Exclusive: Foreign-Funded ‘U.S.’ Chamber Of Commerce Running Partisan Attack Ads

http://thinkprogress.org/2010/10/05/foreign-chamber-commerce/

The largest attack campaign against Democrats this fall is being waged by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a trade association organized as a 501©(6) that can raise and spend unlimited funds without ever disclosing any of its donors. The Chamber has promised to spend an unprecedented $75 million to defeat candidates like Jack Conway, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Jerry Brown, Rep. Joe Sestak (D-PA), and Rep. Tom Perriello (D-VA). As of Sept. 15th, the Chamber had aired more than 8,000 ads on behalf of GOP Senate candidates alone, according to a study from the Wesleyan Media Project. The Chamber’s spending has dwarfed every other issue group and most political party candidate committee spending. A ThinkProgress investigation has found that the Chamber funds its political attack campaign out of its general account, which solicits foreign funding. And while the Chamber will likely assert it has internal controls, foreign money is fungible, permitting the Chamber to run its unprecedented attack campaign. According to legal experts consulted by ThinkProgress, the Chamber is likely skirting longstanding campaign finance law that bans the involvement of foreign corporations in American elections. I can't say I'm not surprised after that Supreme Court case last January. Haven't done the leg work to see if it is directly related, but I'm guessing it is.

Welcome to a new age of politics, where cash is officially king. Too bad it will probably take another season to bring a corresponding liberal group together to counteract this downward spiral, red versus blue pissing contest.

The really sad part is that the Tea Partiers actually think that what they have is a grass roots movement.

Yeah, well nothing quite makes the Tea Party think like that, than success, does it? After all, nobody likes a bunch of democrat/rhino whiners and losers.

This is amazing!!! Now our politicians can get money from foreign companies as well as the local and national ones Marcy already takes money from for favors. This can't be good. I wonder if George Soros knows about this.

Shhh Fred cause only those evil conservatives fund PACs. Moveon.org / Teapartytracker.org plus countless other PACs are funded by George Soros (not even a US citizen), Soros donated $23,581,000 to various 527 groups dedicated to defeating President Bush in 2004.

When a successful democratic business man gives his money to a candidate it's considered Philanthropy, but when a republican does it, it's EVIL MONEY!

Sorry dbw, your wrong as usual - Soros is a US citizen.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Soros

"In 2010, Forbes lists Soros as the 35th richest person in the world, and the 14th richest U.S. citizen, with a net worth estimated at US$14.2 billion. Soros has given away $7 billion to various causes since 1979."

You don't want Soros to open a big can of Cassie Wilson (ex-WSPD employee)on you and sue you for defamation.

It‘s crazy that Republicans want to win so badly they don't care if foreign corporations and countries elect our politicians.

The 2008 election cost $5.3 billion for Congress and the presidency.

That would be chump change for China or Saudi Arabia.

Cassie Soros please don't sue me to fund a ACORN project.

Sorry ACORN doesn't exist any more...go find a new boogie man.
