Librarys closing on Saturdays?

I noticed that my local branch - the Washington branch of the toledo public librarys will now only be open Monday thru Friday.

This is sad because I could usually get over there on a saturday easier than going after work during the week.

I understand budget cuts, but it's just kind of disheartening seeing how I cannot remember any time in the last 20 years a library levy being defeated.

maybe Im wrong. Where'd the money go?

That is too bad. But if they were forced to close one day it seems that a weekday would be more beneficial, to them and the patrons. A lot of people can only make it on the weekends.

my thoughts as well, or open at noon instead of 10 all week long or something.

BUT - it might be planned that way so that if they find they have to cut hours, then they figure they should cut them where it'll hurt the public the most - then ask for more bucks.

yeah, closing sunday and monday makes the most sense

It had nothing to do with a levy. A lot of the library's budget came from the state, and with the state of Ohio running in the red, library funding was cut.

So they took your advice for some of the branches and trade Mondays for Saturdays.

Why is Sanger open on Sundays when Main is not?

posted by ifXthenWhyNot on Sep 24, 2009 at 02:24:33 pm     #

If I recall correctly each branch reviewed its usage and tried to remain open on the days/hours that historically were the most busy. Each was directed to achieve a percentage cut.

another socialist establishment affected by state budget cuts and shrinking tax revenues

Don't be paranoid thinking it is some kind of plot. It would keep things more consistent to do without Saturdays. Also, I think students would be hurt more by a weekday closing than a Saturday closing. It is funny, people whine about paying taxes but they whine when you cut services. You can't have it both ways.

Note up above where I said "I cannot remember any time in the last 20 years a library levy being defeated."

You say you cant have it both ways - looks to me like we ARE getting it both ways. Being taxed AND gettign the cuts.

Billy, you know darn well the library is closing because its subsidy from the state of Ohio is being cut. Why is the state of Ohio subsidy being cut? It's true that revenue is down because of the economy, but even more to blame is the Big Republican Tax cut the Republican legislature pushed through that has been taking effect over the past few years. http://www.dispatchpolitics.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2008/11/27/copy/BadRevenue.ART_ART_11-27-08_A1_REC258M.html?sid=101

On top of that is the Bush tax cuts for his "haves" and his "have mores" so that they can become "have even mores." The joke will be on them, because in gutting taxes, pay, social services, and American jobs, they have sold our nation in a kind of huge garage sale to China. They destroyed the worker base, the tax base, the social base, and their consumer base. Within a century it will be the Chinese appearing off our coast with their suitcases full of dollars, ready to take possession of their property. You may think this is funny, but it is the truth, and it is all rooted in the Republican policies of the past 30 years.

I don't know about today, but a couple years ago, Ohio ranked as the 3rd highest taxed state in the nation when adding up state and local taxes. It seems Ohio routinely ranks in the top 5 or top 10 for being the least tax-friendly state.

Last year, Forbes released the Top 10 Fastest-Dying Cities, and four of those were from Ohio: Youngstown, Canton, Dayton and Cleveland. Two were from Michigan. And several Ohio cities have a high poverty rate, based upon 2007 data.

But all will be well for Ohio once the state gets more gambling, just look at Michigan.

And Toledo will be wonderful again once the new arena opens, just look at Cleveland and Detroit.

Well, thanks to our Republican legislature, we have now become one of the most business friendly states. In his last address, the Governor made a statement that we are now in the bottom range of taxes. Still waiting for the jobs to start rolling in. http://74.125.93.132/search?q=cache:fbXfN3h4AO0J:www.ohiomeansbusiness.com/docs/Ohio_2009_Tax_Report.pdf+ohio+%22tax+cuts%22+%22business+friendly%22&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

But you know, smart businesses also look at the educational level of a population, as well as other factors that are directly supported by taxes.

If the economic, social, educational, and human infrastructure is in bad shape, I sincerely doubt if that is going to attract many businesses.

Sep 22, 2009 Dayton Daily News story titled Ohio’s tax system unfriendly to business, report says :

Ohio has among the least business-friendly tax systems in the country, according to a Washington-based organization that monitors and analyzes tax policies. The Tax Foundation’s annual State Business Tax Climate Index, released on Tuesday, Sept. 22, rated Ohio 47th among the 50 states — roughly the same ranking Ohio has received in the report annually since 2006.

The foundation said it ranks the states on the basis of corporate income, individual income, sales, property and unemployment insurance taxes. The “score” for each state is weighted based on the impact of a tax to a business, the foundation said.

The Ohio Department of Taxation doesn’t agree with the assessment, spokesman John Kohlstrand said. Under Ohio tax reforms enacted in 2005, the state has eliminated the corporation franchise tax — levied on either a business’ net worth or net income — and replaced it with the commercial activity tax (CAT), levied on gross receipts, the revenue of a business, Kohlstrand noted. The Ohio Supreme Court upheld the CAT last week, rejecting a challenge by Ohio grocers.

The state also is phasing out personal property taxes on a company’s machinery, equipment and inventory, a levy that had been in effect since 1846. In addition, Ohio is phasing in a 21 percent, across-the-board reduction in personal income taxes, which should be completely reflected in 2010 tax returns, Kohlstrand said. That, coupled with other state tax reforms in recent years, reduces the collective burden on Ohio taxpayers by $2.1 billion, he said.

The top 10 states in the 2010 Index, from 1st to 10th, are:

1. South Dakota
2. Wyoming
3. Alaska
4. Nevada
5. Florida
6. Montana
7. New Hampshire
8. Delaware
10. Washington and Utah

The bottom 10 states, from 41st to 50th, are

41. Vermont
42. Wisconsin
43. Minnesota
44. Rhode Island
45. Maryland
46. Iowa
47. Ohio
48. California
49. New York
50. New Jersey

I agree with Ryan. I dont go as often as I'd like but 100% of the time it's on the weekend.

Most people can't go M-F let alone during the day.

Always felt companies struggling should cut their weakest hours first like before noon M-F or heck before 2-3pm M-F.

But the weekend? :(

Why dont we just sign all of our paychecks over to the state and federal governments and let them decide how our money should be spent. They would give us our housing, our food, our clothing, our health care, our public transportation and maybe have a library that is open on saturday. That way everybody would be equal and we wouldn't be able to bitch about all those rich bastards. We could just take all their money and spend it on the masses.

http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2008/01/26/BRAG.ART_ART_01-26-08_A1_J495SR8.html

"State income-tax rates are being slashed by 21 percent."

"A despised state tax on business inventories is being phased out, as is the corporate-franchise tax."

"Limits were imposed on damages in medical malpractice cases and lawsuits against businesses."

"The state continues to award a host of grants, loans, tax abatements and other breaks in exchange for the promise of jobs."

"The consequence could be that the state will soon not have sufficient resources to pay for all of the services that businesses expect from states, including a good educational system to produce an educated work force, training programs to make workers job-ready, and the like."

Just an FYI- The Way Public Library in Perrysburg will still be open both Saturdays and Sundays. Also, for those of you who don't attend school, all ohio state financial aid has been eliminated also, on top of most library closing. I thought education was going to be priority this time around but unforunatly that is not the case. It seems like the only fat being cut from the state budget is educational fat.

i love toledo has gotten his union underwear all balled up again about bush and republicans and lower taxes. Fact of the matter is that Ohio is still a hell of a long way away from being business friendly. Too high of taxes and way too many bad union attitudes. For those of us who have broken away from union jobs and have become successful on their own have also found that leaving town is beneficial to retaining a better living with lower taxes. Hang in there i love toledo cuz you belong.

Recent Report: "Tax Cuts Don't Improve Ohio's Economy"

http://www.ctj.org/taxjusticedigest/archive/2009/01/new_report_tax_cuts_dont_impro.php

"The report finds unmistakable evidence that the state's relative economic decline accelerated since H.B. 66 was passed." In terms of important economic indicators including economic output, productivity, manufacturing and income, Ohioans haven't enjoyed any of the promises that tax cuts were said to provide."

"Requiring the wealthy to pay their fair share"

What do poor people need with the huge defence, security, and judicial system of the US? It is rich who require it all.

Poor people dont need security?

By that are you saying we should cut the programs that provide security for them then?

posted by billy on Sep 25, 2009 at 07:59:38 am     #

Sure, poor people need security, but that is not why we have this huge structure. It is for the rich to protect the status quo. You don't think they built all this stuff for poor people do you? If that's what you think, then you are more naive than I thought. Then there are the Bush wars. It wasn't the poor and middle class who wanted those, but instead Bush's cronies who pushed for that. Let W and his "haves" and "have mores" pay for just those and I will be happy!

Dude - bush isnt the president any more. And on top of that, the president doesnt declare war, congress does. The dem's have had the majority there since 2006. Why are we still there if it's all bush??

Now, here's a little experiment for you - you give me two numbers. First is the amount of income where greater than or equal to makes you "rich" and the second amount where equal to or lesser than makes you "poor".

You give me those two figures and I'll provide you with the percent of taxes that those various groups pay, and you can see if they're fair or not.

You'll get to make the call.

Undeniably, the root of so many of our current problems was the Bush administration.

"There's no question in my view that Bush was the most fiscally irresponsible president in the history of the republic," said David M. Walker, the comptroller general under Bush. (A republican)

From Pat Buchanan:

"We charge that a cabal of polemicists and public officials seek to ensnare our country in a series of wars that are not in America’s interests. We charge them with colluding with Israel to ignite those wars and destroy the Oslo Accords. We charge them with deliberately damaging U.S. relations with every state in the Arab world that defies Israel or supports the Palestinian people’s right to a homeland of their own. We charge that they have alienated friends and allies all over the Islamic and Western world through their arrogance, hubris, and bellicosity."

Hey, calm down. All I'm doing is pointing out Republican hypocrisy and fault with respect to the current mess our nation faces. If you want facts, figures, definitions, and the like you can go dig it up yourself. If you want to split hairs about the meaning of words, then you are welcome to do that with yourself. The fact is there is alot of truth concerning what me and the Republicans I quoted have said. If it was all laughable you would not be getting so upset and defensive about it. No, I must have struck a nerve or you would not be responding as you do.

Well really, who could take it seriously?

You pull up CTJ and the first word in their own description of themselves is 'liberal' - so that says loud and clear that their first drive is political before anything else.

I go into the stats of the article and see they are provided by Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy. I google Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy and it takes me right back to the CTJ site.

So by now Im starting to smell the coffee burning, and I look further for more NON CTJ items and the first thing I find is an article by someone else taking another of their articles and showing it's full of holes.

We can play he said she said all day long and toss left wing and right wing stuff back and forth, but seriously, what's the point - you're not going to prove anything to me with that kind of posting, and I honestly dont give a shit what you think so I'll stick by "didnt care".
