A Question About Driving Skills

I keep seeing cars change lanes in the middle of intersections here in the city. Often the cars are going pretty fast and they are not signalling the lane changes while they weave in & out.

I learned in driver's ed (in another state) that you shouldn't change lanes in the middle of an intersection. In general, there is too much going on (pedestrians, possibly bikes & wheelchair users, people creeping forward for right-on-red, others trying to beat the yellow light) to safely make a lane change right in the center of a busy intersection. Or so I have always believed.

Perhaps this is permitted in Ohio? I see it happen probably 20 times a day, all over town.

I don't believe it's permitted here or anywhere, for the very reasons you mentioned.

But then, neither is crossing a solid line, running a red light, disregarding stop signs, or pulling around parked cars and ignoring the fact that the guy coming toward you has the right of way.

Can you tell I'm a little peeved?

I have always been under the impression that is not legal. Chalk it up to typical Toledo drivers. There are no lanes in intersections so they must think that makes it more like a parking lot, lol.

It is not legal. The only ticket I ever saw my father get in his life was for this action.

Just happened to do it in front of a cop who was leaving the Speedway gas station at the corner of Reynolds & Heatherdowns.

my thoughts on this are that......oh...just a minute, there is a red light approaching by the school......I gotta make it so I can't type now...

There are so many things you see when you are driving that are not legal or are very irritating. The thing about most drivers is that we all think that we are good drivers and that the other guy is an asshole. One of my favorites is when someone uses the center left turn lane(suicide lane)as a passing lane. How about the person that is in a double turn lane that can't figure out how to stay in their lane while turning left and almost runs you off the road or into a curb.I also hate to be behind someone that constantly is hitting their brakes or brakes for a green light.I bet we could go on and on about the other guy and at the same time think that we ourselves are perfect drivers.

I firmly believe that everyone should have to do the driving portion of the drivers license every 5 years or so. As far as people doing stupid things, I try to remind myself of the times I've been an idiot and haven't signalled, or did something stupid.
I try not to get pissed off unless it's clear that the driver is doing something on purpose and putting others in danger.

Taking the driving portion over every five years would not help too much.I know I would be on my best behaviour during the test. Then after the test I would revert back to all my bad habits.I know what I have to do to pass the test and what they expect. The problem with most drivers is that as long as they know there is no police around they will not drive the same as when they are taking their test.I know I don't.

Not a perfect driver, but I obey the laws. Really not that hard.

I've often found that (especially after a few beers), when there's a lot of traffic, I can make much better time driving on the sidewalk. Thankfully this is a lot easier since they built entrance and exit ramps to the walks at all the intersections......

I have a very long commute to/from work every day, so I could ramble on about this subject for hours, but I'll try to give the abbreviated version: nearly every single day, I see people change lanes in the middle of an intersection/change lanes without signaling/change lanes right out in front of traffic moving much faster. I also see people tailgate (often just INCHES away from the person in front of them) even when the person they are tailgating is behind a slower moving vehicle or semi-truck, which makes it impossible for them to go anywhere....but, on the other hand, if you leave any space between you and the car in front of you, people will get all flustered and weave through traffic just to get one car length in front of you...
You also would not believe the amount of people who completely ignore the yellow flashing lights and blow through school zones (specifically on Heatherdowns) at 45 mph. It's really, really horrible.
There's an intersection relatively close to my house in which one street dead-ends into another...there are two lanes and you must either go left, or right...and EVERY day I watch some random driver get into the left-turn lane and turn RIGHT out of it to get around the traffic that has backed up in the right turn lane...
With my long commute for the last 7 years, you'd be amazed at things I've seen people do...I watched a guy get fed up and go around BOTH lanes of traffic using the SHOULDER of the road on US-23...people riding motorcycles down the highway at 80+mph while "popping a wheelie"....I always joke that my commute is going to be what kills me, whether it's from a horrible driver who causes a terrible accident, OR stress from the drive itself.

I would be grateful if some people knew how to signal properly. If a car in front of you is making a turn into a business or parking lot, how about a blinker to let the people behind know? I've seen so many idiots just slow down til they make their turn.

Also, what is up with people who race to make the left-turn light? The light turns yellow and then 3-4 more cars try to haul ass through.

Or how about the people that ride your bumper for a mile or more because you're only going the speed limit? After a while they finally realize you're not going to go any faster, get mad, then blow by you in the fast lane. Grow a pair already and quit tailgating.

I like hockey's idea about having to retake the written portion every few years. I think it would make people think harder about the rules -- and maybe even take a few of the people who don't know the rules OFF the road.

I know, I know, there's no guarantee anyone would follow the rules once they passed the test, but at least they couldn't claim they didn't know 'em.

Mixman, tailgating drives me nuts. For some reason it is especially bad on some roads by my house. Sometimes I will act like I am looking around so the idiot on my ass gets even madder thinking I am site seeing or something. I understand people want to go faster than the posted speed limit – but not in residential areas with kids please.

Has anyone checked out PlateWire? I've always been tempted to post a few plate numbers there.
