The City Council members will be deciding to vote on who will be running Collins Park, Ottawa Park, and Detwiler on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 and the Blade printed an article on Tuesday, March 9th that they are leaning towards Greg Fish from South Toledo Golf Club. Anyone else out there thinking that might not be the wisest choice?
Greg Fish running 4 golf courses in Toledo?
Comments ... #
I think there has got to be a better choice than him!
He is the owner of South Toledo Golf Club on Heatherdowns. At the last city council meeting, they said he had financial problems. If he can't run one golf course how will he run 4!
Carty's son-in-law a better choice?

This is just my $.02 worth...word I got was the company that was running the 3 city owned parks only wanted to run Ottawa Park and Detweiler but not Collins. The company that owns Bay View said they were willing to take over Collins and let the old company run the other two. The city said no (shocker). I would rather see Collins closed. There are already too many courses around this area to survive and the weakest need to go - I would say Tamaron is another one. I have a feeling the prices at all 3 will go up if this company comes in and play will decline. I really like Detweiler and Ottawa but this won't be good. If what I heard was true, the city screwed the pooch (again). I honestly haven't played South Toledo in years, so I can't tell you how it is. I have played across the street and I must say that place has fallen apart.

Fish comes with a strong recommendation from Bell. But I agree with zgirl that if Fish has had fiancial problems in his past, why would council take such a risk with him when the city's budget is in ruins? Can't Bell and council make a sound financial decision to save their lives? The Blade article said there were other local firms that bid, but lost out to Fish. If these other firms don't have money problems, and they have experience, then council should pick one of them.
$48mil budget deficit and the City of Toledo owns golf courses? Sell 'em.

At yesterday's city council meeting, they said Greg Fish owes back taxes to the city of Toledo. If he can't pay back taxes, then how is he going to pay $246K a year to the city to run the courses. And Kudos to the city of Toledo for not asking to see the letter of credit from all managment groups. Suprised that the VP of the local bank (that was on the 7 panel committee) to decide who runs the courses did not bring this up. I want to bank with them, to get a loan for my next house!
avinsurer - I can't find the article, is Collins Park losing money?

Good Grief! Anyone who hasn't paid their taxes should be disqaulified from bidding on, or getting, a city contract.

Fish, owner of South Toledo Golf Club, is behind in his taxes, according to AREIS, which shows he owes $48,278.26 in taxes for the first half, and $71,139.30 for the second half of last year. Maybe if the other firms who bid were behind on their taxes, they might have been able to bid higher and be more competitive. Hope council gives the lease to someone else.
And welcome to the board, zgirl!
That is a lot of back taxes to owe the city, the city needs to collect the $119,417.56 from Greg Fish from last year before they hold their breath and wait for the $246K to come rolling in for this year! All the city sees is the "promised dollars" they should collect the money from someone who actually pays. There are 4 other management companies that put bids in according to the city council members during the meeting last week, choose one of them!
Maybe we should make it a directive that someone who owes taxes or fines to the city cannot bid on city offerings. Though that might be too difficult for the city's financial software and people to manage.

Most City of Toledo bid packages include the typical affadavits, declarations, and tax related forms. If the taxes are owed, I have no idea how this company got this far and is even in consideration. The only answer nust be a lack of applicants.
I am surprised he would want to run the golf courses with the City after losing all of those battles to keep his dome up year long.
I just saw a commercial that said Fish is running the city courses.
