I don't understand why the Toledo Blade isn't covering this story a little closer, and perhaps i'm missing something... but why is it, that a man who attacks another man to the point where they are in critical condition (and eventually dead) is allowed to walk free right now?

"Toledo police arrested Norman Corggens, 20, of Toledo, for felonious assault the day of the fight, but have not charged him or anyone else with murder, Noble said. Corggens was released on bond after a hearing in Toledo Municipal Court."
um... it was murder. Marland Woods received injuries that eventually killed him by Norman Corggens.
Does anyone have more details on this story? Marland Woods died on saturday, and since it's the holiday weekend I suspect it may take a dew days before this gets properly reported but the fact that the Findlay Courier has a more comprehensive story about this than the Toledo blade has me scratching my head.
My God, talk about senseless!!
Hunker said he was told the fight started after one person bumped another on the dance floor, and the altercation prompted Caesar's personnel to clear the bar.
How terrible. I work with a friend of Woods', who knows him and his family, and they are all devistated.
Check the age of the guy charged with assault - he shouldnt have even been there in the first place!!
This is very strange that there has virually been nothing about this, regardless of the timing.
"devistated" should be spelled "devastated"
"virually" should be spelled "virtually"
no one cares, Chuck. Seriously - no one cares. A man died in our community for no reason and you worry about spelling. What a douche bag.
Agreed. I write and teach about writing for a living, and the only time I have ever criticized spelling or grammar on a website is when people hold themselves up as paragons of rhetorical perfection.
Like CharlesBronson, for example, who seems to be unaware of the rules of punctuation, capitalization, and the creation of complete sentences.
I like the way you conclusively conclude your conclusions, while deftly delving into the pedantic areas of this arena, if such areas are actually around.
Gay people don't have souls so it wasn't murder.
Where did the gay part come from? I didn't read that anywhere.
Caesars Show Bar is a bar that caters to the rowdier elements of the LGBT community, Wulf. It was briefly mentioned in the article, but those of us who have worked downtown would probably be more familiar with it.
Err... people talk, and word gets around, right?
:-}
Anyways, the female impersonators are supposed to be the selling point of the place. I used to have a couple of employees who went all out on amateur night - one went as Madonna and another as Annie Lennox.
You're right. The story isn't getting a lot of publicity. I suppose you could argue discrimination.
If we are to believe commercial media, Police... placed 20-year-old Norman Coggins under arrest. Coggins was later arraigned on charges of felonious assault and released; he is due back in court on Jan. 8.
From: http://www.edgeboston.com/index.php?ch=news&sc=&sc2=news&sc3=&id=100371
Which means, to me anyway, that the prosecutor doesn't have enough evidence to file manslaughter or murder changes, much less make the charges stick and get a guilty verdict. Coggins might be out on his own recognizance which would indicate that he's not a flight risk, and that the charges might be a little tough to prove anyway.
We shall see, but this looks for all the world like a crime that will go essentially unsolved.
Yeah, they kind of left it to the readers imagination.
Woods was a gay man, who had a 10-year domestic partnership with Brian Hunker. The two purchased a house together in Findlay in 2005 and had a commitment ceremony in September, Hunker said.
Hank loves a big weiner in his mouth.
At least that leaves auto fellatio out of the picture.
Were they both gay? It seems that if the perp was straight, and the victim gay, it would be on CNN.
I would assume since they were both at a gay bar, that they both were gay...
Corggins was charged with Felony assault - article says there were a number of people fighting, could it be that corggins was charged with assaulting someone else, and that's why the charge didnt upgrade to murder when the Woods died?
remember, this is the blade reporting...
Actually, the Findley Courier.
"Gay people don't have souls so it wasn't murder."
Really??
I don't know any of you well enough to know if this was a serious or non-serious comment. Hopefully, the latter.
I think the Hank account is a fake account so take it as a unfunny "joke"
I wonder if Terrance Osley (guy arrested for death of Marlan Woods) is related to the Osleys who were involved in the Utica Street Incident?
(For those who don't recall, about a decade ago, there was a group of boys in the 11-15 year old age range who beat a disabled Vietnam vet and did unspeakable things to him. Urinated on him, burned him with a cigarette lighter, bound him with an electrical cord so they could punch and beat him, etc.
3 of the young perpetrators were Osleys.)
Also forced him to eat feces and tried to glue his penis to his body. Just a horrible, horrible crime.
I know it wouldn't necessarily be relevant in court, but it would be interesting to hear if the Osley involved in this crime came from the same family as the other 3. Can't imagine its THAT common of a name in Toledo?
It's a serious joke. That is, it's a comment made in jest to highlight an attitude that permeates our culture and also apparently, our justice system.
Thanks for the clarification hank - and you are correct in your observation of this being a cultural attitude.
Perhaps this is why the vaunted Blade isn't covering the story??
Yes, they two men are now charged with involuntary manslaughter. Manslaughter is usually the charge laid on people who kill people without intent to do so.
only 5 & 3 year terms?! what a shame
Classy comments Ryan. Can't wait for you to use those jokes on your kids when they tell you they're gay.
Missed this thread for some reason. Although Ceasers is well known for their drag show, and it does cater to a large number of gays, I have been their many times when straight people (myself included) out numbered the gays. A lot of bachlorette parties end up their so do a lot ooof people who want to shock and awe their friends. Although it has been a few years since I went it was a fun time if your comfortable enough with your own sexuality not to be freaked out by those who are different. I find it appaling that these guys may spend less time for akilling someone than that police officer who shot the biker (which I thought he should have gotten a longer sentence).
so TT blocks the comments on the thread about the former politician who jumped from a parking garage, but the weiner jokes directed at gays that Ryan throws on here is completely acceptable.
Just want to get the rules straight on here.
Why don't you get a job and quit worrying about other people so much ?
whoa. thanks for the reminder on Ryan's horrible comments. geezuz
