Can anyone recommend a good back specialist?

I am experiencing low back pain that I believe is also causing leg pain and weakness.
I would like to consult with a good medical doctor who specializes in back problems for treatment options. Has anyone out there received effective treatment (or know of someone who has)from a local MD that they would recommend?

Sounds like you have the same symptoms that I had when I was dealing with Sciatica. A few trips to the chiropractor usually fixed me right up whenever it bothered me.

if you want to try a great chiropractor, try Dr. Kott at Holland Chiropractic on McCord just south of angola across ths street from the fire station. if your insurance don't cover it he gives a really good cash discount.

Can't recommend anyone, but I've had a compressed sciatic twice, and man are they painful. Last time I missed a day of work cause I literally couldn't get out of bed or bend my leg so I know where you're coming from.

However, after a day I was able to stretch it out enough to get to a doctor. Try standing up, putting the leg that's having a problem (guessing right) in front of you a little, tipping your foot upward and lean your back back, almost making a > shape. This helps stretch the muscle.

That's what the doc told me, some anti inflammatory, and some pain killers to deal with it till the muscle could relax helped. Think it took about 2 weeks (1 before I was decent again).

Don't know of any anti-inflammatory that are over the counter but check with your local pharmacist.

Hope that helps.

correction, lean back forward rather.

Forgot to add he also put me on a slight steroid, cause I had let it go for about a month and since I was favoring the leg so much it weakened the muscle, causing the problem to get worse.

Again hope this helps and good luck :)

I would definitely have to recommend Dr. Connie Smith.....wow is she amazing! Yes she is a chiropractor and not a "back specialist", but she has helped myself, and 2 other people in my office, and we all go see her at least once a month to get aligned! Amazing!!

Both Dr. Kott and Dr. Schliesser at Holland Chiropractic on McCord are wonderful. We appreciate the cash discount, too. A very helpful pain relief experience, and you don't need to worry that they'll try to talk you into expensive treatments just to make a buck.

I too have heard really good things about Connie Smith...my best friend raves about her. If you would reach a point that you would need surgery I personally recomend Dr Tom Andershak. He is an orthopedic surgeon and does mostly just spinal surgery. I would NOT recommend a Neurosurgeon esp the group at St V's.

OK, here goes..I was treated, successfully, by a local chiropractor for many years, and most of that was paid out of pocket. I've not been back in over 3 years and I attribute it to using an inversion table. All I'm saying is that it works for me. Most recently I've also taken a gentle yoga class that has helped my overall posture and flexibility. Good luck with whomever you choose or whatever method you may try.

MI, where'd you get the table? I have always thought I should make room in the house (or in my lifestyle) for something like that. I want my superpower to be "able to reverse the effects of gravity at any age"! ;-)

I just started going to Connie Smith based on a referral from a friend. I also have sciatic issues and she is terrific. She explains the causes and treatment options in layman's terms. I'd recommend her to anyone.

Well, I was and have been lucky enough to "store" said unit in my house from a friend who no longer needed it and had precious little space. The unit is around the $200.00 range. I have seen and do not believe that some of the tables are worth more than that. They only do one thing!! Try some out, and I'll get back to you on the exact brand that I have. I moved it yesterday to a new location where I'll be residing.

I visited Connie Smith's partner, Tim Trax a few years ago for some chronic degenerative issues and he did wonders for me. Highly recommended.
