Storm Update - Blizzardbill

Hello, still looks like a major winter storm is heading our way. This storm is a slow mover, and will last 24 - 36 hours with snow and wind. The storm last week only lasted 12 hours, but had 40 mph wind gust. I expect the snow to be slow to move in Tuesday ( Dry air is in place now ) but once the snow arrives, it will increase to heavy levels into Tuesday night.
BY Noon Wednesday 5 - 10 inches would have fallen with blowing and drifting.

Winter storm watches posted for the entire area, will most likely be changed to warnings Tonight for Tuesday and Wednesday. Thanks. Blizzardbill ( 13abc )

Somehow having Blizzard Bill with us when one of these storms hit, makes them almost not so bad.

Some years ago my relatives from Traverse City were visiting us over Christmas and we were sitting around drinking coffee and watching the morning news. Suddenly my brother-in-law shouted: "IT'S BLIZARD F**KING BIL!!!!"

Unbeknownst to me at the time, Blizzard Bill used to work in Traverse City, and he has at least two huge fans up there that I know of.

Just curious... I've only lived here about 5 years. This isn't something serious, is it? 5-10 inches doesn't seem like a lot but maybe I'm gauging it wrong.

Nevermind. Just read this.

Toledolen:

8-10 inches in this area is a major storm, for sure, though not quite an epic meteorological event. Expect to be relatively snowbound Tuesday and most of Wednesday - I would recommend running any errands today that are pressing, and rearranging your schedule to minimize driving. If you have to drive to work those days, be sure to give yourself at least double the normal drive time.

Toledo's budget woes might play a role in how soon the city roads are cleared - I suspect that the city will be trying to minimize overtime, so many of the neighborhood streets might not see a plow for a few days. They may also lay down a pre-emptive layer of salt and decide to leave most of the snow removal until after the majority has fallen.

Last weekend's snow had some favorable timing: it was a short-and-sweet dumping that mostly occurred overnight. This gave the road crews some nearly-empty streets to get a head start and meant that there were fewer passes needed. The next storm could last 36 hours or more, with many waves and lots of passes by plows to keep the roads driveable. Toledo will either have to suck it up and pay the major OT dollars or try to slowly dig out while minimizing OT.

Any bets on the approach they will take?

Northwest Ohio was under a blizzard warning for a while during the Feb 13-14, 2007 storm. The forecast called for 8 to 16 inches of snow. That storm lasted 24 to 30 hours, and it dumped 9 to 10 inches of snow on the area. But the storm also contained strong winds that caused blowing and drifting snow.

The storm started early Tuesday morning and ended Wednesday. Lucas County remained in a Level 3 Snow Emergency until Wednesday afternoon. Toledo area highway roads, however, were mostly clear by Wednesday afternoon. But blowing snow continued into Wednesday night, and some counties to the south and east of Toledo were still under a Level 3 Snow Emergency on Wednesday night.

Cancellations were numerous on Wed, Feb 14, 2007. UT and BGSU closed that day.

The Toledo temperature on Thu, Feb 15, 2007 dipped to minus 8.

Mid-afternoon NWS statement on Tue, Feb 13, 2007:

Coastal Flood Statement.
Gale force northeast winds at 40 to 45 mph are expected to develop
late this afternoon and continue through the night over Lake Erie.
The strong winds will cause water levels on Lake Erie to rise in
the western basin even though the lake is mostly ice covered.

There is the possibility that as the water level rises... ice could
begin to break apart and be pushed on shore producing shoreline
damage. The rising water could also cause some flooding in areas
prone to the effects of high water

Mid-afternoon NWS statement on Tue, Feb 13, 2007

The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a Blizzard
Warning... which is in effect until 7 am EST Wednesday. The Winter
Storm Warning is also in effect from 7 am to 12 PM EST Wednesday.

A major winter storm is ongoing across the region... and will
continue into Wednesday morning. Heavy snow... with significant
blowing and drifting snow... will continue this afternoon and
tonight. Northwest winds gusting to 40 mph will cause visibilities
to be reduced to less than one quarter of a mile at times this
afternoon and tonight causing white out conditions. By Wednesday
morning... storm total snowfall of 8 to 16 inches is possible
likely making some roads impassible. A few spots may see up to 20
inches. Wind chills will also drop to 10 below tonight.

Officially, Toledo Express received 8.6 inches of snow from the Feb 13-14, 2007 storm, but some areas in Ohio got over 15 inches of snow. On Feb 15, 2007, the temperature at Toledo Express dropped to minus 8 degrees Fahrenheit, setting a record low for that date.

This is good opportunity to check on older relatives, neighbors, or those who might need checking in on. Not only for the snow, but the heat, water, etc. The last thing we need is needless deaths due to neglect.

I'm just glad that I got my first time having the new garbage cans picked up out of the way today. Set them near the curb last night, and got up at 6:30 to put them in the street with the wheels against the curb (or as near it as I could get with the snow still there). I pity those in the inner city who have pickup Wednesday if they have the new cans. But we're saving money doing it ourselves.

I was at Kroger Miracle Mile tonight. Jeez, the place was wiped out. You'd think people were expecting to be snowed in for a week.
When was the last time anyone here was ever snowed in? I'm guessing 1978.

i hear ya nana. working from home pretty much takes away the joy of any "day off" everyone else gets.

Jeepmaker, I was in this morning just before noon to get some cold medication and things I thought we'd need. No, we won't be snowed in for any length of time, but now at least if we get slammed, I don't have to go anywhere unless I want to.

I do think that people are freaking out more than normal, because of what has hit the DC area.

Interesting note... I had to report for jury duty this morning. Many of us were dismissed early because of the storm coming in. There was a trial scheduled to start today that's expected to last five days. They didn't want to start it and risk having to postpone it. Jurors might be able to commit five days this week, but maybe not next week.

I was at krogers on super bowl night and it was packed and short stocked on some items. I'm sure having a snow storm right after that is a double whammy.
