X-country skiing

anyone into x-country skiing? if so, where do you enjoy going locally or "not so locally"?

i hit ottawa park alot since i live just a few blocks away. i occasionally go to oak openings and wildwood. when time is on my side, i go to our family cottage in the irish hills. i love that area.

with the snow on the ground, my kids and i have already been out a few times. i'm sure we'll go out alot during xmas break.

Would love to go x-country skiing, know of any place that rents skiis or has beginner classes?

Snow boarding would be fun too, but alas no hills around here :) Do recommend Snowshoe in WV.

growing up, i think they used to rent skis from the ottawa park club house. i believe wersel's did as well and still may rent.

i'm just glad i had parents that introduced me to the activity and i'm very thankful for young son likes it alot.

Used to be an instructor at the Ottawa Park club house! Any more, I'd say the Grayling, Michigan area or Pinckney just north of Ann Arbor.

Check the Metroparks website, we learned at night in Oak Openings and it was a blast! Best time I EVER had in the cold. We had borrowed our gear from friends but I think you can rent some at Mountain Man on Reynolds just off Central. have fun!!!

A few years ago, my wife and I rented cross country ski sets from Mountain Man Sports. From their rentals Web page:

Mountain Man Sports offers snowblades, snowshoes, snowboard, downhill ski and cross country ski sets and car racks for rental. Snowboard sets include a snowboard, boots and bindings. Ski sets include skis, boots, bindings and poles. All skis and snowboards are professionally fit, tuned and maintained.

Years ago, I got my local downhill skiing fix at Mt. Brighton, located a little north of Ann Arbor. I liked skiing at night. You could bust up after work and ski or snowboard until 10:00 or 11:00 p.m.
