Toledoans and Affordable Higher Education

Will your kid go on to some kind of education beyond high school? Can you afford it right now? I did some checking, and found that the University of Toledo, http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/collegecost/collegecost.jsp?college_id=9432 , comes to $6,816 with an additional $1,111 in fees (if you can get the kid to sleep in his/her room). UTMC does have a program, http://toledotalk.com/cgi-bin/tt.pl/article/46049/Stay_in_school_get_10k_for_college, that allows up to $10,000 to be put aside toward education.

So does it look like you can put your kid through UT (or a cheaper university) if we continue to see this economy? I saw where the Miami University at Hamilton is even cheaper than Toledo, http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/collegecost/collegecost.jsp?college_id=7443. Is our local economy making it too expensive for Toledoans to pursue higher education? Where will the solar industry gets its engineers from? Toledo or places where the kids can afford college?

My kid's college education as of right now is totally paid for. Their great-grandma is leaving all five of them money for that purpose.

All you can do is keep saving. Besides, I pay more than that for my kindergartner and pre-schooler. It’s an investment and well worth it.

I actually agree with you Sensor. Even 50 bucks a week over a number of years will add up. It may not be enough to totally pay for college but it can lessen the student loan burden, or you pray for a scholarship.

If my math is correct 50 bucks a week would be 200 a month, that's $2,400 a year. The sooner you start save though the better.

I have a niece who wants to go to a school in Michigan that costs $20,000 a year. I doubt her parents can afford it, and I cannot afford it. It looks like UT for her.

Yes, my children will have the money to attend college.

My parents have already set aside more than enough funding for their 5 grandchildren to attend college. And I suspect that my husband's grandparents have money earmarked for that purpose as well.

In addition, I'm saving money on my own as well. Ideally, I'd hope to be able to assist them if they choose to go to graduate or professional school beyond a Bachelor's degree. (Or, if necessary, the money can be used to supplement the family funds for a Bachelor's degree. Though there should be more than sufficient funds set aside for that already, even taking inflation into account.)

As someone who turned 32 this week and makes a better than average living I don't know if I'll be able to afford it if I'm blessed to have kids. Truth is I may still be paying my own student loans when they go to college at this point.

No disrespect to other posters but noticing a little trend in grandparents having set aside enough money for their kids. While that is absolutely wonderful, for my generation and younger it's going to be REALLY rough. All I know is that I hope to break this student loan debt trend, and do everything in my power so my kids someday can get a good education w/o leaving school with a lifelong amount of debt on their shoulders like I have now.

INeedCoffee,

I guess I was fortunate because my grandparents put me through a year of school and would have continued to pay if I went. It just wasn't for me at the time, so I went back to work in construction.

Now 14 years later I'm back in school, and I graduate with my associates in business in May, then go right back for my bachelors in accounting.

My wife and I also have been putting away money for the kids. My oldest has quite a bit from us for his college education, plus what his great grandma has set aside for him. It's possible, so don't give up.

In Toledo OHio - I am settled for a 2 yar degree. This isnt a major market such as Chicago, New York, LA, or even Dayton Ohio. The costs of a 4 year degree in toledo verses the return in the Toledo market is jack.

Honestly, the costs of an education at UT are on par to buying a house. My stepkids, are going to have to take out loans - just like I did. The costs are far too much for this average middle class family to pay for.
