Richie Rich Iott + Daddy's Cash = Privileged Out of Touch Life

While most of us worked to find a job to support our families Richie Rich was given a job by daddy Wally then fast tracked while other employees watched as he moved up by the pull of family. Then in the 1990s Richie cashed in the family chips to become a multimillionaire while his fellow employees were given pink slips. Now this man of privilege wants to be your congressmen he thinks that government should stay out of business and peoples lives. But what would Richie Rich do or feel if Big Daddy Iott wasn't there in his life showering him with privilege? A life of no pain christened to succeed with the blessing of his big daddy's wealth.

I'll be honest I thought JackRB supplied the facts pretty well in this informative article on a recent thread:
http://factcheck.org/2010/09/who-killed-food-town/
* It sounds like this was nothing more than a wise business decision.

wolfman, I respect your opinion but these clips are nothing more than typical wealth/business bashing to me. Comments like "daddy Wally" "Big Daddy" verify this attitude. Anti business/Anti Wealth... These attitudes and stereotypes will not bring jobs to our city. I wish Kaptur and the current administration understood this.

The year is 2010 - If I do not have a job skill or a degree I put my family at risk by not obtaining these, especially in this time of history. If I have a low skill job I need to go out and learn - even if this means missing American Idol or Monday Night Football. I have the good fortune to be in touch with many young people who attend the local Universities and always encourage them in their studies - more than ever it is extremely important to learn and be ready for change - quickly.

If the Spartan employees who lost their jobs were disgruntled I hope that they channeled that anger into learning a new endeavor and becoming more self sufficient through self employment or opening new businesses venture employing others as well.

Thank you wolfman for cleansing my soul on a sleepless evening -

After this poor economy bedazzled woman gets laid off - The article reads: "Stunned and depressed, she sent out resumes, but figured she had a little time to recover. So she took vacations to Turkey and Thailand with her husband." [GOOD THINKING]

Most of her days now are spent in front of a laptop, holed up in a lighthouse garret atop the house that her husband, Denny Mielock, built in the 1990s...[TIME=MONEY. IN OTHER WORDS WORK SOMEWHERE, ANYWHERE - GET OFF YOUR BUTT! GET AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER IF IT'S NOT HELPING YOU IN YOUR QUEST]

In four years of job hunting, Ms. Reid has discovered that she is no longer technologically proficient. In one of a handful of interviews she has secured, for an auditing position at the Port of Seattle, she learned that the job required skills in PeopleSoft, financial software she had never used. She assumes that deficiency cost her the job. [SEE ABOVE - I HOPE SHE HAS SPENT HER TIME IN THE LIGHTHOUSE LEARNING THIS SOFTWARE]

Although the couple do not have a mortgage on their 3,000-square-foot house [I RESPECT THAT THEY PAID THEIR HOUSE OFF BUT NOW TAKE ACTION - SELL THE 3,000 SQ FOOT HOUSE YOU CANT AFFORD AND LIVE WITHIN YOUR MEANS - MAYBE A LOW COST APARTMENT - NO PROPERTY TAX AND 1/3 THE UTILITIES - ACTION!]

Ms. Reid is in some ways luckier than others. Boeing paid her a six-month severance, and she has health care benefits that cover her and her husband for $40 a month." [I'LL REPEAT THAT - HER HEALTH CARE AND HER HUSBANDS COMBINED IS A SCANT $40 PER MONTH AND HER HOUSE IS PAID FOR. GET A JOB, ANY JOB. GET OFF YOUR BUTT, GET OFF THE TAX PAYERS DIME - WE SHOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU WHILE YOU SIT IN YOUR LIGHTHOUSE]

And she admits some regrets: she had a $180,000 balance in her 401(k) account, and paid $80,000 in penalties and taxes when she cashed it out early. She did not rein in her expenses right away. And now, her $500-a-week unemployment benefits have been exhausted. [HER PREVIOUS JOB WAS AN INTERNAL AUDITOR AND ANALYST AND THESE ARE THE DECISIONS SHE IS MAKING? SCRATCH EVERYTHING I WROTE EARLIER ABOUT THIS WOMAN FINDING A JOB - I WOULDN'T HIRE HER]

She recently signed up for a tax course at an H&R Block tax preparation office in Seattle. [OH MY GOD - NO!!!! - I WILL NOT LET THIS WOMAN COME NEAR MY TAX RETURN - SEE ABOVE PARAGRAPH - PLEASE, PLEASE EXTEND UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS NOW - WE CAN'T LET THIS WOMAN WORK!!!

With odd jobs and her husband's — albeit shriveled — earnings, she could stagger along. For now, she stitches together an income by gardening for neighbors, helping fellow church members with their computers, and participating in Internet surveys for as little as $5 apiece. [I RESPECT THIS PART OF HER STORY BUT SHE'S NOT GETTING NEAR MY AZALEAS!!!!]

Former rank-and-file employee Fran Oliver, a Food Town meat department worker from 1968 to 2003, said Mr. Iott should have known he was handing over the grocery and drugstore business to an owner that didn't have the same commitment to the stores that Food Town had.
"He knew all this was going to happen. If he didn't, he wasn't very smart," Ms. Oliver said. "Spartan and all of them were nuts for dumping a company like this."

Wolfman I understand and can agree with some of your angst but when does a person get separation from a private entity that they sold?

If we follow your logic... if you where to sell your home to a family and they started manufacturing meth in the bathroom of said home causing an explosion damaging the nearby homes should you be held liable because you didn't kick in the door and stop the meth production of your former residence? Should you have screened the potential buyers of the said home to make sure everything they do for the next 30 years is on the up and up?

I do not support Mr. Iott but Kaptur is a complete joke.

dbw8906 thank you for being civil here! I'm not use to posters that are actually looking for answers. I know where your going with the mommy state theme but from my neck of the woods most people aren't born with a silver spoon up their ass. Many a poster thinks that because they can't see the many breaks given them in life that somehow everyone is to make it in life without help. Many have had supportive families that either funded their education or placed them with employment contacts to give them an edge in life.
This country is now embarked on a path that most of the baby boomer generation has not experienced. All have had access to Government supported programs that either helped them directly or helped their family in one way or another. Now you are concerned about the ties that employees have to a previous owner. I understand your concern but the country cannot be run for the benefit of two percent of the population. Many are promoting education as the end all of this employment crisis. The country has about 25% with a college education. You and other believe that this is the future of employment but do not take in consideration many are not cut out for college. Its a elitist view that all could become doctors or engineers, just not feasible. My angst is the general lack of opportunity in the country as a whole. Our leaders have over the last decade and longer sold out the American people for the quick cash. They allowed no future planning for America, spending our wealth on dumb wars while our economic competitors ate our lunch. So your analogy of the meth lab in the bathroom could be looked at both economic ends for the top and from the bottom. This is why the communists of China are so successful. They have central planning and can force the country to make the tough decisions right or wrong. Yet our people want freedom to buy the communist products built from a slave economy that the workers here in this country could never compete with because of all the unfair trade restriction against the American worker.

Both parties have hindered the American worker, Repukes drafted NAFTA and Democratic Hero Billy Clinton signed into in to law and heralded it so just don't blame the Right.

Wolf you are promised NOTHING but Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. A lot of middle class people around here are VERY spoiled. I grew up in a part of the country where you didn't get 25 dollars an hour, a fully paid pension, and 6 weeks of paid time off (not counting your vacation) for screwing a bolt on a line. Take a road trip around this great country and see what the rest of the middle class is like and you would be surprised. The values of hard work and education where stressed by my parents because they didn't want to see me struggle like they had too as poor "immigrants from the South". There was no college fund for me, I worked 2 jobs while I went to school and at one point for a finite about of time lived in my car (due to poor choices by me), heck my wife and I paid for our entire wedding and honeymoon our of our own pocket. But I never gave up and kept working toward my goal.

I own a small business (I mean SMALL) and make just enough money to cover my expenses and pay the mortgage. If I where to grow my business but one day decied I wish to do something else and sell that business, how long should my family's assets be held liable for the new ownerships success? 1 year, 5 years, 10 years? Why would anyone start a business (you know to MAKE MONEY) if you would be infinity held liable AFTER you no longer own the business? I know a lot of people have all sorts of hate against mega corps when you tout all the new regulations to stop them you don't always understand that you also tie the hands of the small businessman who is just trying to get by but now suffers for your hate against Best Buy because you bought a TV that didn't work.

The general problem with your mindset is we gave up on the entrepreneurial spirit along time ago. This county was built by small business, not mega corps. I hated working for someone else, instead of bitching about it and "blaming the man" it took a risk and started my own company. You scream about silver spoons but honestly you sound like someone should just be able to show up at McDonalds and get life on a silver platter. Wolf life is HARD, I wish it wasn't that way all the time but through out history fortune favors the bold and those willing to take risk. If you wish for "just enough" that is what you will get. I'm sorry for the rant but small business people are tired of taking lumps for the Enrons of the world and their mistakes. Every penalty you put on big bad business really hammers us little guys (you know the ones who employ 90% of the country).

We now look at China as the golden goose but if you wish to live life under a China like system where the government limits the amount of children you may have, forces military service, conducts rolling blackouts, murders protesters in the streets, sets the level of pay you can make feel free, I'll pass.

Grant you I'm no fan of Bill Clinton. Right now the traitor is going around the country giving some revisionist views of his past performance. Bullshit! The problem you describe about our standard of living around the country has been dashed for most workers. Working towards your goal? Tell that to all those that went along with the conversion of the country to a 401K retirement. Most people lost a big chunk of that retirement goal when the banks and their greed manipulated the deregulated system affecting middle class America. To think they want to privatize Social security. Regulation? I say lack of regulation hurt you more with Wall Street and Banksters ruining the economy affected your small business. Look at BP oil in the gulf ruining the southern economy or the latest egg fiasco. No what has happened over the last three decades is not the overregulation of the economy but the adoption of the Republican Free Trade Free Enterprise goals that went unchecked. I've been a long time critic of NAFTA. Back in 1993 I attended Ross Perot rallies realizing the threat to our economy. Well the sucking sound is loud and clear. Middle class America is the loser here with what we have as a result, twin deficits. Before we were the producers of the world now were a Banana Republic stuck with a IV of cash from China. China is growing at 10% per year, we at 1.6%. China controls everything regulates everything yet their economy is booming. They target industry after industry with government cash to steal work from other countries. They manipulate their currency to undercut our wages and standard of living. Yet no one acts to work in our best interests. This is the new reality not the broken ideas of the past three decades.

I worked as a union auto worker for over 35 years. The pay was great the work was very hard and demanding more so than what most could ever imagine. I chose this life it paid for my home, my kids college, my health care, and my meager retirement. No regrets! Today our leaders have led the country to the abyss by listening to the Republican goals of unregulated Free Trade and Free Enterprise. I'm sorry if you think education is the answer to all our problems. I believe it is a general lack of opportunity for all workers. Opportunity that was shipped overseas to meet the greed of our 2%.

Wolf you missed my point... If you choose to work for someone you are labored with what they are going to pay you. If you wish to have more or more control over your life or your finances than take control and strike out on your own. If you continue to goto your 9-5 everyday and punch the clock, you will only get what you have negotiated.

Would you pay 15 dollars for a bag of oranges, how about 200 dollars for an oil change? If you wish to give everyone your unsustainable UAW benefit package than cost will rise and inflation would go through the roof! The farmer would now be part of the farm union so his cost would go up, the driver who hauls his cattle would now need a pay raise and fully paid pension, then the worker at the bottling company needs free healthcare, ect... Talk about driving business overseas.

Unskilled labor is what it is, unskilled labor. No an MBA is not for everyone, but the world still needs plumbers, electrician, drafters and all sorts of blue collar workers. Being White Collar does not make you smarter or a better America. But being born and able to lift heavy objects does not entitle one to a free pension.

BTW I would love to have control over my Social security funds, because if for one second you think it will be there in 30 years if govt. keeps spending like it does by fighting BS wars (Iraq, Afghanistan, The War on Drugs), funding broken entitlement programs, sending money over 40 million to Kenya to help them re-write their constitution and paying for research on teaching them to wash their genitals, and buying 3rd world countries GE ranges, you have to be reading different data than I am.

What is political experience? If it has anything to do with the way politicians act then who would want it? By design, politicians in this country were supposed to be businessmen and other actual members of the working population. Once there is a political class or career politicians then you invite corruption. A politician was to serve his or her time in office then return to their life. That's the reason for all the vacations they get. It's not because their job is all that hard, it's because they had a career and life back home and had to make it kept going while they were away serving their country. These people were valued for their insight into what was going on in the country. What do the politicians of today know about the people they represent?

What we're saying isn't anti-business, nor anti-wealth. It's ANTI-ASSHOLE.

Iott is an asshole. He cashed out a business (note: that's not actually RUNNING a business) to play with a pile of money. That's when he disconnected from we middle class (i.e. you and myself). That's when we could not sanely ally with him on anything of note. We should leave the "poor little rich kid" off to himself, since money is all he loves. He can use all that cash to buy friends and women, even business associates. But he cannot buy our respect, which he automatically lost when he threw thousands of employees to the dogs of capital.

You slaves have to learn that criticizing the rich is not envy, nor is it anti anything. It's criticizing the rich, and if they can't take the exposure of their past activities, then they should not seek public office.

All this is academic, of course. Iott has been seen sporting Nazi regalia, which most people abhor. An esoteric hobby, to be sure ... but esoteric just the same. Who here can afford to participate in such things?

Again, he failed to connect to the middle class. Why is this "disconnector" daring then to seek our votes? Because he thinks that we have no moral or class standards? The ego of his in this affair is monstrous. If this is what he thinks, then he's about to get schooled.

And in case anyone is wondering what my vote for the 9th District will be, I won't be clicking that icon on the voting machine, since:

1. Iott is a 'poor little rich kid' who has worked to destroy the middle class. His rhetoric about cutting taxes and spending is just that: Rhetoric. He just wants to get elected.

2. Kaptur is ... Kaptur. She's too much of a Democrat while that Congress of hers votes for more and more money each year. If she really cared for the working class that so brainlessly votes for her, she'd join the Libertarians in calling for a remarkably smaller government, to get off the backs of the workforce. Alas, she's probably our own district's form of Ted Kennedy, and will die in office, proving how sheeplike we are.

3. If Joe Jaffe is anything like what I knew him to be some years ago, then I might as well write in "Bozo the Clown" for an official form of the same joke representative.

GuestZero- the reports I have read, and there are a lot of them now, repeat the same thing; that Iott has done nothing wrong and your claims are baseless. I have not seen him attempt to buy anyone. And on another note- every have a hobby. People find ways to support a hobby no matter what it may be. You speak with a lot of passion but only directed at one person. Have you taken as critical a look at his opponent?

posted by Hawkeye on Oct 10, 2010 at 12:48:00 pm     #

Hawkeye - I ask the same of you. Have you taken a critical look at Iott? Or, are just so enamored of his rhetoric because it's what you want to hear, that you believe he has the character and intelligence to lead? He has neither. He has money, which he didn't really earn, and poor judgement in choosing a "hobby" if thinking about holding public office in the future. He's just another whacko Tea Party candidate who knows how to dupe the 'baggers' and they are ripe for duping.

posted by holland on Oct 10, 2010 at 01:50:25 pm     #

Hawkeye, what's your definition of wrong? Your incompleteness is intellectually dishonest.

Let me tell you mine. There's nothing legally wrong about cashing out a business and tossing thousands out of work. I said nothing about the legal wrongness of such an act, and wisely so.

But it's morally wrong to make a pile of money from human suffering. That's what Iott did.

And I must repeat: Iott couldn't have disconnected more from the general public with this WWII German re-enactment group if he had tried. Like I said, he wants our votes, but clearly has no connection to us. The League of Women Voters pamphlet shows him speaking of "reduction of taxes" and that "[f]ederal spending must be reduced dramatically". He's just playing to the Tea Party movement with rhetoric like that. I don't believe him. Once in office, he'd vote for war and vote for corporate welfare and vote to support the U.S. imperial machine.

And there's great reason not to believe what Iott says, since his entire campaign is based on a lie. He doesn't know how to create jobs (as if a government representative was ever in a position to do so, but I digress). In fact, he's practiced at destroying jobs.

If he had just come out and said something like this, you retarded monkey, then from the brutality of his honesty I might well have voted for him:

Yes, I cashed out Foodtown and as a predictable result, tossed thousands out of work. But that's capitalism and I had every legal right to cash out and take my money and do what I pleased with it.

Too bad you drank his kool-aid.

I was making comment on this threads topic after reading the mass amount of information out there on this. I guess I could say that what I mean by wrong is that I feel it is wrong to keep repeating things about someone long after they have been proven incorrect. From first hand reports of the people involved, he had nothing to do with the closing and the layoffs. You have since come after me without knowing anything about me. More proof that you need to be more thoughtful before exercising your freedom of speech. Sounds like you are too close minded to let the facts in and have to attack someone who questions your opinion. Same thing with Holland who demonstrates open-mindedness by repeating derogatory names.

Auto industry can't compete with unions
http://toledoblade.com/article/20081114/OPINION03/811140330
Presidential candidate Barack Obama denounced corporate bailouts with great indignation as helping out the "Fat Cats." He said corporations needed to be responsible for what they do. Now, the "Chosen One" is urging President Bush to move quickly to bail out the struggling American auto industry. Why the change of heart? It is spelled UAW. It is all about Mr. Obama's financial and constituent base; it has nothing to do with what is good for America.

Why shouldn't they be allowed to fail? They can never be competitive in the world market as long as they are saddled with wages and benefits that are nearly double those of their international competitors. They are burdened with supporting union retirement funds and medical plans that are over-inflated and noncompetitive. Failure would break the yoke of union domination. That would be the best thing that could happen to the American auto industry.

We do not "need" an "American" auto industry. It is a world market. Isolationism is gone forever. The Japanese, Germans, English - even the Koreans - are building cars equal to or better than ours. If the auto industry is given the chance to start over, it will if it can do it competitively. It will never be competitive while shackled by the UAW. I am certainly not a proponent of a "new world order," but studies show that countries that have significant trade relations generally do not get into wars with each other. The bigger the world market and the more trade interdependence that exists, the better it is for world relations. The concept of "Buy American" makes about as much sense as not buying Michigan products because you are an Ohio State fan.

Where is Mr. Obama taking us?

Hawkeye, you are a shill. The sale of FT was a direct cause of the layoffs and closings. As a shill, you're an Iott supporter, since why else would you be shilling?

I must repeat the facts: The sale of Foodtown was a direct cause of the closings and layoffs. That makes Iott a JOB DESTROYER, not a man who understands how to create jobs. He's lying to the public just to get elected. And you're trying (poorly) to help him achieve that deceitful goal.

What makes Rich Iott such a expert on anything? I mean really the man
has only one and one half years of College at Hillsdale. Why did he not
finish at Hillsdale? Must of been a real disappointment to his father.
I think those out there would have a better appreciation if he at least
finished college. You know the former w...orkers at FoodTown know that
none of them would have risen to run a business like FoodTown without a
college degree. I think they blame the failure by naivete or worst
outright incompetence for the loss of their jobs. Rich Iott has
accomplished in life what any privileged wealthy son always does. Not
by their own accord but by the connections of wealth. I think he lacks
a compassion for those less fortunate, a void of empathy that comes
from making ones own future.

When your family has money and you don't have to work your way through college AND STILL DON'T GO is a very big sign about work ethic.

If your family has money, and you don't have to work your way through college, why bother to go? Rush Limbaugh didn't bother with college either.

He was already involved in something pretty substantial. Not hanging around daddys store.
That comparison is as pathetic as Iotts grunting and tooting last night.
He be toast.
