Web Site To-Do List

August 2010 Now January 2011

Things to add and/or change to ToledoTalk.com

Forums

Added in the summer of 2009 but not enabled for general use.

Forum list: http://toledotalk.com/cgi-bin/tt.pl/forums

Some threads have been assigned to a forum by the admin account.

Allow users to assign thread to forum - Done

As of August 9, 2010, users are not yet permitted to assign a thread to a forum.
Update September 2010: users can assign a thread to a forum after it has been created if they so chose. It's not mandatory.

Assign 2010 threads to forums - Done

  • Assign the 2010 threads to a forum. That way when the forum list is made available to users, some threads will appear in each forum. And users will be required to assign new threads to a forum. Then the admin account will go through the previous years' threads and assign them to a forum.
    • 2010 thread months assigned to a forum:
      • January
      • February
      • March
      • April
      • May
      • June
      • July
      • August
      • September
      • October
      • November
      • December

Move thread from one forum to another - Done

As of August 9, 2010, it's possible to assign a thread to a forum, but it's not possible to move a thread from one forum to another. Enable this move ability for the admin account. This same forum edit feature will eventually be made available for users who create their own threads.

Update October 13, 2010: now able to move a thread from one forum to another.

Merge modules - Done

Currently have two modules to create the front page view. One is RecentActivity, which is the module used to create the current front page. The other is MessageBoard, which is used in conjunction with the forum list. Make changes to settle on one module and its corresponding templates. Maybe three modules exist because a vertical forum view is also available at http://toledotalk.com/cgi-bin/tt.pl/forum/0/all

October 13, 2010: moved the vertical message board view from the Forums module into the MessageBoard module, which also contains the horizontal message board view. Will soon remove the RecentActivity module, since it will no longer be needed.

Update October 16, 2010: switched to using MessageBoard module for default front page view. RecentActivity module obsolete. Both the vertical and horizontal message board views come from the MessageBoard module. The vertical display also now shows the forum name for a thread.

Enable MB next-previous links - Done

  • If using MessageBoard module, enable the "next" and "previous" links.
    • Fixed on October 13, 2010

Update counters when moving thread to another forum - Done

  • When moving a thread to another forum, update the forum info for the old and new forums for topic count, reply count, last post date, and last post author.
    • Fixed on October 13, 2010

Update counters when deleting and undeleting a thread in a forum

  • When deleting and undeleting a thread and comment, update the forum info as listed above.

Fix Politics forum bug when thread is edited - Done

  • As of August 2010, when a thread is assigned to the politics forum, that thread is automatically set to be hidden from the front page. But when a user edits a politics thread, the new version does not get assigned to be hidden from the front page. Add code to the update article procedure to check the forum id, and if politics, set hidden from front page.
    • Fixed on October 7, 2010

User Profile Page

  • Display link to the user's "liked" comments

Help Page

Formatting Buttons

  • Make the bold, italicize, and link formatting buttons work for new thread posts and when previewing a comment.

Sidebar - Done

  • Shrink the horizontal width of the front page sidebar by 25 to 50 pixels, so that it's not so big relatively-wise on a mobile device. Update: implemented in January 2011
  • Test removal of the login form from the sidebar and provide users with only the "login" link in the navbar??? This would shrink the vertical length of the sidebar for users not logged in. Trying to shrink the sidebar as much as possible for mobile device users. Will hold off for now implementing this

Navbar - Done

  • Test removal of the navbar by placing those links in the vacant space in the header. The site title, the search box, and the navbar links would all be in the header area. Navbar goes away. Update: implemented on January 16, 2011

Header - Done

  • Test removal of the search text field and search button from the header and provide users with only the "search" link that would be moved to the header area. Update: implemented on January 16, 2011

Comments

  • Add the "quote" feature to each comment, so users can respond to a comment by creating a comment that includes the other user's comment.
This is the text in comment id 12345.
q=12345.
This is the text in comment id 12345.
    q..

RSS

  • Create RSS feed for Kindle.

Table of Contents

  • Display table of contents, if desired, during the preview of a post.

Microblog

  • Search:
    • remove microblog postings from main search results
    • add microblog-only search to the microblog page.

Blog

  • Enable "next" and "previous" page links for the blog display.

Namespaces

Enforce namespaces

  • Thread/article titles
    • When using <username>: at the start of the title for a post, only that user should be allowed to use his or her username at the start. Right now, any user can create a post with the title beginning with another user's username. it's not a username.
    • But a user can use other words followed by colon punctuation mark in the title as long as the word is not someone else's username.
  • User blog display posts
    • The special tag blog_<username> when accessed will display the results in blog style.
      • Working example for posts containing the tag blog_jr
    • Right now, anyone could create a post and use the tag blog_jr. Enable it so only the user can use his or her username with the blog_<username> special tag.

New Special Tag

Create a special "question" tag.

Within the thread starter post (or article), the use of
tag=question
will have special meaning.

Trying to copy some functionality from http://ask.metafilter.com

The creator of the thread that asks a question will be able to mark comments that he or she deems worthwhile. Add a "best" link at the end of the "posted by" line for a comment. Link only appears for the logged-in user who created the thread.

Those "best" comments will be displayed with a different background color within the thread. Highlight "best" comments with the old, gold navbar color as the comment's background color.

On the front page of the site that lists the threads, some kind of marker will be displayed next to thread, informing the reader that the question thread contains answers the thread owner believes to be "best" answers. Use a gold star.

Ask.metatfilter.com uses a green question mark next to the thread list on the front page:

When the mouse cursor is placed over the question mark, the following text is displayed: "this question contains answers marked as best"

Save Login

Correct the operation of the "save login" feature. It does not permit proper display of new comments and created/updated articles. Something is wrong with the way lastsessiondate and currentsessiondate are maintained when "save login" is checked when logging in.

Good and Bad comments

Logged in users can click the exclamation mark for a comment to flag the comment as defamatory. User can click the plus sign for a comment to save the comment to the user's liked list.

When a threshold is reached for the number of times a comment has been flagged as defamatory or liked enough, the background color for that comment changes to red or green respectively.

Add the following to the front page of the site that lists the threads: Show a red thumbs-down and/or a green thumbs-up by the thread title, indicating that the above thresholds have been met.
