567 vs 419

Finally got my Google Voice invite -- seems they're only offering the 567 area code for those w/Toledo zip codes. You can get 419 area code but only with distant prefixes like Lima or Ashland (which doesn't matter much now that Long Distance is basically free).

I know we were supposed to run out of 419 #s in 2002/3 or something, curious if other providers are giving out 567 #s as yet or if that's just what Google got when buying a large block from L3? Anyone out there with a 567 area code?

Yes. My work-supplied cell phone (carrier: Sprint) was a 567 number, as was my boss's cell phone number on the same account. Not sure how old his account is, but my number was issued in 2007.

However, I recently got my own cell phone under my own name and also went through Sprint, and while signing up they asked me if I preferred a 419 number, which I certainly did. I will be glad not to have to assure people that my cell phone is a local number!

I have a 567 number which I was issued last summer by Verizon (cell phone). I asked for a 419 area code, but was told none were available.

Owens Community College phone numbers are 567 area code.

I have an acquaintance who is a prof there, and at first it confused the hell out of me that her office phone wasn't 419. lol

Back when Google Voice was GrandCentral, I got me a 419. That was maybe a year or 2 ago.

So it could be that they are officially done.

419 is available on MagicJack.
http://www.magicjack.com/9/areacodes.asp

There was a news article about a year ago, which regrettabley I'm unable to find, that reported that there was an ever growing number of 419 prefixed numbers available. The reason given was that more and more people were giving up their land lines and going strictly cellular, thus freeing up the 419 prefixed numbers. I suspect that something else is afoot here that's resulting in the push to 567.

IT'S A CONSPIRACY!

No, actually, it is who "owns" what prefix for which telephone switch wherever in the LATA.

If your choice of telephone companies no longer has any 419-NXX on that switch, they have to switch to 567-NXX. And while they can "port" USED numbers from carrier to carrier, they currently don't do that with UNUSED numbers, so the abandoned AT&T and Verizon landlines don't automatically create a big pool of available cellular numbers. (Cellular being regulated differently and AT&T & VZ's wireless being technically different companies).

I received mine as well. Ended up getting a Put N bay number (419) 285.

Agree though I wish they had some Toledo numbers. Closest I found was Woodville and Maumee, and a few in Oregon.

They're not doing it like gmail at least not yet. So people can't send invites to friends.

If they do I'll give some out to TT.
Btw, it is a great service.
