Election Results

I proudly went and voted today for the first time as an Ohio resident :) Anyone know what the results are? While I'm not as concerned about council positions, I'm anxious to see what happened with the different issues on the ballet.

So why is it I can't seem to find results for State Issue 1? LCBoE results state "All Races except State Issue 1" and the Sec. of State's web site does seem to mention it either.

JackRB - because the ballots were made up prior to the decision that the issue didn't qualify to be on the ballot. So it appeared on all the screens/ballots even though the votes were not to be counted.

Thanks Maggie, I guess I missed that along the way.

From Toledo's Wikipedia entry, population numbers based upon the census survey :

  • 1950 : 303,616
  • 1960 : 318,003
  • 1970 : 383,818
  • 1980 : 354,635 : -7.6%
  • 1990 : 332,943 : -6.1%
  • 2000 : 313,619 : -5.8%
  • July 2006 estimate : 298,446 : -4.8% since 2000.

Carty's bizarre explanation :

"I'm not surprised and I'm not upset. I would think eventually we would wind up around, oh, I would say around 240,000 to 275,000, would be my guess. I don't think it's the number. I think it's the quality that you offer in a city - a combination of things from jobs, to neighborhoods, cultural activities, and sport activities, art activities."

But that "number" also means taxpayers. With fewer taxpayers, how can Toledo government afford to maintain current levels and offer the "quality" Carty speaks of?

And Toledo's population decline over the past 30-plus years is more dramatic when considering the increase in the U.S. population.

  • 1950 : 151,325,798 : 14.5%
  • 1960 : 179,323,175 : 18.5%
  • 1970 : 203,211,926 : 13.3%
  • 1980 : 226,545,805 : 11.5%
  • 1990 : 248,709,873 : 9.8%
  • 2000 : 281,421,906 : 13.2%
  • Est. 2007 : 303,111,027 : 7.7%

Population numbers for Lucas County :

  • 1970 = 484,370
  • 1980 = 471,741
  • 1990 = 462,361
  • 2000 = 455,054
  • 2006 est. = 445,281

Jul 8, 2007 Blade story titled As area cities lose residents, villages and townships surge. :

Tuffy Associates Corp. is in the midst of moving its 42-person national headquarters office from 5577 Airport Hwy. in Toledo to 7150 Granite Circle in Sylvania Township. Chief Financial Officer Karen Vellequette said only two employees reside in the city. “The rest of us live in Michigan, Perrysburg, Waterville, the suburbs. Some of them don’t get credit for the [2.25 percent] Toledo [wage] tax,” Ms. Vellequette said. Moving out of Toledo effectively results in a pay raise for most of the firm’s employees. She herself is one of the census statistics, having moved from Point Place to Ida Township, Michigan, five years ago.

Simply moving out of Toledo may not be enough. Moving out of Lucas County may be required to escape the reach of the People's Republic of Toledo.

Toledo can no longer use the excuse about a decline in the manufacturing industry. That excuse expired at least 10 to 15 years ago. Toledo has had 30 years to adapt to the world's changes. But hey, I hear that wind propellers, solar panels, and government subsidized ethanol will miraculously save Toledo.

The thing to remember about all of this is the Detroit Lions are 6-2.

That's fine for them, till their building catches fire... :)
