Another restaurant inquiry by Fatty Arbuckle....

Has anybody been out to Serenity Soul Food on Woodville Rd? Are there any other places where you can get some good southern grub? I have a hankering for some greens and such…

I've wondered about that spot as well.. in general it's always seemed like toledo has an odd lack of soul food.

Several years ago, Sebree Restaurant on Reynolds Rd was such a place and probably my favorite restaurant at the time. They had the best liver and onions, the best fried catfish, the best mac and cheese, excellent chicken, wonderful sweet potato pie, delicious sweet tea, and amazing green beans. I don't know how green beans could be exciting, but they did it. And I think it was Grandpa who played the piano while patrons dined.

But earlier this decade, the Sebree owners went a different route, focusing on their frozen food business or something like that, called Aunt Minnie's.

I don't know the date of this story about Aunt Minnie's titled Port Authority Grant Spurs Move by Aunt Minnie’s Back to Central City

Aunt Minnie’s is the brainchild of Minnie Sebree and her daughter, Sebree-Pressley. The pair opened a restaurant about 15 years ago and, after five years, closed that operation in order to focus on frozen food distribution. Aunt Minnie produces four frozen food items – cornbread stuffing, sweet potato pie, peach cobbler and blackberry cobbler.

From the Aunt Minnie's Web site:

Aunt Minnie was born in Mound Bayou, Mississippi. Aunt Minnie and her daughter Claudia would later open a small restaurant in Toledo, Ohio serving the kind of southern-style food that kept people satisfied at the table for hours and talking about their meals for days.

That's for sure. I wish one of their family members would bring back the restaurant.

Upso, I checked your wifes blog first. I did find The Jerk Hut that seems it would have filled the void somewhat. But the phone is no longer in order so they must have closed.

They closed :(

yeah, they closed...
the only soul food I can find in the city is BBQ related
not so much the fried chicken / greens variety

Ruby's Kitchen - 4933 Dorr St. 419-578-5388. Close to Reynolds & Dorr.

They have very good traditional soul food. Not everything is offered every day. It's best to stop and get a "to go " menu to learn what's available when. They do a heck of a carry out business. The dining room is very nice. The place is very clean and attractive in a homestyle kind of way. If you go on Sunday get there early before the church folk or else the place fills up. (Seeing all the lady's hats is worth getting there for.) Outstanding corn bread. We've never had a bad meal or bad service.

Thanks Holland. I actually found their website and the menu looks pretty good!

Serenity Soul Food is a buffet, $10, can eat-in or take-out. IMHO, the selection was limited but the food is excellent.

Awesome. Glad you liked it. I am going to try and make it out there this weekend. According to their website you can order online and specify times and everything for carry out. Still no greens; but what do you do?

Last weekend, my wife and I got take out at Ruby's Kitchen, and the food was great. I got the fried catfish, fried okra, coleslaw, and sweet tea. I ordered online. Slick process. I plan to go back this week for something else. I ate at Nagoya last Friday, and it was fine, but Ruby's Kitchen is more my speed. I'm glad this thread got created.

I'm up for Ruby's Kitchen catfish and okra. How about an evening next? They close at 8:00 p.m. Here's a better link to the TCP story.

Since I carried out last night I thought I should do the same tonight and went to Rubys Kitchen finally.

WOAH! We are so lucky to have so many great places to eat. I got the half slab ribs. Normally that means 4 bones. I opened the box and there had to be 10 in there. On top of that the dinner came with two sides (I opted for baked beans and slaw, I like to try the basics at a new place) and cornbread. Sauce is great and ribs are very tender without being mushy. Thumbs way up Ruby. I will definitely be going back and expanding my horizons. Have leftovers for lunch tomorrow.

But now where to for dinner? LOL!

Not so. Roscoe Conkling "Fatty" Arbuckle was an actor whose life was destroyed by William Randolph Hearst. Arbuckle was accused of raping and causing the death of a young, innocent actress, Virginia Rappe. He did neither and she was neither.

Roscoe was having a party and celebrating a recent success. Rappe had more miles on her than I-75.
