Toledo Talk

Another downtown watering hole bites the dust...Easy Street Bar.

I was just told by one of their employees that tonight is their last night.

Someone listening to some of you guys around here would be fooled into believing the downtown Toledo bar scene was part of a thriving metropolis.

There still are a few more downtown watering holes that are circling the bowl.

Easy come, easy go.

Not to worry, the Chinese are here checkbook in hand.

I wonder if, as a good Samaritan, you wouldn't mind reaching out to the police to express your concerns?

What am I supposed to report? I'm not standing there all day waiting for something to happen.

so what exactly do you want to see happen?

They could put cameras around there. They could (and should) move that bus stop. Take away Jennifer Snack's liquor license.

I agree there are some shady people hanging around there. Fortunately I haven't encountered any during the work day but boyfriend and I walked to Bleakhouse a couple weeks ago for Saturday brunch and looked like a drug deal was going on at the corner of Adams and Huron. With Cilantro's reopening and Fowl and Fodder opening next week the police will need to monitor that area a little better if they don't want to scare off customers

Good opportunity to use the speed cameras.

Why be so specific? They could use their meth, heroin and/or crack cameras, too.

I get the feeling sometimes that some of our toledo neighbors and friends would have a heart attack walking around in Brooklyn from all the shady characters going about their day and hanging around at the neighborhood bodegas.

That's the whole point. If that environment appeals to you go live there. We would prefer not to duplicate Brooklyn or anything resembling a garbage pit.

The owner of Jennifer Snacks tried to create an account but they aren't accepting new members so he sent this for me to post:
Good afternoon to all, this is the owner of Jennifer snacks. I just wanted to share my input unfortunately looks like the sign up page is down so a good friend of mine will be posting this me. I wanted to let everyone know that your concerns are being taken seriously, and I appreciate any feed back, but first just a little background on my store: I purchased the store 2 years ago, the old owner had been causing a lot of trouble in the neighborhood and was actually in the process of losing the store due to the criminal activity. Not only that, but people were terrified of the store, wouldn't even come in here. I decided to take it over and start a new leaf. With that came all of the problems the old owner had acquired and that includes the verge of loosing the beer and wine license,(we don't sell liquor). In reference to that is the article posted above. They did try to take the license but did not due to the major improvements that have been made to this store. Anyone that has been down here for the past 3-4 years knows this. A couple of people have referenced the shady crowd around the area and say my store bring them down here. I feel like you really don't know the area very well of this is your argument. If you don't know, there are three shelters all within walking distance of my store. Not only that but the cherry wood apartments are right down the street. The bus stop obviously doesn't help but that's public transportation and people need to get too and from work. If my store was not here these issues will still be present. I'm guessing no one has been down to the city grill? They are right off the bus stop, right across from the government center. If you don't know, well here you go, (http://www.toledoblade.com/Courts/2017/04/27/Restaurant-accused-of-food-stamp-fraud.html). I have a lot of friends down here and they know the amount of effort and work I put into this downtown community. I want it to thrive just like everyone else does. When going to court to deal with the license situation due to the old owners actions, the mayor came and stood by my side. Any of you here about the recent break ins and robberies that have been happening down here? Jimmy johns robbed at gun point, lawyers office on Adams break in, assault on zombie walk night? Well my cameras acutally caught all of those incidents on cameras and have helped police prosecute those offenders. I work closely with the chief and the officers that lay there life down everyday to keep this community safe as possible. Our neighborhood is not as bad as some people are making it, and blaming a store for certain situation that occur downtown is just wrong in my opinion. Anytime someone's outside for longer than two minutes you'll see me out there telling them to leave. Mind you I don't know who they are or if they have anything on them. But this is a store that people actually respect now, and I have people that walk past city grill from the government center that come to this store. I have people from lasale that count on me to have that loaf of bread or that carton of eggs on Sunday morning. The problem is not my store, the problem is the lack of community effort. The lack of effort to get the homeless of the street, the lack of effort to take these drugs of the street, the lack of police presence,(which they are working on, plan to hire 40 officers over the next year). It's a community effort to clean the city up, we have to take the initiative. Toledo is my home, and I'm working everyday to make it a better place. Anyone is welcome to come in here M-S from 8am-10pm and express any feelings they have to me, I encourage opinions and suggestions to better the community.

I'd like to clarify that I was not blaming Jennifer Snack for the drug problems, homelessness, etc. But at the end of the day that area is seeing a resurgence of businesses, and I am worried that they may not survive if people are turned away by the number of people loitering or using/selling drugs. I'm also not a fan of The City Grill but that is at least separate from the strip of businesses on Adams. At the end of the day, this crowd would not be in the area if it wasn't for the carryout. I'm not saying it should be closed, and I don't really know what the answer is. I don't think the bus stop should be there on Jackson, and I think wherever they put the bus stop it should be a building or some sort of confined structure where people can use the restroom, etc.

posted by ckbeats21 on Oct 27, 2017 at 12:42:30 pm     #

I don't know what the answer is. But I know how long it takes to overcome bad PR. For example, a middle of the night facebook post from the city of Toledo regarding water a few years ago will be harming us for many years to come. Flint this, flint that.
Bad PR is hard to overcome.

If that corner is a priority, LaSalle needs to be dealt with as much as anything else.

A store like that is like an Oasis in the Serengeti. The lake is not to blame for the appetite of the lions. But a gathering place gathers good and bad, hunter and prey.

I don't think it is fair to yank Jennifer's license if they aren't contributing to the problem. Now if she is allowing people to loiter inside her store and doing underage sales or allowing people to buy ineligible items with EBT cards (like the lady that owned the Snack Shop store in the Spitzer was doing) then they should into revoking it.

The times I've encountered shady people in that area was when I was with my boyfriend and they didn't harass either one of us, we simply just walked past them but it still made me a little nervous even in daylight. I hope the don't harass Jorge's customers when Cilantro's reopens because they like to congregate in front of the old Charter One and Magic Wok.

Speaking of getting harassed, boyfriend and I went to Poco Loco several nights ago and were harassed by a pan handler. I guess they are starting to move uptown now.

I go to both Jennifer's and the City Grille frequently, and have never experienced any sort of problem at either place.

The times I have been hassled and/or approached by people over there have always been at night. Not walking to the City Grille at noon.

To some people, this is probably exciting urban life. All part of the vibrancy of inner city living and working.

Agree with Justread, it's not during business hours I have noticed the problems. It's been weekends and after 5. I go to Magic Wok and Bleak House sometimes for lunch and haven't run into any problems.

posted by classylady on Oct 27, 2017 at 03:28:19 pm     #

The panhandlers and/or just the newness wearing off seem to have chased away customers from Adams Street Cafe. I've witnessed some very aggressive panhandling and even during morning and afternoon times. I question the honesty of anybody who's DT often stating they've not witnessed or been a direct victim of aggressive panhandling.

Last weekend I noticed that Potbelly has eliminated their Saturday hours. I wondered why it took them 6 months to figure out.

Let me guess, the 5* club here will claim they're doing so well Mon-Fri that they wanted to give their employees Saturdays off from working?

Next they'll be shaving a few hours on each end of their 7am-7pm M-F schedule because most days there isn't a single customer there during the early morning or late afternoon.

Quite often tho I have seen one of DT Toledo's "scary people" outside the entrance doing pushups while speaking loudly to himself. However, this usually occurs nearer the lunch hour when Potbelly does have some business.

Iím not surprised about potbelly ending their Saturday hours. The owner was very forthcoming about the risk of being open on the weekends Downtown. He said heíd do it if people showed up, and if they didnít, heíd stop.

With the growing number of brunch options coming to the area, I wouldnít expect many people are looking for a fast food sandwich on the weekend. I know Iím not!

I head to the warehouse district every other Saturday for a haircut, and itís been really interesting to see the variance in crowds and parking availability.

Today was insanely packed with some sort of family focused Halloween event happening in Hensville. Iím surprised with how often they shut down their portion of St Clair to traffic. Itís pretty cool to see so many people walking around but man alive the traffic can be awful with people looking for parking.

There were a lot of people on St. Clair this morning with the family event. It was cool to see the bounce house set up in the park area and all the young kids.

I went to Bleak house with a couple friends this morning and they were doing a good business. Farmer's market was pretty dead this morning but the weather was bad and it's time they moved it indoors.

No surprised with Potbelly not being open on Saturday morning. He didn't have any breakfast food on Saturday and that area of downtown never has anything happening on a Saturday morning. He is open tonight for the Janet Jackson concert and I believe he is open on Saturday home hockey game nights before the game.

Man the Adams street area wanted a Rita and some street taco's around 9 and was too nasty out to walk and the Uber app was showing premium pricing of around $13 one way and we were scared it would be the same coming home so we were looking at over $30 after tips in an Uber ride and decided to just drive and the parking lot behind there they used was full and we were lucky enough to see someone parked on the street getting into his car and were able to grab his spot. I wish some of the businesses that had parking on Adams would allow Poco loco and OT customers to park there after hours.

I picked up a sandwich at Fowl & Fodder at lunch. The sandwich was good but there was too much salt on the chips. Was a little expensive, $9.95 for a wrap and chips.

They were packed and people we told it was 20 minutes to get a table but there isn't a lot of seating. I was told when I placed my phone order it would be ready in 15 to 20 minutes and I arrived 20 minutes later and still had to wait 15 minutes before they had my order ready for take out.

Staff was really friendly. They told me they are planning on being open every day and right now their hours on weekends will probably be 8 to 4 and they'll adjust them according to how business is. They have a liquor permit and bar.

I noticed Bleak House was open today. I thought they were closed on Monday's. Adams Street Cafť looked packed when I walked past it, I wish they were open on Saturdays.

Thanks Stooks. A couple of us in the office wanted to place a lunch order to check them out but no menu on his webpage or facebook page. After seeing the imagines we decided on what we wanted and tried calling in a take order. We dialed (567) 312 8759 which is the number on his webpage to be greeted with a message that the number was changed and the new number is unknown. He is bragging on his facebook page that he has a new phone number and new menu but the menu isn't on the facebook page and the phone number on his facebook page is different than that on his webpage and we tried calling that with no answer,

It is really hard to feel sorry for a local business that fails when you the phone number on their website has changed and the recording says the new number is unknown and they don't answer the other phone number during peak lunch time on your grand reopening day.

I'm not sure I want to even give him another chance, it's obvious he doesn't know how to successfully run a business. I managed a few restaurants (a couple in that area) and I would have gotten the ax if I would have even thought of running the restaurants the way he is.

Finally visited Cilantros last night. We were heading out to grab dinner somewhere and when we drove by noticed it was open, it was about 9:15pm, and the door read 11am-___, so we headed in. Walk in and no one greets us, except a friendly customer at the bar, who told us to sit wherever we like. Ordered a couple of the House special margaritas (the secret ingredient is sprite), street tacos, and guacamole. Immediately after we place our order, the bartender started putting up chairs, including those at the bar... by 10:05 on Friday night, all of the empty chairs were up, and we didn't even have our tacos yet! The tacos were pretty good, but since we were being rushed out of the place, we just got boxes and took them home. Overall we were VERY disappointed, we live downtown and always love to support local business, but cannot see a reason to return to this place again. Cannot believe that they were rushing us out of there at 10pm on their "grand reopening" weekend, not sure how they will stay in business, even with a liquor license!

If they are still in business in three months, we'll give them a try.

Upso, as bad as their service is they'll be lucky to be around in three weeks, let alone three months.

Boyfriend thought maybe they were having some problems on opening day when I couldn't get through and thought I should give them another shot. We wanted to just dine at home and decided to try his delivery service he advertises on his facebook page and this time I called the number on the facebook page that he advertised as being their new number. Again no answer after calling a few times which I found absurd for a business that advertises delivery with no option to order on their website.

Boyfriend thought maybe it was a sign they were swamped and too busy to answer their phone and we both wanted margaritas to drink anyway so decided walk over around 7ish. There was only one other couple at a table and one person sitting at the bar.

We sat down and after almost ten minutes of no one coming over to our table to at least acknowledge us and take a drink order we walked out and decided to walk down Adams to Poco Loco and go for a coffee at Curio after or a night cab at Ottawa Tavern and Uber home. Poco Loco was the total opposite. No seats at the bar and 25 minute wait for a table.

I'm sure when he folds again he'll be one of these business owners that whines about people not supporting the local establishments.
I was told he had an auto business at one time on the north side and didn't know how to run that either.

On a brighter note we had brunch at Fowl and Fodder. Service and food were great even though the food was on the pricier side.

Based solely on the volume of bizarre stuff I've read on here about that place, I'd be fed up, too. Get it together, dude.

I met a friend for dinner at Poco Loco around 6:15. We figured it would be packed with Huntington center nearby and the Walleye's at home and that wasn't the case. Only people sitting at two tables. Based on the poor service I had there the first time they were open and the complaints I've been reading on here we sat at the bar figuring the service might be better and most of the bar seats were taken but it's a small bar that probably only seats about 12.

The service was great.

Friend ordered a beer that was an IPO from Maumee bay and liked it. I wanted a frozen raspberry margarita but was told they only had strawberry and pineapple flavors and I went with Strawberry. He used a mix out of a plastic bottle and it was made in a blender so they must not have much demand for frozen margaritas and it wasn't very 'sstrong and was too sweet.

Friend ordered two street tacos and liked them. I order the two enchilada dinner. The enchiladas weren't very big and the chicken was like that precubed Tyson stuff you buy at the grocery store and tasted processed, wasn't the shredded chicken like Poco loco uses. Also neither of ours came with Sour Cream or Guacaloma with the lettuce and tomato.

We weren't given salsa or chips but noticed people sitting next to us at the bar had them so I'm not sure if the bartender forgot (our orders came out pretty fast) or if they paid extra for them.

Someone came in to place a take out order and they were complaining that no one was answering the phone. The employee told her it was a new phone number and something was wrong with their phone line and they were hoping to get it fixed Monday.

They messed up my bill (they messed it up in May as well). My meal should have been $7 and the bill said $10 and there was also a $9 charge for chicken. The bartender went back to the kitchen and came back and said I was charged for the three enchilada dinner which he didn't even know they had, instead of the two enchilada dinner. When he put in the enchiladas were chicken it charged me for ordering a chicken dish.

The service has improved a lot over the first time they were open but I don't think I'll be back. They aren't any cheaper than San Marco's or Poco Loco and Poco Loco has a lot better food and more menu prices.

One nice thing about Cilantro's is you don't have to wait for a table:)

Cilantro's really needs to get their shit together. Girl in my office was craving a quesadilla for lunch and despite warnings from me and another person insisted on giving Cilantro's a shot since he was advertising online ordering on his facebook page and she wasn't in the mood to deal with getting her car out of the parking deck and having to find a spot when she returned.

She goes to his webpage and finds out that not only do you have to prepay your order with a credit card the total comes out wrong. The quesadilla was priced at $10 on his webpage (when you click on the menu it lists the items but not the price and you have to click on the individual item to find out the price) it was showing the total as $11.98 in her cart with no explanation. I told her I wouldn't trust giving out a credit card or personal address (why you need to give your address is beyond me for a pick up order) and to call. The phone is either still out of order or they aren't answering it.

She ended up deciding to go with someone else in our building to poco loco for their buffet. The other girl wanted to know the price of the buffet so they called and they answered the phone promptly. Jorge should try to poach some of the Poco Loco employees to show him how to run a Mexican restaurant.

My prior career was a restaurant manager and I never heard of an occupancy permit being illegal. Unless if he opened without one and got busted but that would be very difficult to do.

That location is becoming a cursed spot.

Popped into the new downtown Barry Bagels today. The setting and atmosphere is very big city, but the menu is pared down from their other locations.

What I thought was interesting is that the employees are actually Promedica employees, not Barry's. It's a true franchise location, where they've been given recipes and are buying product from Barry's but are doing things their own way. For example... no jalapeno cream cheese even though they know how to make it, and a limited selection of bagel flavors.

Regardless, way quicker than driving to west Toledo so I'm not going to complain!

I wasn't that impressed with Barry's. Very limited menu and the cookies were packaged and not made in store and menu prices weren't that reasonable.

I like PJ's better. Similar prices and they make their baked goods in house and better menu selection.

Plate One has the paper off their windows and you can see inside now. Looks like they are finally making some progress. The chairs she has by the front window are really sharp but not sure how smart it is having white chairs for a coffee house if something gets spilled on them. I am hoping she has the same menu she has in South Toledo.

I'm hoping she'll be open in early 2018

That could make sense. I doubt ProMedica is directly running any of their cafeterias or commissaries, so they probably just added this into their deal.

The place has been deader than any stretch of time I can recall and I've been a customer for many years. I've recently been the only customer there at my usual 12:30 time many days since Labor Day. JJ's used to sort of like Jominic's except they actually had M-F lines out the door during the lunch rush.

JJ also recently raised prices by about 20%. They're likely trying to compensate for decreased business.

Not sure how their insane investment in the Toledo hospital campus isnít also viewed as a positive for the city as a whole.

Iíve also noticed PM clinics popping up around town. Seems to me like they are generally investing in the city, and then doubling down on their new campus. Makes sense to me.

As for Jimmy Johns, not surprised.

We should have a drink and chat to bring you up to speed on the past 40 years of healthcare delivery, and Toledo health care and philanthropy history. They are forever entwined. It's a story worthy of a WGTE production, but nobody has the guts to fund it.

Let's just use this brief, yet dated analogy: if there were a Grumpy's on every corner, there would be a sandwich and salad certificate of need requirement. It would be unsustainable and other restaurants would have to go in the rebalancing. It wouldn't end hunger. It would end choice. But if the government funded free sandwiches and salads, and other payers paid for codes billed under the Lunch ICD-10, it would be tempting to try to garner the maximum possible available portion of those funds.

The march toward super-regionalism in payers is the march toward less choice and bad health care.

Meanwhile, Paramount Advantage may soon only be accepted in those clinics. Letters from non-network providers went out in the past month.

Once every restaurant is a Grumpys, they can institute the policy of only accepting the Grumpy Card. The Grumpy card may not be used "out of network." Ah hah! Build more Grumpys.

What I would give for a conversation with William Windus Knight about all of this. (The one born in 1878)

Upso, you're an OWE'er, right? I'm closing on a house there on Monday, and will move in around Xmas if all goes well. Is it quicker from OWE to go to the Oregon Kroger than the West Toledo markets? Toledo is such a weird city to navigate.

posted by swampprof on Nov 16, 2017 at 11:47:59 am     #

Hey swampprof, yes I am.

Closest grocery options are going to be the Seaway market at Bancroft and Cherry, and the Promedica shop at Madison and 18th in Uptown. Both are hit and misses.

In the past, if we were doing major grocery shopping we either hit Fresh Thyme or Fresh Market or the Andersons (RIP).

Weíve avoided Krogers generally. If you google map Krogers in Toledo, youíll see 4 that are all about equal distance from the OWE. The west Toledo one is the worst. Second worst is the Point Place location. The two in NW Toledo Alexis & Laskey are actually not bad, but getting there is just not convenient.

Recently we had to take our car to Matthewís Ford in Oregon for some body work. While out there, we stopped by the Oregon Krogers and were shocked with how nice it was. They updated it a couple of years ago and not only does it have pretty much everything you need, it also has an INSANE cheese selection as well as a liquor store.

Getting there is super easy, driving up bancroft to cherry and then the greenbelt parkway and over the 280 bridge. Itís worth checking out!

Sorry for the long answer but I hope it helps out. Welcome to the neighborhood!

+1 for the Oregon Kroger store.

For a quick item or two on the way home from work, I run into the PP Kroger. upso is correct - avoid it if possible.

The Kroger on Navarre in Oregon is a pretty amazing place for a large chain store. Again, upso is correct - the cheese selection entices me like a kid in a candy store. We especially enjoy being able to buy smaller portions that have been marked down because the ex-date is near. It's cheese for Heaven's sake. It will keep well beyond the ex date. Small wedges of various cheeses that I would never pay $20/lb for can be had for a few bucks. A great way to try new options.
