New Capital Office 100 million

Saw this on the news briefly. If anyone has any more info would like to read it. This sounds horribly excessive for our town that is in so much debt. Granted it would be nice, but you don't buy a Mercedes if you can't afford to even buy a bicycle.

Curious to here the various sides of the story from people here.

Edit: After digging up the article it's for a proposed Courthouse not Capital Building.

I moved this to politics because the thread is ambiguous.

"Saw this on the news briefly."

INeedCoffee, what exactly did you see? You need to provide a bit more info about the news story in your posting. Did the news say someone is constructing a 100 million dollar capitol building in Toledo? If so, what news station or newspaper reported that?

Sorry about that, wasn't sure of the channel was either 11 or 13 news at 10 or 11. Anyway here is the only info I found online.

Looks like it's for a courthouse not Capital building.

Once again govt. will ask you to do more with less (higher taxes and fees) but don't you dare ask them to do the same. We want to make sure the elected elite and their buddies have really nice stuff while we wait in line for free gruel!

From I gathered, it is funded by the federal government. It's part of the 9/11 homeland security scare spending project. That's where the country spends a ton of money on things that can't really do anything about 9/11, but makes people feel better about it.
Anyway, the main reason is for increased security at a courthouse. You know, because of all the terrorist attacks that have taken place in court houses.
I'd feel better if they increased security at schools first and raised the standard of police forces.

You know, because of all the terrorist attacks that have taken place in court houses.

1.) Maybe not, but there are a heck of a lot of terrorism trials that go on at those federal courthouses...and if you're gonna build a new building, you may as well make it as secure as possible.

2.) I'm sure the funding is from the feds and was amped up after 9/11, but the real motivation for more secure federal courthouses and buildings is the Oklahoma City Murrah building bombing (that WAS classified as a terrorist attack). If you see any new federal buildings, you'll notice that a number of them have LOTS of green space around them to protect from any sort of vehicle based bomb attack like OKC. Since those buildings are usually in downtown areas, the feds have to buy the real estate which tends to be quite expensive. Then they have to build everything with 3 foot thick concrete and triple bulletproof windows...because let's face it, there are some real bad people who have their lives decided in those places.

I'm pretty conservative on government spending, but even I look at these buildings as damn near a necessity to keep legal and law enforcement officials as safe as possible.
