Who do you think has the best pizza in Toledo?
Who has the BEST Pizza in town????

Capers Pizza Bar on Byrne and Heatherdowns. HANDS DOWN BEST PIZZA!!!!!
Pizza Papalis downtown by far. This is a Detroit legend that has finally migrated down here. This is as close as authentic deep dish as it gets.

I'm still looking for it...and am happy to collect ideas for places to try. I'm really a fan of the New Haven apizza style.
Gino's,Inky's,Aimee's,Home Slice and Pizza Papalis

1.Pizza Pipalis
2.Vitos
3.Poco Piatti
Last: Ginos
watch out for lightening to strike, but I dont care for Pizza Papali's. at least not the deep dish. Too much bread. their thin is pretty good.
Inky's been doing it great for half a century...
vytos, homeslice, myles (bg) and papalis in no particular order
1) Myles (BG)
2) Papalis
3a) Inkys
3b) Vitos
3c) Jo-Jos
Where is Inky's and Jo-Jo's?
Amazed no one has said Marco's. From my understanding it's even a Toledo-born company. I love their sausage and Hawaiian pizza's.
Honestly 95% of the time I order pizza it's Little Caesars.

Probably with Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. Have you no shame?
Uno's is the best pizza, but it isn't available in the Toledo area. Jo-Jo's is too salty for my taste. Aimee's was excellent when she first opened, but then the owner cut back on the quality of the ingredients and the food went from 4 star to one-half star. Inky's, over on Detroit and Sylvania is good.
Probably the best is J & G Pizza Palace on Main St. in downtown Sylvania. But, I haven't tried Pizza Papalis yet, and I'm just getting my chops all set for some excellent pizza. I think this weekend it will be time to give Papalis a shot at the Number One spot.
INKY'S will always be my favorite because of their crust.
Caper's has the best traditional style pizza.
Little Caesars has to be the worst pizza in town. If all you want is uncooked soggy tomato sauce on greasy pie crust with a 1/2 dozen pepperoni slices thrown in for good measure for $5.00; I guess LC is your choice. YUK!
I had Cottage Inn Pizza the other night for the first time. Crust was light and didn't fill you up like bread normally does. Also, the service I received from the store on Heatherdowns was refreshing. A shop owner who actually cares about their customers. Brilliant!
Billy, lightning strike here also. I wasn't impressed with PP's sauce and overall hype, as compared to say, Giordano's in Chicago or LaRosa's "back home" in Cincinnati. My family and I have adopted Gino's as our pizza of choice 'round here.
There are two I really like
Pappouli's Pizza on Main Street in Sylvania.
I also really like Pizza Papalis deep dish.
Gino's is the best. Vito's is terrible. Had a coupon for a free one and it was just awful.
I would love to go back to Inky's-I used to love their crust. I like Gino's taco pizza and thought Vito's taco pizza was fairly decent although when I got my free pizza, I noticed that all four of the sour cream packets they had given me had expired the week before. Not impressed with Bambino's or Pizza Hut. Haven't tried Jo-Jo's or Pizza Papalis. Have heard the pizza at Caspers is good but the service is exceedingly slow.
I remember, way back when, little ceasars pizza was really good, when they used to put them in the paper wrap thing, they definatly went downhill. I prefer Marco's on south ave.
Pizza Hut is and always has been my favorite. Has all the grease of Gino's but with more crust - mmmmmm.

Na, just cheap I guess. :) For me it's simple economics. $5 for something I like or $15 for something I like a little bit better. Not saying it's the best but I do really like LC. Question is it worth 3x the cost for maybe 1/4th improvement? For me it isn't.
To each their own though. I would like to try that place downtown everyone seems to like.

Anyone know the place that sells Tony Packo's Pizza's? Think Gino's or Vito's but they were pretty good, and my girl loves the taco pizza from there.

I'll second the J&G's pick. Here's my hierarchy...
1. J&G's / Pappouli's - almost identical recipe
2. Marco's - local, quality, reliable
3. Gino's - little heavy on cheese but really good
4. Major Magic's - surprisingly
5. Jojo's - great overall
2nd tier...
6. Jet's - good pan style
7. Papa John's - good for a big chain
8. Little Caesar's - good for five dollars
I find Vito's to be seriously overrated and Cottage Inn is just gross.
Looking forward to trying Inky's and Papali's.

Anybody been to the Elbow Room on Alexis lately? Their pizza was pretty good back in the day, but I haven't been there in years.
From INeedCoffee: Na, just cheap I guess.
I like your thinking. Want to join a few of us for a beer some night?
I haven't seen the inside of the Elbow Room in years, and I never really did understand the attraction. The pizza was okay if you don't know any better, and the other menu items - pasta with pizza sauce, mainly - were not so okay. As I remember it, my brother ordered pasta with marinara and Italian sausage and got over cooked spaghetti with mystery sauce. There was no sausage in sight. Then the cook waddled out of the kitchen and started arguing that there really was sausage in the sauce. There wasn't.
I ended the fiasco by sending the slop back to the kitchen and donating half my pizza towards keeping the peace.
Calvino's is by far my favorite...I wasn't too impressed with Pizza Papalis either

i know people would not think this but mine is with out a doubt Major Magics in Sylvania. The Buffet during Lunch is awesome. I love the bbq chicken pizza. Its weird because a friend who works in Sylvania told me about it and I thought he was joking but it is very very good. i was shocked to see a bunch of business people in suits in there. it also included a salad bar that is very good also and the whole thing was only $5.00.
I had Vito's cajun shrimp pizza today, and it was wonderful. Probably not technically pizza, as there was not a tomato sauce, but it was incredibly good.
Vito's and Jo Jo's are great. Not in Toledo, but the Village Idiot in Maumee ahs some of the best pizza I've had. Anywhere. Their sausage and roasted garlic are the best toppings too. It may look like a hole in the wall type of bar, but it is amazing.
posted by taliesin52 on Sep 06, 2009 at 12:15:24 am #
Somebody I used to work with also mentioned the pizza at The Village Idiot. I may have to check that out. I don't make it down to Maumee all that often anymore but it's a straight shot down 23.
I like many of the places already listed.
One I also like that hasn't been mentioned yet is Padrone's Pizza. Located on Central Ave in Sylvania, near Meijer. (In the location of the former Schlotzky's Deli.) Local place, and I like to try to give business to local places if I can.
I can't remember where they are located, but they aren't in toledo, they're in a small town-my brother lives in Luckey, and when we go out to visit, he orders from a place called RED'S. Delicious.
I agree with almost all of the choices, however, that crap they call pizza from Capers is a joke, cardboard crust and flat taste.
Bennett's
NE corner shopping strip of Airport Hwy and Holloway Rd.
if I can offer my opinion...
in Toledo, Ginos because there are some really interesting topping combos plus the toppings and cheese go all the way to the edge...
I tried Pizza Papalis... it was very good but I still have a place in my heart for actual Chicago pizza...
but I love Pisanellos in BG... it's old school pizza... the kind that used to come in a thin, white cardboard box, where the grease soaked through the box within seconds... heart-stoppingly good pizza...
Inky's is the best...but I just remembered a place????
When I was in high school...Blackberry Corners? Out route 2 headed towards Cedar Point. We stopped on the way back. Great stuff.
I don't think it is there anymore.

Sorrentos on Starr Avenue in East Toledo. Family run, great crust. Just opening about a month ago.
Balckberry Corners is still there. Pizza quite average, though.
I also like the Village Idiot in Maumee for pizza. The first time I had one there I thought it was really good and then one night I picked one up that was cooked too long and it was horrible.I guess I should have looked at the pizza before I left with it.I again tried them once more and we had a very good pizza the last time.If you haven't tried their pizza it is worth the trip.

The best pizza in Toledo isnt even in Toledo.....Bowling Green....Myles Pizza....it is outstanding
inky's, gino's, calvinos....in no particular order
Elbo Room on Alexis has delicious pizza. Want beer? Of course they have that too. It's also a bar.
[Closed Sun. & Mon.]
Try Sorrentos and tell them that hockeyfan sent you. If you don't like it, I'll give you your money back. Ok, that part is a lie, but I love it.
My fave is Gino's chicken club: chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo.
If somebody told me I'd ever want mayo on a pizza, I would have laughed in their face -- until I tried it. YUM.
No photos of all this wonderful pizza mentioned?
I haven't tried Pizza Papali's yet, but it looks good

Seems most pizza has burnt cheese and no sauce. No sauce. My preference is for more sauce and less cheese.
Here's my favorite Toledo pizza. Thin, crunchy crust, plenty of tasty sauce, real mozzarella cheese, and green peppers. The green, white, and red colors of Italy.

New Vito's Pizza location opened in the Point today. Free small specialty pizza today. Line looks too long to be worth the wait.
Yea, I would rather pay than wait and hassle for a pie.
I am going to miss Bambinos though, they had some good pizza. I have only had specialty pizzas from Vitos and thought they were gross. Hope the regular ones are tasty. Either way, glad to see something going in there and avoiding another empty building.
Sloopy's located at Lakeside Ohio, between Marble Head and Port Clinton. It makes stomaching all the Ohio State and Cleveland Indian gear worth it!
They have the best pizza!
This is the best pizza hands down!
HOME FRY
French Fries, Ranch Dressing,
Bacon, Cheddar & Mozzarella
Cheese!
Chef Boyardee.... Home made goodness.... heh heh heh

Good God, I'd forgotten all about that brand. LOL
Red's, Gino's, & Vito's are the top three in my book. No particular oder.
So I am new to Toledo - moved here in July. I used this thread to try to decide where to go for some yummy pizza. After reading all of the above suggestions, I decided to try Gino's. I would like to add my two cents after having dined at this establishment. It honestly serves one of the most disgusting pizzas I have ever eaten. The sauce was excessively salty and overly sweet and the cheese was like rubber. I give Gino's a thumbs down.
I never understood the appeal of Ginos either. I will say I tried Vitos this weekend and was pleased. I just got a thin crust with NORMAL topping. No shrimp or chicken or hotdogs, etc. And it was very good. The sauce had a sweetness to it, but it was very subtle.
Marna, sorry you had a bad experience, but if you have the inkling, let us know your experiences as a newcomer - it'd be interesting to see what you think as you try new places that we come to take for granted...
(no go try Inky's...;)
Billy - Thanks. Hopefully I will be able to some day get over this bad pizza experience. : ) I'll also let you in on a newcomers pov along the way!

I would also like to cast a vote for the tasty pizza at Calvino's Restaurant in Cricket West. We had some this weekend, and once again, we got their eggplant pizza.
That's the beautiful thing about pizza - there's a different style/type for every person's preference.
P.S. We ended up ordering Gino's tonight. Haven't had it in forever, but all the Gino's talk on here inspired a craving. Mmmmmn.
Tried Inky's per Billy's request and LOVED it!!!!!!! : )
I know vito's is a "love it or hate it" type of place, but for those that love it, or are on the fence... they are offering avocado as a topping now, and it is awesome.
I hate the specialty crap, but love their thin crust w/ minimal toppings and no meat. That has become a “go to” dinner in a pinch. I wondered what the avocado would be like. Is it thin slices? Never ate it warm before. Does it melt?
yeah.. i'm not talking specialty either
we went with the thin crust... the avocados are thicker whole slices
and it seemed (at least with our pizza last night) that the avocado was slightly under-ripe, so it held up in the heat (the heat basically ripened it the rest of the way, but it was still slightly firm)
we added Jalapeño's to counter act the flavor :)
Has anyone had Myles pizza in Bowling Green...Great
If you're a fan of New York style, you should definitely try Home Slice downtown. IMO, they have the best NY pizza outside NY!
home slice is excellent, but it's not even close to NY style...
(its way way way too thin crust and the toppings are way too sparse to be called NY)
Has anyone ever tried the pizza place up in Luna Pier? I have heard it isn't very good but I am still curious.
1. Pizza Papalis
2. Capers
3. Inky's
I have to mention Mama Theresa's in Grand Rapids, OH (Their brick oven pizza is worth the drive) and Frosty's Pizza at PIB
Now that I actually think about it, I don’t think I have ever eaten PIZZA from Inkys. I have had tons of other stuff though. Weird.
Do you not like it upso?
i just don't get inky's
other than their eggplant parm (which is excellent)
everything i've eaten there is beyond bland
that said... the atmosphere is great!
Best there is: http://www.chefboyardee.com/tasteefood/kits.jsp

Better yet, Appian Way Pizza. Bring your own cheese. http://mmm-yoso.typepad.com/mmmyoso/images/b0001vs9w401a3rw63r5a3nkmjlzzzzzzz.jpg
My husband likes Gino's, but we've also had pizza at The Village Idiot on Conant Street in Maumee.
I love a good Inkys pizza anytime. but another good place which no one has mention is just over the border in Temperance, MI called the "Village Pizzeria" the beer is pretty reasonable too.

I don't know about the very very best, but I will say that Andrew Z's pizza joint he just opened is really good. He opened a new place in levis commons where the Bistro Wasabi place used to be. Very sports barish, but good pizza and they have other stuff too

Does anyone remember Mr. G's pizza on the corner of Alexis and Whiteford? There used to be a bar in half the building, Mr. G's in the other half. What ever happened to Mr. G?
"Does anyone remember Mr. G's pizza on the corner of Alexis and Whiteford?"
No, but I spent half my childhood pumping quarters into the arcade games at Mr. G's in Swanton...wonder if they were related?

I tried Andrew Z's and didn't care for it. It was not worth the money, i would rather do Pizza Papalis if I'm spending that much on Pizza. Plus Andrew Z's is very small inside.
Mamma Mia's in Parkway Place has some tasty pizza and breadsticks.
Is Inky's open on Sundays? I checked their website and there are no hours posted.
If you like thin crust....in downtown Maumee is a rough little joint called the Village Idiot, it can't be beat for thin crust.

I agree, but I like it better when Sully makes it for me.I had it one time when it was overcooked and it wasn't so good. Most of the time it has been well worth the trip. Also,I love the atmosphere. They also have some very good entertainment.

Really dug Andrew Z's pizza place at Levis commons this week. For me it's #1 in town. It's a bit pricey compared to other places but the quality is amazing, and the quantity it huge. I could only eat 2 slices and even when shared between 3 people we had 1/2 a pie left.

Went to Andrew Z's a few weeks ago and the service was HORRIBLE!!! we had to ask for our own refills, our pizza was under cooked and the worst part about it was they wern't even busy. I won't go there again. Andrew Z should stick to what he does best, host a crappy radio show.

Those folks at the Idiot can take readily available ingredients and create fine pizzas that don’t seem to be duplicated at home (at least my home).
It is an exceptionally good if Sully hand slices pepperoni and grates asiago over it at your table.
