Another Restaurant Thread - NOT MEXICAN!...............................

How about a thread about independent family or Mom & Pops with good home style midwestern cooking? Seem's like they're getting harder and harder to find. Ours currently is Deez's Diner on N Holland Sylvania. Reliable, inexpensive, clean, go dressed any ol'e way, with portions not overly large but big enough to get the job done.

Your favorite?

We eat at the Mayberry Diner on Byrne Road Sunday mornings. Prices are reasonable and the food is good. Owner is cooking and stops out to say hi every now and then. Clean.

I like the Red Star Diner on Lewis Ave just over the border up in Temperance.

I occasionally stop at the Free-Way Drive-in for their corn beef hash. Free-Way is conveniently located across from St. Charles hospital on Navarre Ave in Oregon.

Glendale Garden is our favorite!

River Diner (not to be confused with River Café) is my mom and pop standby. They have a full menu, from steak to fish, etc, but I usually get the cheeseburger. One of the best in town and for $4.99 it comes with a mountain of the best fries. I think you just decided dinner for me tonight. And we also have a mom and pop Chinese restaurant in the point called Golden City. Nothing to look at, but the prices can’t be beat and I swear they are the only place in town that uses both pineapple and pickles in their sweet and sour sauce. Yum!

Glendale garden, Reynolds Garden, and Mayberry out in Sylvania... although the people who work at Mayberry are some of the friendliest I've ever found, and not in that fake way... also, Briiarfield and Brandys in Maumee aren't too bad

Thank you for bringing this topic up again, as my wife and I have been hunting for these hidden jewels, since we are religious Diners, Drive-in and Dives fans.

Is Inky's the real deal?

"Is Inky's the real deal?"

Meaning is it authentic Italian? Well, for Toledo, it's pretty good.

Their pizza dough is unique - rather like a combo of bread and pie dough.

I've had several of their pasta dishes over the years as well. Again, pretty tasty.

The "real deal" would depend on which part of Italy/Sicily you are talking about. There are numerous variations of cooking/tastes within the country.

Coming from the NE where there are amazing Italian-American restaurants on every corner, I really dislike Inky's sauce. That's just me and it must be a Midwest taste issue that makes them so popular. It's way too sweet!

I've traveled Italy twice and Foodie is correct that every region of that Country is different when it comes to food. However, I don't think you would find sauce that full of sugar anywhere outside of the Midwest!

Regardless, I love the atmosphere at Inky's. It's very home-y.

Does anyone know what happened to Our House Diner on Detroit?

posted by toledolen_ on Oct 01, 2010 at 01:18:17 pm     #

toledolen_ you've given me a severe craving for Boston's Little Italy.

It remains some of the best Italian food I've ever had. And you're right about the sauce in this region being much too sweet. And, too thick for my taste.

Give me a plate of linguine with a nice wine/clam sauce any day. Heavy on the capers please.

I like Inky's once in a while. They have a little different pizza than most around here.I agree that their sauce is sweet, but I like that for a change. The crust is also good in my opinion. They have been around a long time.I believe that is a testament to the quality of their food.I also like to order their antipasta salad with anchoives. There are not many places that have the option of anchoives for your salad. It is a very old school kind of place as far as the atmosphere.

Have you ever been in there on a Friday night after work? Wall-to-wall, even the bar area is SRO. But everyone has a good time.

Schmuckers is known for home cooking and about 16 flavors of pies. It's on Reynolds one block south of Bancroft. Closed Sundays.

Schmucker's makes good pie, and the Wimpy burger is pretty tasty.

That said, two doors down at Rocket's Cafe the food rocks. Best breakfast in town IMO

I can't support rockets. They seem to be deliberately taking on / attacking their neighbors business. Recently, every time I've been to schmuckers, I've seen signs in rocket's windows claiming things like "best pie in town"

Come on. That's just tacky.
