Lee Williams Meats Inspection in Today's Blade

Check out the inspection of this facility. The items listed are but a few of the reasons I haven't patronized that place for nearly 20 years now.

Twice I bought "fresh" meat from there only to get it home and discover it was spoiled. Now I know why that happened. They've apparently never improved.

IMO, the facility is pretty disgusting.

Where is this place....so I can avoid it?

is Lee Williams the original house of meats?

posted by upso on Oct 11, 2010 at 12:06:00 pm     #

It's on 131st St. in Point Place.

upso: I don't know the answer to that question. I've lived in the Point for nearly 22 years and they've been there as long as I have. Probably longer.

Ok, that's the one I was wondering about. It looks like they may have some point been related to the house of meats chain, but I could be wrong?

Yes, they are related to the House of Meats chain. There's one in Oregon that was Lee Williams for years but has since changed to the House of Meats name.

Sorry upso. I believe I misunderstood your original question. Yes, it is Lee Williams House of Meats.

I there a state law that workers in meat markets must wear vinyl gloves when handling meats? At Kilgus Meats they never do.

I like the posting for Bikini's Bar & Grill: Observed cole slaw in the walk in cooler dated Aug. 31.

The place was inspected Sept. 14! EWWW!

Flinty,

Raw meats can be picked up by hand. They are near impossible to cut safely when using gloves. Most contamination of raw meats comes from equipment and not hands. Bone in saws are the worst offender at contaminating meat (so if you want it to last longer, avoid bone in cuts or find out which cuts were done by hand or on a boneless saw). Also, go early in the day and buy things that were cut the same day (saws can be operated for I believe up to 4 hours of use before requiring cleaning). Every cut at a given store has probably been touched by hand at least twice before it gets in front of a customer.

Ready to eat meats (deli meats, ham, cooked chickens) can only be touched in a glove and have to be served at below 38 or above 160ish degrees(can't remember exactly what it is).

I worked in a meat store/deli for a few years in high school/undergrad. Some of the best hungover work days of my life were spent behind a deli counter or in front of a band saw. At least I made it out with all of my fingers. Good times.

Well...cross another place off the list where I can get a fresh raw meat wardrobe for my wife's Lady Gaga tribute this Halloween...

Maybe the Monette's inspection desensitized me. This didn't seem that bad.

Brainswell,
Thanks for clarifying my question.

I have walked past some meat markets in Toledo and have smelled something spoiled, which is a dead giveaway. I don't know how these places can stay open.

I'd just like to say that the House(s?) of Meats that operate inside of the Andersons have never sold me anything but good stuff. I have never been unhappy with any meat, fish or poultry that I've bought there.

same here. always had quality experiences at the house of meats in the andersons. it's pretty much the only place we buy meat.

The one on Starr Avenue has never diappointed, it is run by Greg Huntermark

Hoops, I agree, I lived within walking distance of that place for 34 years (dunno if it's been there that long, but I was!) and was in there at least monthly for something or other, usually the bacon with the free eggs. mmmm, their miscuts were the best for sammitches. NEVER got a bad thing from them and now I'm practically next door to Andersons at the WM and that meat market is good, too...both of them! :)

anybody remember how Cub Foods ALWAYS smelled like spoiled meat? you smelled it as soon as you walked in the front door, totally disgusting. went twice, same thing, never went back.

I used to shop at Cubs all the time. Was always pleased with everything I got there. I always looked forward to when when they had grilled brat sandwiches out front.

bump on this thread
just visited the point place house of meats for the first time, and was really impressed!
everything came across as VERY fresh, no discolored meats etc and the service was great.

can anyone explain the difference in K&J's house of meats vs. Lee Williams?
Same branding, but clearly different management.

House of Meats is the name of the co-op that was formed to get better wholesale prices for a lot of stores at once. The different names are the individual stores or small chains, like Lee Williams, inside the co-op.

AH! thanks!
are there more than the two groups KL / LW involved?

now, that I don't know. I only know that little bit coz a co-worker of The Hubs cut meat as his second job and he worked at the Starr store.
