Express yourself...music that moves you

Post some of your favorite music, from rock to jazz to disco to all points in between. I just get mine free off YouTube, although not everything available there. I pay scant attention to the videos; I'm only in it for the sounds. I'll start with a few of my own:

Nice list Walter, but I kinda gave up the "metal scene" after the Metallica Reload album. You might like Metalocalypse (1st album, second sucked).

Now I pretty much stick with 92.5 and NPR.

Great stuff, all.

'What's Goin On' may indeed be best song ever, Ace.

Love Santana and 'Jingo', KraZy. Radiohead terrific group.

Interesting list, Prairie. Gave a listen to all.

A sampling of songs from my iTunes "Recently Played" folder; I often use the iPod Shuffle feature to get a wider variety of music I might overlook from my 9,000-song collection:

  • "Pink Moon," Nick Drake
  • "Tightrope," Electric Light Orchestra
  • "Knights of Cydonia," Muse
  • "Where Evil Grows," The Poppy Family
  • "Glass Onion," The Beatles
  • "Down by the Water," PJ Harvey
  • " Oh Babe, What Would You Say," Norman "Hurricane" Smith
  • "Five O'Clock World," The Vogues
  • "Girlfriend in a Coma," The Smiths
  • "Bem, Bem MAria," The Gipsy Kings
  • "Fall on Me," R.E.M.

From JohnnyMac: Here is a terrific tune for Toledoans

Reminds me of that murder at the Red Lobster in Toledo. The manager was found at room temperature by the morning shift, and every employee there said that if they knew who did it, they'd pin a medal on the guy.

posted by madjack on May 24, 2010 at 04:01:08 pm     #

And, by the way McCaskey, this was a good idea.

I'm usually able to give people a lot of leeway with the music they like, but those are awful. Sounds like modern day C+C Music Factory. Here's some real music for the dancefloor:

"Lateralus" by Tool and a bit of Fibonacci. One of my favorite videos. Music, math, space, philosophy.

@Ace_Face: Awww... you're crazy. Dance pop is HOT. Don't get me wrong I'm all about the LL but that stuff is kinda dated. Think I picked up that single back in '91 was it?

This is my summer 2010 anthem.

Some others amongst my favorites...

A couple more Carbon Leaf cuts. The fan made videos are quite well done too.

Another Great Big Sea, this time along with the Chieftains, legends in the Celt music world.

The Tragically Hip, kind of a Canadian R.E.M.

Closing out with another from punk icon Joe Strummer, the future is unwritten.

You go to any club in the world and put on your little "Night at the Roxbury" tunes and then put on LLCoolJ and tell me which goes down better with the crowd.

Here's my summer anthem:

Dizzee Rascal... good stuff.

@Ace_Face: Night At The Roxbury!? You're killing me lol. That was 15 years ago. Go to clubs in Chicago and Miami and I guarantee old school rap is not the theme of the evening.

posted by mixman on May 26, 2010 at 06:40:05 pm     #

The fist pumping guidos in Florida may be into that stuff, but every club I've been to in Chicago tends to lean toward house and trance. My last word on the subject is that it is now almost 20 years since "Mama Said" came out and it still sounds great. Think anyone will dig out Mini Viva in 2030 and the dancefloor will fill with people saying "This is my jam!"? Me neither.

Here's one artist to keep your eye on, she's a combo of James Brown, Andre 3000 and Erykah Badu.
