welcome to the board spam guy!

posted by upso on Dec 28, 2009 at 01:23:55 am     #

What the hell...Im gonna give this guy a chance. I have 2 computers to get rid of that are no longer used.

posted by OhioKimono on Dec 28, 2009 at 02:13:05 am     #

hahahahaha! Let's see, computers with specs of gold in their boards and circuits? Poor spammer is looking to cash in perhaps.

posted by djimpelr on Dec 28, 2009 at 08:34:50 am     #

So what if he DOES want to scrape the gold off the circuit board?? If he's willing to come get your old pc and haul it off for you, so what?

I knew a guy who lived in 'da hood' who took old pc's and fixed em up a bit and made them available for poor people. What's wrong with that?

Spend $10 or so to have your hard drive profesionally wiped, reinstall a clean copy of whatever operating system you had, then donate it to the Cherry Sreet Mission. Take a charitable tax deduction for the whole thing. You'll feel good about it.

holland: well said.

Used/old hardware has pretty much no resell value. Computers in general are becoming so cheap they are practically disposable every couple years (sadly).

Have seen many people on ebay sell bulk CPU's for gold harvesting. Unless this guy is trying to build a cluster :)

posted by INeedCoffee on Dec 28, 2009 at 12:42:47 pm     #

I have donated a number of my old pcs to charity over the years. At the moment, I could use the cash, so selling a pc off would be nice.

Good advise Holland about wiping the HD. Most people don't even think about it. ID thieves will also collect old computers for the HD's and then harvest any sensitive information off of them and sell it.

I'm not saying that's what this person is doing though. Just a little bit of information for ya all to be aware of.

Hello again all!
Thank you everyone for all the emails regarding my post, you are keeping me very busy! This is NOT a spam post. I live in Toledo in the beverly area. I do NOT have any interest in the information you have on your hard drives. It would actually make me feel more comfortable if you did wipe the hard drive before you gave it to me. I take the computers, refurbish them, and sell them at a VERY discounted rate! People who can not afford a new system enjoy taking full advantage of my discount systems. Any parts that I can not use are recycled properly. They are not thrown in landfills where they can create more pollution. I am an entrepreneur. I am helping people, doing my part to help our environment and I am supporting myself. Nothing to hide here. If you have a PC at home collecting dust, shoot me an email.

Thanks again Toledo and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Do you still take old PC's? We're not looking for money, but I have probably 30-40+ I'd like to get rid of.

Holland... I have a question for you. How do you wipe your harddrive and put windows back on for $10?? I am turning in my old work laptop soon and want to delete all my info from it before I do...thanks.

posted by ShonuffisDead on Dec 02, 2010 at 02:35:41 pm     #

Why wipe it if you know how you can just peruse through and purge all your documents and stuff, True easier to reinstall though.

posted by Linecrosser on Dec 02, 2010 at 04:57:50 pm     #

Personally I'd reformat the hard drive before the reinstall.

didn't get a response. Just overflowing with computer and items that need recycling but prefer to get it donated/recycled for free rather than pay $5 per computer. I literally have 30-40+ computers maybe 20-30 old monitors and just boxes of random stuff.

It's for work so the cost is important, plus my time having to load and haul it somewhere.

some laptops like dell have a hidden partition that lets you reset your computer. You hold a key like f10 while booting, and give the option to restore to factory. Basically a image of the computer new, wipes everything and puts everything back at new. Also means any update are gone, just like you pulled it out of the box new. Well not that new but anything installed or saved since new is gone.

see? what's the deal with this guy? you'd think he'd be jumping all over INC's offer, it's just dropping in his lap! why do you put out requests for stuff then not reply to the people with the stuff? shoddy and unorganized, not a good way to run a business, IF that's what this is.

Nana,

This post was from almost one year ago. This person may not even be interested anymore.

Here are two old threads that contain suggestions on where to donate used computers:

Places suggested:

  • Lucas County Children Services for teens in its Independent Living and Post-Emancipation programs
  • Cherry Street Mission
  • mental health agency such as Unison/Rescue/Zepf
  • St. Charles Borromeo School
  • Sherman school, near St. Vs
  • senior centers
  • Self-Expression Teen Theater Institute
  • Linux User group for the Murchison Center
