Don't worry, next you'll need a license for each shoe you own.
It's not required. They encourage it because if the bike gets stolen, it has a better chance of being recovered if it's in the system.
Remember when Ben Konop wanted to pass a (stupid) law, requiring every bicycle rider to wear a helmet ?

They are not required, but they have been available for at least the last 50 years.I don't think there is any charge.
Always been a requirement. I always get mine licensed. Easier for the police to get your bike back to you if stolen. It used to be a dollar, and you took it to the nearest fire station to be checked out.

The linked article says that there's no charge for the registration.
Doesn't sound like such a bad thing - register your bike (for free), & if its stolen have the possibility of it being recovered.
If it were mandatory for a fee, I'd agree that would be unreasonable.
As a person who has had their bike stolen, a registration would not help much. Very few bikes are recovered, according to police. They are stolen, spray painted, rode for a short time, then dumped.
With all the crime going on in T Town you actually think cops spend their time looking for your missing Huffy?
I've actually had a few friends get their stolen bikes found. A license would help out a lot.
ok, here's why I don't think it would help.
1) unless the bike has an id number stamped into it, a license would be useless. Take bike, throw away license if attached. Even is there is a stamped number, criminals will just file/sand it off.
2) Who is going to do all this extra licensing and investigating? Oh, the police. Sorry, but I don't put bikes high on the priority list for cops to spend their time working on it. Now if you want to charge for licenses, creat a "bike task force" with those funds and keep it self funded, then go ahead.
3) Buy a freaking bike lock/chain. Very few bikes are stolen with proper bike locks in place.
Saw a commercial about this and was tempted to post here but didn't. Lucas county was giving away free bike licenses for a day or so. (forget which ones).

I think bikes are stolen so that crooks can use them to ride into neighborhoods to commit burlaries and other crimes. Just look on a police blotter sometime and see how bikes are stolen, then later found discarded. Just like when license plates are stolen. Very common. I would have a bike registered if there's even a chance that it would be recovered.
