50,000 Northwest Ohio autoworkers out of a job if Rich Iott were our Congressman in 2008

Article published November 14, 2008
Auto industry can't compete with unions
http://www.toledoblade.com/article/20081114/OPINION03/811140330
Presidential candidate Barack Obama denounced corporate bailouts with great indignation as helping out the "Fat Cats." He said corporations needed to be responsible for what they do. Now, the "Chosen One" is urging President Bush to move quickly to bail out the struggling American auto industry. Why the change of heart? It is spelled UAW. It is all about Mr. Obama's financial and constituent base; it has nothing to do with what is good for America.

Why shouldn't they be allowed to fail? They can never be competitive in the world market as long as they are saddled with wages and benefits that are nearly double those of their international competitors. They are burdened with supporting union retirement funds and medical plans that are over-inflated and noncompetitive. Failure would break the yoke of union domination. That would be the best thing that could happen to the American auto industry.

We do not "need" an "American" auto industry. It is a world market. Isolationism is gone forever. The Japanese, Germans, English - even the Koreans - are building cars equal to or better than ours. If the auto industry is given the chance to start over, it will if it can do it competitively. It will never be competitive while shackled by the UAW. I am certainly not a proponent of a "new world order," but studies show that countries that have significant trade relations generally do not get into wars with each other. The bigger the world market and the more trade interdependence that exists, the better it is for world relations. The concept of "Buy American" makes about as much sense as not buying Michigan products because you are an Ohio State fan.

Where is Mr. Obama taking us?

Not to dovetail on wolfman's Blade posting written by Rich Iott above but I also located Mr. Iott's position on the issues. I think everyone should read the letter above written by candidate Iott coupled with his positions on the issues. Consider carefully...

Iott on Bailouts

The government bailouts are a corruption of our free market system, and a waste of taxpayer money. There is no getting around this core fact – there is no Constitutional authority for Congress to bail out any industry. Whenever you allow the federal government to pick the winners and the losers in an industry, you have a corrupt system. Washington invented the idea of “Too Big to Fail,” and we’ve been picking up the tab since. In many ways, Washington created our housing, banking and automotive crises in the first place, and compounded their mistakes with the bailouts. The bailouts are a raid on our – empty – federal treasury that must stop.

I'd say that says it all! Marcy supported the 50,000 auto workers here in Northwest Ohio Iott does not. GM and Chrysler are making progress towards a full recovery and paying back the loans. If Iott had his way the unemployment rate would be 25%+. He's stated he'd make the hard choices, his choices, not fearing being reelected. Rogue unaccountable Congressman. http://www.wgte.org/wgte/item.asp?item_id=7201

Wolfman you are well educated on your points and don't just run off at the mouth like most liberal posters, thank you for that.

Obama talks out of both sides of his mouth when it comes to corporations, he hates the evil profit stealing CEO's but is in bed with GE and the UAW. It's like he was for the war before he was against it right?

On the topic of bailouts you will never convince me that taking money from the people you claim to love (the middle class) to funnel it to your buddies was a good idea. Wolf can I have access to your checking account to take as I please if I promise to help "the needy". My friend's Mustang broke down last week and he is in need of repairs.

Robin Hood was a fairy tale and so it re-distribution of wealth.

I'm not some left wing nut job as I'm portrayed here on the blogs. I realize people have to work for what they get. Damn I worked my whole life never received welfare, SSI, or food stamps. Their is a balance here...without balance the country is in trouble. I don't believe in the fairy tail Robin Hood nor do I believe in the reality of Robber Barrons. If leaders chose to side with Corporations then the people will be left poor and jobless. Its the nature of the beast. Here's a letter that I wrote and was published in several newspapers. The Toledo Blade chose not to print it:

Election funding sources
To the editor,

As the anger rises in the country so does the vitriol of the multimillionaire demagogues who claim to speak for the average American.

In January 2010 the U.S. Supreme court overruled corporate and special interest spending limits on candidate elections. Since then we’ve had Target Corp. donate $150,000 to a Republican Minnesota governor candidate. Then recently we have multimillionaire Glen Beck’s employer, Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News Corp., donate $1 million to Republican candidates for governor. On top of this ThinkProgress reports that a record $400 million was spent this year from conservative groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Americans for Prosperity. The ruse is on! If these so-called American patriots get elected look for further erosion of the middle-class wage, the elimination/privatization of Social Security and other popular programs in favor of keeping the Bush tax cuts for the rich.
Oh by the way, our friends at Americans for Prosperity might not tell you this but only 10 percent of all campaign contributions come from unions and that number is now being dwarfed by the new Republican funding sources. Fair and balanced? You be the judge!

Chrysler said it has suspended some plant workers caught by a Detroit television station drinking alcohol and smoking what appeared to be marijuana during breaks.

Chrysler manufacturing chief Scott Garberding told WJBK-TV in a report that aired Wednesday night that the automaker identified some of the workers from Detroit's Jefferson North plant on tape and was pursuing the others. Garberding and other Chrysler executives came to the Fox affiliate's studio to view the footage.

Garberding told the station a few workers were suspended indefinitely without pay pending further investigation. He did not say how many.

"For us, this behavior is totally unacceptable and will be dealt with swiftly," he said. "What's difficult about this is these few people who exhibited bad behavior have painted a bad picture of what's an outstanding assembly plant filled with outstanding and committed Chrysler employees."

WJBK said it received a tip from a plant worker and followed about a dozen men for 10 days this month during their late morning, half-hour lunch break. It filmed them going to a convenience store to buy alcohol and taking it to a nearby park to drink and smoke.

The United Auto Workers said in a statement to the station that it strongly opposes the use of alcohol or controlled substances on the job.

"The employees involved in this situation do not represent the vast majority of workers at Chrysler who do a great job making high quality vehicles in some of the most productive manufacturing facilities in the United States," the union said.

President Barack Obama visited Jefferson North and other auto plants in July to argue that his administration's $60 billion bailout of Chrysler and General Motors was paying off through increased car sales and progress on battery-powered vehicles.

Chrysler received about $15 billion in government help and was placed under control of Italian automaker Fiat as part of its bankruptcy.

Hippie Fred what are you saying? You saying you never smoked pot in that hippie fur coat you use to wear back in the 1960s? Come on Hipster why don't you show us that picture you use to have posted on the 92.5 Breakfast Club KISS FM website. You think this is proper behavior of a practicing Catholic? I can tell you this is not new this is spin before the elections. The vast majority of employees at Chrysler are family members supporting their families the best they know how. Every employer has its few. Lets talk about your employment at KISS Fm when Denny would come to work drunk or hung over or after he fell into the water drunk at Put-N-Bay before he found God unlike YOU. That was fine back then when you were younger but now all you do is cast stones at glass houses.

Never said any of those things Paul Wohlfarth. You missed the point. Those family members should be upset that while they bust a hump to do thier jobs thier union is protecting the guys outside smoking pot and drinking. You want to talk about Denny, call Denny.
