Thanks. I just finished planting and mulching a 6000 sq ft (no typo 6000) sustainable landscape garden. Knowing I dont have to hand water good today is good news. There is no water at the site.

I logged on in hopes that you would update us with the weather. What do you think of Toledo's chance of these heavy downpours? When I looked online, it looked like it was breaking up or wearing down. Any opinions?

Weather Channel says 2 inches rain possible.

You could tie this thread in with the 'basement flooding program', lol (hopefully not).

Clearing is starting to work into NW OH. SPC has update the risk of some strong tornadoes just to the west but expecting these to form a couple complexes that will bring widespread damaging winds to the area late this evening/overnight.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0300 PM CDT SAT JUN 05 2010

VALID 052000Z - 061200Z

...THERE IS A MDT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF SE IA...NE

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF THE MID-MO
VALLEY...UPPER MIDWEST...OH VALLEY...SRN GREAT LAKES...CNTRL AND NRN
APPALACHIAN MTNS...MID-ATLANTIC AND NEW ENGLAND...

THE ONLY CHANGE TO THE OUTLOOK IS TO ADD A SIGNIFICANT TORNADO
PROBABILITY AREA FROM SE IA EWD ACROSS NCNTRL IL AND NRN IND WHERE
LOW-LEVEL SHEAR WILL RAPIDLY INCREASE LATE THIS AFTERNOON INTO THE
EVENING. A WELL-DEVELOPED 65 TO 80 KT MID-LEVEL JET WILL APPROACH
THE MODERATE RISK AREA WITH CONDITIONS BECOMING FAVORABLE FOR A
SIGNIFICANT SEVERE WEATHER LATE THIS AFTERNOON INTO THE EVENING
ACROSS THE OH VALLEY. THE CURRENT THINKING IS THAT A BOWING
LINE-SEGMENT WILL DEVELOP AND MOVE THE WRN PART OF THE MODERATE RISK
AREA LATE THIS AFTERNOON. THE LINE SHOULD BECOME PERSISTENT AND
WELL-DEVELOPED PRODUCING VERY STRONG WIND GUSTS. SOME CELLS AHEAD OF
THE LINE SHOULD REMAIN DISCRETE BECOMING SUPERCELLS. THE TORNADO
THREAT SHOULD BE GREATEST WITH BOWING SEGMENTS ALONG THE LINE AND
WITH SUPERCELLS AHEAD OF THE LINE. A THREAT FOR STRONG TORNADOES
SHOULD EXIST FROM LATE THIS AFTERNOON INTO THE EARLY AND MID EVENING
AS THE LOW-LEVEL JET BECOMES VERY FOCUSED.

Sooooo...will we still have the 3+ inches of rain in Toledo overnight? Now we can expect tornadoes?

posted by draven4099 on Jun 05, 2010 at 08:02:50 pm     #

The forecast for damaging storms and heavy rain was not just for Toledo. The flash flood watch includes a large area of the lower Great Lakes states. Wunderground's severe weather map currently shows some counties in the watch area in eastern Ohio currently under a flash flood warning. Slow-moving strong storms with heavy rain moved west to east through north central Ohio today.

A tornado and .75 to 1.25 inch hail were reported in the Mansfield area. A tornado and 1.0 to 1.75 inch hail were reported in Holmes County. The storm reports map shows several counties in central and eastern Ohio reporting one or more of the following: tornado, funnel cloud, storm damage, flash flooding, and large hail.

And if it's any consolation, a short time ago, tornado warnings were issued for areas just west of Toledo.

Tornado Warning for...
southeastern Steuben County in Northeast Indiana...
southeastern Hillsdale County in Southeast Michigan...
northwestern Fulton County in Northwest Ohio...
northern Williams County in Northwest Ohio...

at 953 PM EDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated a
severe thunderstorm with strong rotation. 4 miles northwest of
Edon... or 10 miles east of Angola... and moving east at 40 mph.

Also: A Tornado Warning remains in effect until 1030 PM EDT for
southeastern Williams... northeastern Defiance and northwestern Henry
counties...

At 959 PM EDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar continued to
indicate a severe thunderstorm with strong rotation. This severe
storm was located over north central Defiance County... or about 5
miles south of Bryan... and moving east northeast at 25 mph.

The above storm report, or the only info on hand at the moment, says a house with structural damage near Delta. That's different from several houses leveled. Will have to wait for version 2.0 of the info.

A brief period of mod-hvy rain here in West Toledo at 11:26 p.m. Lights are dimming a lot. Probably some power issues in the area.

The text for when Lucas Co officially went to a tornado warning came through at 10:55 pm - not too bad, considering the National Weather Service called it at 10:53.

Unfortunately the area doesn't have the chaser rich environment to push reports in fast. Also Cleveland will probably be slow on getting much out (horrible weather office).

Latest update...NW Ohio is good for now. The main area for NW Ohio to watch out for is in Southern Michigan now in Cass/St. Joseph Counties. Wind profile does seem to be trending away from a tornado threat. There is one area of stronger rotation in the mentioned area, but it has been trending down fast. These are moving to the ESE right now.

There is another tornado warned storm in Starke Co, IN. Its moving ESE as well.

For second line of storms, the tornado warning was issued at 2:26 a.m. for Lucas Conty, and the sirens sounded in Lucas County at 2:46 a.m. Even though it seems Lucas County fared well with the second line of storms, a 20-minute delay is unacceptable, especially around 2:30 a.m. The so-called system failure needs investigated. Amateur radio operators called the Lucas County sheriff's office to find out why the sirens did not sound, and soon after, the sirens sounded. Seems too coincidental.

For the first line of storms, sirens in Lucas County began sounding at 10:31 p.m. even though no tornado warning had been issued for Lucas County. Was that a "heads up" siren blast because of the warnings for Fulton County? What's the protocol for sounding the sirens? Whenever the sheriff wants. I thought it was when the county or parts of the county were under a tornado warning.

For the first line of storms, a tornado warning was issued for Lucas County at 10:53 p.m. The sirens did sound again for Lucas County, but I don't know when exactly, except it was soon after the warning was issued.

posted by jr on Jun 06, 2010 at 09:18:07 am     #

Siren policy can vary from county to county. It also depends on the siren system in place. Here we have the sirens setup on separate grids that allow only the warned portions of a city to have the audible alarm. Sirens are also used in cases when severe storms are moving into an area where there are several lakes to warn those out camping/boating - the main purpose of the sirens, warning those outside.

I would say taking an initiative and doing an advanced warning is a good thing when you have the ability. Especially when dealing with an idea where you have 3 different NWS forecast offices covering the same metro area. The other part is that you don't have the saturation of spotters/chasers who are able to watch things all the way through like you see in other areas. So the lack of continuous "ground truth" reporting also means you have to gamble a bit to provide an advanced warning.

posted by JustaSooner on Jun 06, 2010 at 10:05:24 am     #

I agree that there needs to be an investigation into why the sirens sounded 20 minutes later in the second wave of storms. We will see what happens. Maybe 13ABC can do an investigative report!

Will be making some changes to http://www.anvilcrawlers.com/ . Instead of focusing solely on the southern Plains, will be adding information for the Lower Great Lakes over the next few days. The front page currently includes a live chat & live twitter feed from area agencies, news outlets, and the NWS. One thing that I have noticed is nearly none of the area emergency operation centers, skywarn groups, and other local agencies have any twitter feeds going. I guess we are spoiled down here with the vast wealth of information that gets transmitted from these groups to the public.

There were sirens heard twice in the Old West End. I think the first one was around 9-something. That's when the sky really opened up and we had a good downpour of rain. Everyone was outside at different parties for festival weekend. We were on our bikes at a party a few blocks from home.

Then the rain subsided a bit and we rode to another party. When the sirens went off a second time the rain came down even harder... we knew it was time to get home and ran with our bikes through the rain to our porch safely.

I was in bed a little while after that and didn't hear another siren, if there was one.

I was at Magee Marsh/Crane Creek this morning. Some structural debris could be seen along Route 2 east of N. Curtice Rd. Some decent-sized pieces of twisted metal were in some of the fields along Route 2. On the road and parking lots at Magee Marsh, I found pieces of roofing shingles, small pieces of metal, aluminum siding, splintered boards with nails, and some kind of housing material with yellowish, insulation-like material on one side and patchy black tar on the other side. No structural damage occurred in those immediate areas. I'm guessing it's deposited material that was carried for several miles from northern Wood County or western Ottawa County.

June 6, 2010 Toledo Blade story

Tornado touchdowns were confirmed for 11:30 p.m. Saturday in Wood County's Lake Township. Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn said the five confirmed deaths were related to what was an 8-mile path of destruction in his county and neighboring Ottawa County. Three of the deaths happened in Millbury.

Mark or someone from Lake Township was interviewed on the Weather Channel. The tornado path was 100 yards wide. In Lake Township, 50 homes were destroyed and 50 more were damaged.

Also from the Blade:

Oak Openings Preserve Metropark in western Lucas County is closed until further notice because of hundreds of downed trees from the overnight severe weather. Damage to other Metroparks is still being assessed, park officials said Sunday morning.

There was a swath that the Tornado took through oak openings. It ranges 100 yards to maybe as much as 200 yards wide and takes pretty much a straight shot through the park. draw a line from just south of the Lodge on Reed and Wilkins and go west through where the horse barn is on Jeffers and beyond. No idea how far past the lodge heading east it goes. the tree loss is very substantial in that path as it was through Fulton County.

Another post to the Toledo Naturalists message board about Oak Openings Metropark.

The damage in the Oaks is pretty amazing. No loss of life or buildings. The neighbors in the Oak River subdivision took a direct hit. PLEASE OBSERVE ALL THE CLOSED POSTINGS! There are dozens of "widow makers" all over. These are trees and limbs that are hung up and precarious.

The most heavily damaged area was over old Wilkins Road, behind the Lodge. The damage seems to begin in the State Forest area on Manore Road across to Jeffers, into the park to the Lodge, then on to Oak River Lane.

Crews worked over time in the park today, and neighbors and friends helped out on O.R. Lane. You all can help by staying out of the closed areas until the staff gives the all clear.

Another reason why I like Wunderground.com. They display the annoying all-caps NWS messages in normal type. The NWS's all uppercase style must be a holdover from the old teletype days. The death toll was reduced to five by mid-afternoon on Monday, yet the NWS statement on Monday night still says seven. Did something change? Anyway, a readable version of the latest NWS info about the Wood County tornado:

I drove by Moline the other day and was stunned by the damage I saw. Looks like a war zone. My heart goes out to the families who are suffering from the loss of a loved one, who have been injured, and/or lost their possessions.

June 5, 2010 Wood County tornado claims sixth victim.

Ryan Walters of Millbury, Ohio, died at 6:14 p.m. Sunday at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, a hospital spokesman said.

Mr. Walters and his wife, Mary, apparently were asleep in an upstairs bedroom of their house when the tornado struck, as were their children, daughter Madison, 7, and son Hayden, 4, according to family members.

The only member of that foursome to survive the incident was the young girl, who was released from Mercy St. Vincent after days of treatment for broken bones. Mrs. Walters and the couple's son died shortly after the tornado struck.
