Factoid about new movie (Jun 22, 2007) "1408"
Stephen King never intended on finishing the short story that this movie was based upon; it was part of an appendix in his nonfiction book On Writing. In the preface to the story published in the compilation "Everything's Eventual," King says that he wrote the first three or four pages as an example of draft evolution, then was "seduced" into finishing it.

Ron Paul opposes Gold Medal for Reagan

I must, however, oppose the Gold Medal for Ronald and Nancy Reagan because appropriating $30,000 of taxpayer money is neither constitutional nor, in the spirit of Ronald Reagan's notion of the proper, limited role for the federal government. To me, it seemed a particularly good opportunity to demonstrate one's genuine convictions by spending one's own money rather that of the taxpayers who remain free to contribute, at their own discretion, to commemorate the work of the Reagans. It is, of course, very easy to be generous with the people's money.

Johnsongrass - I use glyphosate (Razor Pro is cheapest) in my yard to kill clumps of Johnson grass that seeds into my lawn grass. I take a two liter bottle and cut it in half. The half that has the bottle neck is put around my backpack sprayer nozzel. I walk around from clump to clump and don't worry about overspray. The area with the Johnson grass is killed while yard grass is not.

Ban the Bulb?

I got a really interesting book called “Ernest Hemingway on Writing.” I’ve given about 100 of those away. I find that if you’re stuck on a story, you can just read around in there and find something that jump-starts you. So, it’s useful. I’m not sure what the magic is, but it seems to work for everybody that I give it to.

Knight Citizen News Network is an initiative of J-Lab: The Institute for Interactive Journalism, a center of the University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism. It is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Chi-Town Daily News : Features original daily reports from a cadre of local journalism students (the "Medill News Service"), plus citizen reporters and bloggers, as well as a photo gallery, sports podcast, and other creative uses of online media, has one especially cool interface trick: The home page features a "neighborhood report" box -- a Google Map that links to specific current local stories.

Sunlight Priorities 2007

1.) Contemporaneous online filing. The currently required public reports required of lawmakers should be filed electronically and shared online within 24 hours of their filing.

2.) Ending secret legislation. All earmarks, bills, and amendments should include an identification of the proposing Member's name. All non-emergency legislation should be posted online, in its final form, at least 72 hours before a vote.

3.) Meaningful lobbyist disclosure. All who are paid to engage in direct issue advocacy with lawmakers and their staff should be required to register, and all registered lobbyists should disclose all legislative contacts, all legislation and regulations discussed, all contributions they make and coordinate to Members and organizations affiliated with members, all prior government employment, and any relationship to a current Member of Congress, staff member, or executive branch employee. All lobbyist reports should be filed online within 24 hours of any meeting or contribution.

Sunlight Priorities Drafting Wiki located at another Sunlight Foundation project : MorePerfect.org .

Dec 14, 2006 NY Times editorial titled Congress and the Benefits of Sunshine :

The Web is increasingly wielded by both campaign donors and bloggers clicking and tapping as wannabe muckrakers. Politicians would be wise to catch up. Local citizens were enlisted to track pork-barrel abuses in the last campaign by a new watchdog organization, the Sunlight Foundation, which enlisted Ms. Gillibrand’s disclosure pledge. It aims to have voters use the Internet as an engine of political information.

McCain’s War On Blogs

John McCain has made clear that he doesn’t like the blogosphere.

Now he has introduced legislation that would treat blogs like Internet service providers and hold them responsible for all activity in the comments sections and user profiles. Some highlights of the legislation :

– Commercial websites and personal blogs “would be required to report illegal images or videos posted by their users or pay fines of up to $300,000.”

– Internet service providers (ISPs) are already required to issue such reports, but under McCain’s legislation, bloggers with comment sections may face “even stiffer penalties” than ISPs.

— Social networking sites will be forced to take “effective measures” — such as deleting user profiles — to remove any website that is “associated” with a sex offender. Sites may include not only Facebook and MySpace, but also Amazon.com, which permits author profiles and personal lists, and blogs like DailyKos, which allows users to sign up for personal diaries.

too many starbucks

If you stand on the corner of Regent Street and Wigmore Street in central London, you are within five miles of 164 branches of Starbucks. Starbucks is a long-time practitioner of clustering, whereby the chain opens outlets so close to each other that it ends up cannibalising its own business. At first glance, this doesn't seem to make any business sense. "But that's because they're in it for the long game, which is market share," says Andrew Simms, of the New Economics Foundation, which has published reports condemning the "cloning" of the British high street. In other words, cannibalisation is worth it, if the overall effect is to solidify your position as the first name anyone thinks of when they think of coffee.

Like Wal-Mart. Starbucks is the Wal-Mart of coffee shops. Starbucks's goal is to bury other coffee shops and to make sure that nearly every cup of coffee you drink outside of the home or office is from Starbucks.

“Those who are too smart to engage in politics are punished by being governed by those who are dumber.” - Plato.
