News Is Gone From WSPD

I couldn't help but notice the absence of local news on WSPD today. The absence was attributed to the apparent holiday vacation of the morning newsreader, and the apparent inability to find anybody else to read the local stuff, but the mid-day news normally fed from another Clear Channel station in Cincinnati , is also missing. They go to traffic, to weather to sports....NO LOCAL NEWS on the station. If that continues, only the Cumulus stations will have a local radio newscast in the city of Toledo.

I think "news" has been gone from SPD for the two years I've been laughing along.

I was talking to a friend today about starting a drinking game where you do a shot every time that clown in the afternoon says, "I don't know" but then goes into a mono log about some easily researchable topic.

Not sure my liver is up to the extreme punishment.

It takes real talented people to "read" news on the radio. Ok, I couldn't even complete typing that without laughing my butt off.

Yes the rotund talk show hosts and distant program director that daily call all union workers fat lazy and overpaid can't seem to work weekends or holidays and now don't even show up for work. The so-called news station dropped the ball last spring when Northwest Ohio was devastated by a deadly tornado yet the "NEWS STATION" didn't report or warn the locals till the following Monday. I think they were all bass fishing enjoying the weekend off while Rome burned. No the station is nothing more than a money machine for extreme right wing propaganda with the news coming a distant second. Only Blizzard Bill Spencer was up to the task of reporting all Saturday June 5th night. He was carried by K1oo and 13TV news giving a play by play that saved lives.

I don't know why anyone would listen to that POS of a radio station anymore. It was a great station at one time. Now it's owned and staffed by morons.

Aren't all media outlets getting that way now? Every single talk show and news show now has an agenda. They don't even hide it now. Tune in to this station to hear republicans bashed. Tune in to that station to hear democrats bashed.

I guess for the wet noodle types, it makes them feel better cause they belong.
Now thinking about it, isn't that what people want? To hear that they and their belief's are always right and everyone elses is wrong.

I sort of agree with Wolfman. The rightwing around here is hitched to the worst set of horses: Stainbrook and WSPD.

Recently I was criticized by a portly talk show host for leaving a warning on one of his U tube video productions. Every year at holiday times the hate filled AM station does a little PR to try an smooth out their rough edges. Well the video had the corpulent host slothing in the hinderlands of Whitehouse Ohio doing some Charity/PR work for our troops and his employer. The widely viewed video (56 hits) set off alarm bells as I watched in horror as the sedentary loudmouth looked to about need CPR. So I left a comment of warning that was roundly criticized by the near victim. My good deed for this Merry Christmas season! Ho Ho Hooo!

max, fred was on this morning. i'll admit, since taking over the restaurant and having completely new hours (driving in at 6:30 and home at 3:00) i've been listening to speedy... partly for the inane chatter, partly for the traffic, and mostly because it is somehow less depressing than npr. anyways... haven't noticed a lack of local stuff... when i catch it, it's ALL local. no comment on the quality :)

upso...Fred does a excellent job on local talk. I was referring to the actual local newscasts which follow Fox at the top and stand alone at the bottom of the hour , which are missing.

I could not stomach the extremely rotund morning "host" any longer. He uses the word "moron" so much, I think it is his middle name.
Fred Moron LeFebvre.
(what kind of "host" hangs up on you when you disagree with him or his carpetbagger father ?)

I switched to Mike Scott jazz show on WCWA 1230.
6-10 a.m. Any news that is missed on WSPD is not really missed, I read it in The Blade online anyway. That is where they get their news, and then criticize The Blade. Two-facing at it's most obvious.

Ahhhhhhhh - morning jazz....how peaceful !
Fred is dead, in my book.

NoSheet,
When TPS is in session WXTS-FM 88.3 plays jazz from Scott H.S. from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Their A&R list is up to date and there are minimal interruptions for some PSA's and weather forecasts. A true Toledo gem of the airwaves.

Thanks, MA - I didn't realize that station was still on air.

Back in the day - 1985 - I was a DJ on WXUT at UT. Not a rotund and portly DJ, either !

I think there was a partnership with Scott H.S. at that time to share the license and broadcast times between UT and Scott. I thought that dissolved.

Glad to hear they are still on air.

Fred is dead fo' sure, and now the carpetbagger is out-da-door all day long !

I too have strayed from the once mighty speedy. 760 WJR in the morning (5:30 to 9:00AM)with host Paul W Smith a moderate giving a variety of differing views and subjects. Then following Paul we have Frank Beckman, more conservative but believable, gives the Midwest daily news. In the afternoon from noon to 3:00 we have Thom Hartman on 1310 WTDW Detroit. The once startup business owner gives a moderate take on today's politics interviewing both liberal and conservative guests for a balance picture. Then from 5:00 t0 7:00 we have Mitch Albom on 760 WJR for again a balanced news entertainment program.

Me too, NoSheetSherlock. I think LeFebvre is one of the most unprofessional gasbags on the air. He hung up on me, too, because he didn't like my position, even though I was very polite.

A radio host can be right or left wing, but to hang up on someone because you don't agree with them shows what a joke LeFebvre is. What a coward!

I don't know if Speedy's audience realizes how common this is at the station. It's happened to me a couple of times which led to my outspokenness against the station. Since I've rallied against these clowns I've heard from others that have experienced the same thing. Seems the station has a mission and if you disagree they'll hang up on you or just simply pot you down and talk over you. Now if you agree with their nonsense then most often you'll win a prize like some Pavloff's dog. The afternoon goof always pretends to be from the area and he always has this small circle of right wing kook book salesmen that overlord the airwaves. This carpetbagger has an opinion of Northwest Ohio that he doesn't share with his Toledo radio listeners. To find his true feelings about this area check out his website. http://www.brianwilson.net/

Upso I don't think so he's allergic to the Swamp Gas of Northwest Ohio. Is he risking his health or was the whole story a lie?

Looks like mumbles forgot to wake up either in town or down in Va. this morning, the first day of Fred's vacation. Listeners got FOX radio and a cancer interview . No news, no weather, no traffic reports, no time checks...NO NOTHING local. Great job of serving the public.

yeah, i was a little bummed out about that. hearing newscasters talk about how important christ is in their lives, is a little weird to hear at 7am

Turn the channel........or off. I remember my boss wanted to advertise on WSPD and it took forever to convince him he could do just as good driving down the road and throw money out the car window. I said this station is dead, nobody listens, although apparently he still did.

hey nosheet...

i was a dj at UT back in '85 as well - still have some of their vinyl with WERC sharpied onto the cover. i was terible but still managed to cover 2 or 3 hours a week for them.

hey sandwich - do you remember Greg Tye ? He is doing something on PBS now......He made it to the big time. Some people at WERC were in Broadcasting for a degree - I just did it as a lark. What a hoot !

I saw big man's name on YOUTUBE doing something, also - Von Regan Davis. Remember him ? He taught me how to sleep on the couch at WERC after security locked up. We never went home back then - those were the days !

My air name was "Michael Ryan". What was yours, if you don't mind my asking.

nosheet -

i knew the three or four people in charge at the time and they were very cool to me - but i only attended probably two staff meetings and don't remember their names. i was/am a big brit pop/punk fan so they were happy with the music i would put on - i spoke very little, got my psa's on on-time, and showed up for my shift - that was enough for them. i did a shift for most of two and a half years just using my own name.

Nosheet and sandwich; I was at werc also from around 1980 to 1985 (I took 1992 off from shool). I remember Von Regan Davis, I still talk to a few people from back then. I had an occasional show, and mostly did production and worked with the various music directors.

I guess we "don't need to know" as WSPD's promo says, when it comes to the local newscasts. The newscasts remain among the missing this week around the clock. You would think with all the people at CC-Toledo, there would be somebody to take over from the rookie newsreader when he goes on holiday. Maybe that is how it was done in the "big city" where mumbles comes from.

Rehash mishmash hodgepodge of reruns of old talk radio. You'd think the "News Station" would be on the cutting edge since its run as a nonunion organization. WJR 760 AM Detroit had no reruns but current news programs all last week. I guess fat and lazy gives a new meaning to the term Speedy!

You don't really think students are going to spend a school day listening to teachers or studying, do you?

posted by Wulf on Dec 27, 2010 at 05:52:22 pm     #

actually, Wulf - all that is needed is a DJ in the studio, a receptionist at the front desk, and maybe a sound engineer hanging around just in case....

thats all that was needed at WERC as we broadcast.
School went on as usual.
