Not yet. Went to Cinco De Mayo on Airport (near Holloway Rd. by Menards) last night and loved it. I had the Carnitas (pork) and a $4.99 house Margie. It was all gooooooooood. DH had the tostaguac - no Margie. (He drinks either Dos Equies or Pacifico) He was impressed. Lively decor, good service, cleaner than El Saltos and every bit their equal in food quality. They run coupons. Unfortunately we didn't have them with us. Their prices are quite reasonable.

I always wondered what tostaguac was???????

Glad the place seems good.

A basic traditional tostaguac is a fried corn tortilla with guacamole, lettuce and salsa. Different restuarants usually add their own twist, generally adding beans. It often winds up being close to a tostada. When we get to Mexico my gringo, born in the US south, husband takes me into the inner city areas of any city we visit to eat from local restuarants or street vendor food stands, risking all kinds of bacterial poisoning. He likes eating Mexican on the "edge". We've never gotten sick, but I'm positive that was due to luck. He wont, however, eat anything, anywhere in Tiajuana. It's a cesspool. The most notable eating street vendor experience came from a small town somewhere in the Yucatan. It was a peeled tangerine on a stick rolled in cayenne pepper. We called it the "agony and the ecstacy".

Are there any authentic Mole-based Mexican restaurants in Toledo or do they all serve the same Flour tortilla tubes drowning in a sea of refried beans and melted cheese?

I don’t know about that, but our waitress at El Camino last week had some cute freckles.

There's that Mexican place at the base of the High Level...

What was his name Ryan?

What is the name of the place at the base of the High Level? I tried to find it once and couldn't. Is there a street address?

the one under the high level is

http://www.yelp.com/biz/san-marcos-toledo

And Toledo Wire, you'd be hard pressed to find a place in town that isnt taco bell with a liquor license.

On a different thread, someone posted this list of TBLL establishments:

El Camino
El Vaquero
Venturas
Casa Barrons
The one in Maumee in the Golden Gate Plaza
Loma Lindas
Barrons

Pretty much spot on. That being said, on occasion I happen to LIKE TBLL, mostly for the LL part of things...

But if you want to try authentic, you can try the one who's site I posted. El Sueno on Laskey is pretty good as well. As is Cinco De Mayo.

Excellent. Where are my keys?

The one in Maumee in the Golden Gate Plaza = El Saltos
Great Margies and food. Decor needs a little cleaning and touch up, but not a reason not to go there.

Yeah, San Marcos. What would be great is if they would open a real restaurant, with drinks. Of course, some how, it would eff everything up.

Ok, we went to La Vista last night. First off, location - it's the former Long John Silvers on Reynolds between Angola and Airport. That will give you the 'where' and an idea of the size of the place - relatively small.

They're just getting started, and are still going thru the process of the liquor license - they'll have one, but Toledo oh under Carty is not the most business friendly environment, so these things dont go right thru.

That all being said, we had a wonderful time - the wait staff was fun and friendly, and the food was AWESOME. In fact the owner himself came out to ask what we thought. He told us he'd gone to culinary school and spent 10 years working in restaurants in the dominican republic, and still owns a place down there, but he's from toledo, and wanted to bring that type of food here.

Food was well done, and tasteful. Those of you who want a margie to go with their food will want to wait a bit before going, but I dont drink much, and we'll be back very soon.

Thanks for the info billy. BTW the City administration has next to no part in the issuance of a Liquor permit. I've had several. It's the State Of Ohio Department of Liquor Control. While the City will be notified and asked if they have any objections, it's a formality unless they really have some documented reason that Liquor Control didn't uncover in their application process. I can attest to how difficult they are to get issued or transferred by the State. Things can stall at any point in the process and the Sate will not notify the applicant if there are any glitches in the paperwork or additional documentation needed. They just sit on it. If the applicant doesn't follow up the application process with repeated phone calls it might not get issued. If the applicant waits too long to find out what the holdup is, sometimes they make you start over. Been there.

OK billy. A couple of things you forgot to mention about La Vista:

1. The waitresses wear just a couple of small pieces of black spandex. Yow!

2. The food isn't Tex Mex but Island Style Mexican.
It was excellent. We'll be back. Both of us for the food and hubby for the cute 4'8" stacked brunette that wore less spandex than covers a couch cushion. It was chilly in there because the door opens directly into the small dining room and a cold draft blows in. Other than that I'd say it should do really well, once patrons realize that the food is Carribean style and not the real heavy Tex Mex. Don't even need any Margis to enjoy it.

We also stopped by La Vista today. Food is very fresh... a bit pricy, but worthwhile! I enjoyed the vegetable plato and the other half had the shrimp tacos. We even shared a little bowl of fried ice cream to top off the meal.

I agree with the statement about it being slightly drafty, but we weren't seated close to the door. We, also, will definitely return!

Holland,

Sorry, I forgot about what the waitresses wore - wasnt that big a deal to me, or my wife, other than the fact that my wife was concerned that they werent properly dressed for those drafts you spoke about. As far as the caribbean fare, you must've missed the
part where I said He told us he'd gone to culinary school and spent 10 years working in restaurants in the dominican republic, and still owns a place down there, but he's from toledo, and wanted to bring that type of food here.

Woo-hoo! Finally! A new Mexican style restaurant to enjoy that doesn't smother everything in grease and fake cheese sauce.

Can't wait to try it. Thanks folks.

With apologies to Molsonator:

Anyone have an update on this place? Did they ever get a liquor license?

A couple of reviewers here: http://maps.google.com/maps/place?rls=com.microsoft:en-us&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=la+vista+toledo&fb=1&gl=us&hq=la+vista&hnear=Toledo,+OH&cid=6209786478547788799&dtab=2&ei=K6h_TJSjMI2MnQfUg5WjAQ&sa=X&oi=local_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CBUQqgUwAA sure sound unhappy about it!

A coworker just went there and said it was great. Not typical Mexican fare and “more fresh veggies and less cheese” was the way they put it.

Thanks Ryan. More veggies and less cheese suits me just fine.

The guys and I tried to go to La Vista for lunch today, but the place wasn't open. We got there around 11:30am and the 4 of us plus several others were staring at the sign on the door "open at 11am". Well they weren't.

We went down to Byblos (they sucked bad) and passed La Vista again on the way back to work. This time the waitresses were sitting on the front step in street cloths waiting too...

If they can't run a set schedule, I can't see them staying open.
