TPS Levy Slogan and talking points

At the recent Iott-Kaptur debate, the following was handed out to those attending in support of the TPS levy:

Slogan: Reform, Rebuild, Revitalize

4 bullet points on TPS flyer:

* The district’s academics are in strong shape.
* The failure of this levy would deepened the districts fiscal crisis and create a crisis in academic achievement.
* Passing issue 5 will promote job growth in this community.
* Passing issue 5 will help protect home values.

So - are the district's academics strong? Will academic achievement get any lower with less money? How does issue 5 promote job growth? And how does burdening taxpayers with extra taxes help protect home values in this economy with the continuing downward pressure of foreclosures on home values in the district?

  • Passing issue 5 will promote job growth in this community* Passing issue 5 will help protect home values

As far as job growth, that probably mean that they can hire more administrators and teachers.

As far as property values,we have been told in the past that passing a levy will increase property values. If that were true, then how come most everybodys values in Toledo are in the tank?

If honesty was required their slogan would be more like.
"Bend over, grab your ankles, here we come"!

Not one of those bullet points is true.

When will they stop lying?....

* The district’s academics are in strong shape.

Unbelievably not true. Look at state statistics.

* The failure of this levy would deepened the districts fiscal crisis and create a crisis in academic achievement.

Who has been in charge of the money? TPS. Who simply cannot restructure to reflect the drop in enrollment (thereby eliminating its deficit)? TPS. Who cannot make hard decisions? TPS (stonewalled by the teachers union).

* Passing issue 5 will promote job growth in this community.

Oh yes...because higher taxes always draw more businesses. Does anybody teach economics at TPS or simply parrot bullcrap on the NEA website.

* Passing issue 5 will help protect home values.

High taxes protect high home values? Please refer to my question for bullet #3: does anybody actually teach economics at TPS that could explain the utter fallacy of this statement.

------------

If this is the kind of education your kids are getting at TPS, they are going to be rather stupid and surprised by the world when they graduate...

What has TPS done to deserve more money?

I urge everyone to vote for the levy. Remember its for the "kids" .

"Remember its for the "kids"

Most of the budget goes toward teacher salaries, so it's not really "for the kids."

Like Toledo, and Lucas County, the school district will never get a levy passed in this economy because of the stagnant tax base. As employment and the population drop, so does revenue, but bureaucracy just doesn't get it and continues to try and prop itself up.

I get more than tired of hearing the propaganda about property values. You enjoyed price growth while sustainable and prosperous jobs fled. With such a strong reliance on financing, incomes are the only assurance of prices in real estate.

Since jobs have strongly fled, and continue to flee, then it only stands to reason that house prices must drop in order to make houses marketable. Hence, we should be wanting property values to drop, to increase affordability and to decrease taxes (which also increases affordability).

The housing bubble is over and so is the credit bubble. You're going to have to come up with more and more cash in order to convince a lender that you're a good risk for a mortgage. That will also drive prices down, just as the foolish lending of the previous era drove prices up.

If you're not planning on prices for housing to fall in this area, then you literally don't understand anything about economics.

And since the housing tax base will contract, it then only stands to reason that all government entities that depend on that income stream, must also contract. I've said this for years, and it grows ever the more true with the passing of time.

Group led by ex-Scott coach wants levy defeated

http://toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20101004/NEWS04/10030365

While I applaud the overall goal of drastically improving the quality of education at an inner city school...and advocating the defeat of a stifling fiscally-irresponsible levy, there are things in this article that really make me ask "WTF" on both sides:

1.) [Williams plans to] ask TPS students to stay home Friday when a head count is taken to determine state funding.

I see one poster on the Blade website already beat me to it: the ONE DAY the state uses to determine funding levels is the day you're going to hold kids out of school? So you get less money? What?

2.) _In a statement, the group said it wants to see "a nationwide search begin immediately for a dynamic, black male principal that will be a leader in the pursuit of academic excellence."

No no no. Cannot have it both ways. I don't give a good hoot 'n' holler if Scott has been a predominantly African American school for the last 50 years--in 2010, you cannot put out a sign that basically says "Only blacks need apply". It wasn't right 50 years ago when whites did it to blacks and it isn't right now. What if the most dynamic principal you find is of Indian or Hispanic descent? What if that person is (horrors) a Caucasian? Or what about a dynamic black FEMALE principal? What is this guy smoking? I understand about having role models, but demanding that people in leadership positions are a certain color is AGAINST every piece of racial equality legislation on the books. And they should know better.

Or maybe the bigger question is, what if Bowsher put it out there that they were looking for a dynamic white principal? You think Jesse, Al, and Floyd Rose would be in the city leading the marches for "justice"? You bet your ass they would.

3.) _Bob Vasquez, president of the school board, was critical of the group for urging students to stay home from school for even a day. "That's using the children and their welfare to get their point across," Mr. Vasquez said, adding he didn't think the group has a point._

Hmmmmmmm....let's see: your customers coming to you en masse to say the level of education at one of your outlets is not at a standard necessary for future opportunity--and the response from the president of the school board is basically "go f#&k yourself". You're pointless." Yep, that's exactly the way any competitive business would handle its customers. I'm sure if this group was for the levy, the response would have been a little better.

Wonder why students are leaving in droves? Take a good, long, hard look at this article and you will see all the pieces of the puzzle laid out before you.

remember the last "Issue 5" we voted on? Had to do with our being told that if we vote yes, we'd get our trash fee lowered - and how'd that turn out for ya?

I just like the irony...
