Retiring Sen. George Voinovich to oppose any extension of Bush-era tax cuts

"The American people should know that a lot of the reduction of their taxes is borrowed money from China," he said. "You've got to pay for it. You've got to pay for it. You've got to pay for it."

He said that "a lot of people" in the Senate have told them they agree with him on the issue, although most of them are in a tough spot politically as opposing any extension of the cuts would allow taxes to rise at a time when the economy is still struggling.

This is another argument for term limits: Senators do the right thing (and vote the right way) when they do not have to worry about their political future.

How come he didn't say "You've got to pay for it. You've got to pay for it. You've got to pay for it." when he voted on social security, war funding, medicare, social services, ect...

You're right. If anything, that proves how much different it is when re-election is foremost in a politician's mind.

Another interesting story about Voinovich in the Washington Post today:

"I'm so glad that I made up my mind two years ago that I wasn't going to run," Voinovich said. "I've been able to be a senator for two years."

That's because he was freed from the fundraising and campaigning that consume senators' lives - 20 to 25 percent of their time, he estimates.
