Crystal Bowersox snubbs/forgets Toledo

I caught an episode of Chelsea on Etv last night/early this morning and her guest was Crystal Bowersox. While not a fan of either, I thought it would be nice to hear Toledo mentioned on the show. Not so. During the interview, Chelsea mentioned that sox came from playing in the subway/streets of Chicago. Bowersox agreed and went on to say that she ran into alot of coke heads and weird people, but enjoyed playing in the subways of Chicago. Never mentioned Toledo at all. I guess that parade, pep rally and Mayor Motorcycle Leather are all but a forgotten memory. At least some had fun imagining she really cared about Toledo.

Why do Toledoans think that because someone was raised and got his start here, he has a duty to acknowledge his native city at every breath? Jamie Farr went way overboard on Toledo and Packo's in MASH and now we expect the same from every performer from Toledo. It just makes us look desperate and needy to demand that we be featured in every interview and appearance of someone who was connected with this place. We need to get a life.

What celebrity talks about their hometown (not even, really) in every interview? Zzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Non-issue.

hockey, it's possible the host just realized a story with a chicago angle would be WAY more interesting to the audience than a toledo story. most people would probably find chicago subway stories more interesting than toledo pep-rallies, as sad as that might be.

That is not the case,pete.
The reality is she isn't from here and didn't even get her start here. All those who jumped on the sox bandwagon and wanted to "make" her a native toledoan was pathetic. Of course, she rode that wave because she needed the votes and attention for Idol.
Now, she doesn't need Toledo, or anyone here so it's all been tossed aside and forgotten. As the above interview reference has shown, that it exactly what has happened.
I don't care whether or not she ever mentions Toledo nor if I ever see or hear from her again.
While not born and raised in Toledo, I have been here for over 10 years and have grown some real Toledo pride and am offended when I feel the city and it's residents are "used".

No, I don't expect her to be like Mr. Farr about Toledo, nor do I expect her to mention Toledo in every interview.

PS-never said it was an issue, just mentioning it on a Toledo message board for discussion

Geez, Hockey. Did she run over your dog or something?

She went to Oak Harbor High School, attended the Toledo School for the Performing Arts and regularly played clubs in Maumee and Toledo. You are weird.

I remember when Gloria Steinem used to talk about her upbringing in Toledo and how hard it was - living with a single mother in a rat infested home. Always made me feel bad. Maybe Crystal feels she doesn't have a lot of good memories in Toledo either and decided to save us some embarassment.

Thanks, HF. I didn't realize she wasn't from Toledo... but I guess Port Clinton is pretty close to Toledo and a part of the Toledo Metropolitan Statistical Area, anyway. I myself couldn't understand all the frew-fraw about her anyway.

I knew I was gonna ruffle the "sox" fans with this. Like I stated above, I thought she was gonna mention playing in and coming from this area in the interview that addressed her past. It didn't. I thought that was a little odd.

No, she didn't run over my dog.
No, I'm not bitter.
No, I am not a fan and don't think that she is all that.
Unless she's releasing a sex tape and/or attending rehab she'll be long forgotten in 3 years or playing at the zoo's summer tour.

It's just a post.

Hockeyfan: I know exactly how you feel.

I was watcing a YouTube video of Ohio State wide receiver, Dane Sanzenbacher, talking to the media:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbwhV23y_pg

He talks about the Ohio State / Michigan game, but never bothers to point out that he's from Toledo.

Why ??

Now if she would just get rid of those ridiculous and tacky dreadlocks............

For what it's worth, Crystal had a lengthy interview yesterday on Here & Now, the news/talk program that airs at noon in Toledo on WGTE. She spoke at length about Toledo, and how much she was moved by the community's outpouring of support for her American Idol quest. The host played a bit of "Holy Toledo," and they discussed the meaning of the song. So, I wouldn't get all hot & bothered that she didn't mention Toledo in one interview. It's definitely part of her story that she talks about.

This is so silly, really. It was about a 5 minute interview- she surely can't discuss her entire life story in 5 minutes. And she did live in Chicago for years- why is she not allowed to talk about that?

Like Ryan said, she did play at Village Idiot on Monday after Christmas. No hype about it- just coming back to pay respects to a bar that supported her through the years. I can't see how that is a snub on her end.

Come on, there HAS to be better things to complain about.

I'm not a fan, nor do I dislike her, so I've got no bias here, but I was going to make the same point Courtney did: In a very short interview segment, a guest really does not have time to get into every last particular. The host probably has a short list of questions/points she wants to address, and possibly even shares them ahead of time with the guest. The guest is probably told, "We have x minutes to talk about a, b and c," and most guests simply then follow the program.

If she would've been asked about Toledo, she would've talked about Toledo.

Why isn't Crystal addressing Toledo's pothole problem? Just sayin'.

There are people who grow up in Toledo and know they either need to or want to leave Toledo to achieve their dreams. That she comes back, plays in her former haunts, and hasn't said "Toledo is a rotting stinking hole in the earth" or some such thing is good enough "support" for me. Anything else is gravy.

After all, if we're going to complain about Bowersox, why don't we complain about Katie Holmes? She's only married to one of the world's biggest movie stars, has had a few hits of her own, and doesn't seem to be foaming at the mouth about "Toledo, Toledo, Toledo" either...

Hoops, if she gets rid of the dreads, she looks like everyone else. I personally am not fan, don't watch Idol, and am always surprised when I hear her on the radio, (she's really good!) but she needs to maintain her personality, her oneness, or she's gonna get lost in the shuffle. I don't care if she never does another thing for/in Toledo, if she can just hang on to what makes her unique!

HockeyFan :

According to Wikipedia, Jim Harbaugh was born in Toledo.

Jim Harbaugh, the same guy that played QB for The University of MICHIGAN, and just coached Stanford University to an Orange Bowl victory, earlier this week.

Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Harbaugh

Does it irk you that he doesn't mention Toledo very much these days ?

posted by CharlesBronson on Jan 07, 2011 at 12:41:42 am     #

Oh brother, even more?

Did toledo have a parade for Harbaugh, that ohio state football player, or brad pitt? NO!

My point was that I just thought that if someone got a freaking parade in their honor, they could at least mention them in a cheezy interview, WHEN ASKED ABOUT THEIR CAREER START.

I know she didn't "write" the interview or run the show. But, she was asked about "getting her start" and she answered "chicago", not Toledo.

If you weren't so "star struck" with her, you might be able to at least consider my point. I'm not a fan, but I'm not "out to get her" or even ruin her career. I don't care whether she becomes a superstar or not. I just thought that in that ONE interview, it would have been nice for her to mention Toledo. That's all. I don't think she should tattoo "toledo" on her forehead or change her name to Toledosox.
In summary: It was an interview that presented an opportunity to mention the city that gave her a parade and "pep rally". She didn't. I thought it was odd.
Sorry to ruffle your "sox" feathers. I'll try to stick to Carty bashing instead.

Why is it that people that look at the situation rationally are over zealous fans? Do you have any idea in that little head of yours how many interviews that chick has had to have done in the last 9 months? Good grief I wish I had your time.

Oh good grief, who really cares about her? I don't recall Katie Holmes going on about Toledo anymore than Bowersox, people are people. If you need someone famous to make your world seem a better place then I feel for you. Toledo has enough problems without needing to rely on good words from people who have moved on. Truth be told if Toledo was such a great place maybe some of these people would still be here even with fame. Did either one of them even live in Toledo proper?

She didn't snub Toledo or her home area. She was asked about playing in the Chicago subways and answered that question.

posted by max on Jan 07, 2011 at 02:24:56 pm     #

Once again, this post isn't about "every" interview in the last 9 months. This was about one specific question brought up about her getting her start in one interview that I caught. It was a post with an opinion. It has nothing to do with the size of my head, but since ryan brought it up, I'm assuming he wants to measure mine. Sorry ryan, I don't go that way. I have nothing against it, it's just not for me.

1-Toledo gave a parade to bowersox, not holmes, pitt, etc., who is someone who never lived in Toledo
2-Every news/radio station promoted bowersox as being "toledo's own".
3-In ONE interview I watched, her "roots" were brought up as being in Chicago and never mentioned Toledo.
4-I found that to be a slight snub. Nothing more, nothing less.

Yes, I know. She could have been threatened not to mention Toledo, she could have had memory relapse, she could have completely forgotten Toledo, or, she may never have been here to begin with.
Poor, poor bowersox. Hockeyfan is being an unrealistic bully that is just looking for things to bash her with when he should just get back into the fanclub line.
I stand corrected, I guess.

Who wants to bet that some American Idol dollars helped put that parade on? I would. They were not going to bring a whole camera crew out here without knowing that there would be a decent turnout.

Even if the city did "give her a parade," it was just as much to Toledo's advantage as it was to her. The opportunity for national limelight that is good news does not come up very often. Remember the Dushane/McNuggets New Years fiasco? I still hear jokes about that from out of towners.

Bowersox doesn't owe the city anything. She grew up in the sticks and played a few gigs in town. There is a reason she played in Maumee last week and not at a Toledo venue. Hockeyfan, how many times did you go see her play before she was on Idol?

What's with the vibe in this town that says "You're never going to make it out of Toledo, but if you do, you owe us for everything." This city doesn't support local musicians like other similarly sized cities. Most of the people here are content with "Cranking up the IOT" and telling the kid with the guitar and a dream to cut their hair and get a real job.

Let me see if I understand this, hockey. This is what I have so far.

You are offended that Crystal did not say she was from Toledo in an interview.

"I found that to be a slight snub" -Hockeyfan

In a bizarre twist, you also claim she isn't even from Toledo.

"The reality is she isn't from here" -Hockeyfan

You are also not from Toledo.

"While (I was) not born and raised in Toledo..." -Hockeyfan

While this has been entertaining, why are you wasting our time?

2 things are for sure:

Hockeyfan brings up gay stuff way more than anybody on this board, including the person he has always insinuated is gay. I find that interesting.

And he created a thread without thinking it through. When every person tried to explain he should rethink it he became mad and instead of being a man and trying to understand an alternative he keeps digging a bigger hole.

See China yet?

How is nearly 30 years of involvement considered snubbing?

According to the press release, below, the album will be recorded in either Nashville or Los Angeles. Crystal will be working with collaborators such as Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, Jakob Dylan and John Lee Hooker.

Jakob Dylan won't commit to any of my upcoming projects, so I'd say she's doing alright.
