Need advice - burger joints

have some young friends who we're getting a 'date night' for: Dinner and a movie. They say theyre not into fancy places to eat, so if any of you have an opinion on both places, where would you rather go in this genre - Red Robin, or that new 5 Guys place??

Personally Red Robin is WAY too noisy for me, but then again - Im old, and I know an awful lot of young folks who like the place. Never been to 5 guys at all...

5 Guys has really good burgers and fries. They post, daily, where the potatoes for the fries come from and they're never frozen...I think they double fry them which gives them a really nice crunch while preserving the flavor.

I would recommend it, especially if they've never been before.

...and as it happens, I need to do to Costco in my errands today! Thanks!

Dale's Bar and Grille on Conant is the way to go. Great burgers, chili and fries and the big movie theaters are a quick drive as well.

I like 5 guys, but I'm not sure they are worth waiting in line for and hoping/fighting for a table once you get your food.

Afreed with SensorG that you have to east at 5 Guys during the off-peak times so as not to get elbowed. Also, do not sit at the tables near the pop machine, because that area gets really congested and you will be annoyed with all the people staring at your food or making interruptive conversation while you are trying to eat.

I'll second Dale's. Not sure why a burger cooked in a closet sized kitchen on a flat-top is consistently so good, but they always seem to make the grade. In addition, you have four theaters within 5-10 minutes (Maumee, Falen Timbers, Levis, and Maumee Cinemas)

Totally agree with the comments about Five Guys..I've been there about 3 times, love the food, but hate the chaos and congestion of that many people in such a small space. Never had Dale's but it is now on my agenda. Also, my two cents.. Bergers on Laskey Rd has a great burger.

Mmmm...Bergers!! Kind of a dive, but excellent burgers. I haven't been there in 10 years or more (probably reflects the fact that I spend so little time in bars these days).

Dale's does have good burgers, but we've had bad service experience there at least 3 times. We used to try to go to lunch there at work, and the service was so bad we just stopped.

Bar Louie in Levis Commons has really good burgers too, and it is not that fancy. Slightly more upscale than Red Robin.

Just ate at 5 guys! Awesome burger. Then I went over to Red Robin and got my gift cert, for the reasons Sensor said. Dales is great, but the movie tickets I got to go with the gift cert were for franklin park mall, so we wanted to be around there. Bar Louie? real people dont go there unless it's to laugh at the posers...

5 Guys burgers are so good. First at at one in Chicago and loved it. Now I'm hungry...

I miss the original Koral Hamburg on River Road. Fun times with my dad.

There's still a Koral Hamburg in Waterville. http://enjoyingtoledo.com/2008/11/koral-hamburg/

Happy Hour (its a bar) on Eleanor.

Seriously.

Last time my hubby and i ate at Koral, he was puking before he even got to the car. Way too greasy. Max and Ermas is a chain but the one at Levis has pretty good burgers and there sirloin steak is actually VERY good.

"Bar Louie? real people dont go there unless it's to laugh at the posers..."

lol, yea it certainly isn't as legit as Red Robin. hahahaha

God, is Happy Hour still around? I grew up just two blocks from there. I haven't tried 5 Guys myself yet but the rave reviews have placed it on my agenda.

Another vote for Happy hour, have not been in that dive for years. Cheap beer and great burgers.

Happy Hour for sure! Still a dive, but still a great burger and still cheap beer!!

Went to Bergers over the weekend and that was good. They used to allow smoking in there even after the ban, but they must have stopped that. Many people went out front to smoke

Lil Sheba's on Alexis ya mean Upso - across from GM...

Another vote for Five Guys. A bit pricey but great quality and loved the atmosphere.

We go to Quimby's in Lambertville, MI all the time. It's in the Kroger plaza on Secor and Sterns, I believe. I get the BBQ burger with BBQ, Onion Rings, Cheddar Cheese, and Cream Cheese with Sweet Potato Fries! Mmmmm...

Always have seen quimbys but never been in - basic sports bar inside?

posted by billy on May 10, 2010 at 01:29:50 pm     #

I like Quimby's. I think its a little nicer than a basic sports bar. "Nice casual" as opposed to "nice fancy," if that makes any sense. lol

Actually, I don't even think there's a big screen visible from most of the main dining area (at least not last time I was there), so I don't think you can really classify that as basic sports bar. Though there is the back half that is more bar oriented. I think all the bigger screens are right at/around the bar area.

P.S. I second the vote on Berger's as well. Never would have even noticed the place if a friend of my husband's hadn't told him. Don't know why it is, but some of those hole-in-the-walls end up having the best burgers.

Bergers is good, always seem to forget about that lil dive

Nick and Jimmy's has the best burgers in that area, and a much more relaxed atmosphere (no clowns, screaming kids, and you are guaranteed to get a table)

posted by Fryer on May 11, 2010 at 09:13:26 am     #

Have you been to the one in Temperance? is it like the one on Monroe?

also, how do they guarantee you a table??

posted by billy on May 11, 2010 at 09:16:46 am     #

Well, I just mean that compared to Five Guys, there are plenty of places to sit inside. So you will most likely get a table (though nothing is a guarantee). I have not eaten at the one in Temperance, so i am not sure if the burgers are as good up there.

posted by Fryer on May 11, 2010 at 09:21:35 am     #

understood - while I thought the burger I got at 5 guys was great, I dont think I'd ever eat there. Much more of a grab and go kinda place IMO.

The Brownstone Tavern on Alexis near Lewis also cooks a pretty good burger. Lived in the point for 23 years and FINALLY tried it last Thursday on a co-worker's long standing recommendation. Good burger.

In fact, everything I saw coming out of the kitchen looked good. Also, it definitely is not a fancy place.

Place was packed.

Brownstone has great food, took the wife there on Friday night. A fantastic 12oz Prime Rib with a salad and potato for 13.99.
