Yeah, hunting season. I can't wait!

Monday, November 30, 2009
By John Hayes, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The Pennsylvania Game Commission is investigating four hunting accidents that injured five hunters today, the opening of the statewide firearm deer season. None of the injuries were fatal.

At about 9 a.m., a firearm dropped from a tree stand accidentally discharged, injuring a father and daughter hunting in Center Township, Indiana County. One was struck in the hand, the other was injured in the hand and leg.

In separate incidents, three hunters were injured in self-inflicted shooting accidents. In Derry Township, Westmoreland County, a hunter was shot in the ankle. A hunter was injured in Benton Township, Lackawanna County, and in Greenwood Township, Clearfield County, state police responded to an incident that occurred at 9:34 a.m.

Authorities were withholding the names of accident victims until their families can be notified.

The Allegheny County Health Department said 12 accidental shooting accidents, including three fatalities, occurred during last year's firearm deer season.

holland: sadly I agree, always worried about my family this time of year, luckily they use some sense when they're out looking for deer.

Understood. When I was a runner I used to completely avoid any wooded areas until gun season was over. Accidents happen.

I suspect a lot of the "accidents" involve a quart of whiskey or a couple cases of beer.

Real hunters take it seriously and safely. At least that's what my dad says.

Sort of like those who burn themselves deep-frying a turkey.

I feel bad for the father and daughter - as for the hunters who shoot themselves and other hunters....well....not so.

Yeah but you dress funny;)

Everyone knows to stay out the hell out of the woods during gun season but other hunters but not all deer hunters are named Bubba!

In case anyone’s keeping score: Blade-A total of 178,397 deer have been taken so far in Ohio this fall when combining the adult and youth gun seasons, early muzzleloader season, and the first six weeks of the archery season. That compares to a total of 179,194 killed last year during the same time period. In 2008, hunters took a record total of 252,017 deer during all of last year's hunting seasons.

The week saw six hunter shooting incidents, all nonfatal, down one from a year ago and within the range of the number of incidents for the last 10 years. The days, totals, and counties of the incidents include: Tuesday, two, Tuscarawas and Richland; Wednesday, one, Shelby; Friday, one, Sandusky; and Sunday, two, Logan and Ashtabula
