not possible for all the astronauts who have landed on the moon to have kept it secret all these years.

posted by bikerdude on Jul 28, 2009 at 01:29:39 am     #

FrankG - one question. If this secret has been keep for 40 years, that would take cooperation on the highese levels during eight administrations. (Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, GHW Bush, Clinton, GW Bush, Obama)

So you're saying that all these administrations worked together to keep this huge secret from the American people??

Any other things you might list that all these different administrations worked with each other on?

Dude, you're talking about thousands of people all keeping a secret? I dont think so.

Three can keep a secret, if two of them are dead.

Im sure if there was a real will of the people we could put someone back on the moon. Im sure it happened and hoax theorists really have to much time on their hands.
