Crime Times - Newspaper Review (photos)

First and foremost, let me say this...yes I know this material is public record online. The appeal of this publication is that it provides a material presence that helps inform people who are not online, or do not know about looking this material up. Secondly, for only a $1.00 I can't help but want to support this magazine which aims to help raise public awareness, and serve as a bit of a fun local trash rag for criminals in our area.

Favorite part: The 'wanted' ad. I think including info and photos about people who are wanted for recent crimes is really smart and helpful. This publication should look into including more "wanted" information and photos to help bring criminals in.

Cost: $1, found all over town

Enjoy your free preview, for the sake of a review.

I want the name of Rashawn's barber. Is Rashawn a popular name? I mean, is there a "Reshawn", or Roshawn?

You know, from a business perspective, there is a real glint of genius in this publication. Take content that is essentially free (because it's public record), organize it, print it, get circulation in the community (and figure out how many people are picking up a copy), find advertisers, and charge minimally for a copy.

There are plenty o' people who pay for and read the "entertainment" tabloids--why not have a tabloid filled with the local freaks and miscreants? Jeez, it's a print version of the TV show "Cops"...which has only been on the air 20+ years. This thing really has a bright future, I think.

Really. Simply. Brilliant. Good stuff.

No bright future. The newest arrests are free on the Sheriff's website, updated daily. The dead tree version when printed is already old news. There was a thread about this two weeks ago.

Maybe, maybe not. The places I see it, it sells out each week. Additionally, they have sponsors paying for ads now.

JM--hate to break this to you, but there are very few people who troll the sheriff's website every day for the newest residents of the local prisons.

However, there are plenty of people who stop at a gas station, convenience store, or other location who would see this and pick it up, if only for a laugh.

As OK just said, it's sold out each week...

Well, the market will decide whether this succeeds or fails.

As it should.

Take the other thread about this magazine for an example: a lot of people on that thread never have seen or known of the online records and database.

Now magnify that, then add in the people who just want to gawk, laugh, and don't have internet access. At only $1 this publication is easy to pick up.

I would have a difficult time convincing myself not to buy it.

I wonder if we could send in your pan handler stories to them...
