Free Eqypt

I went by the Westgate Shopping area. At the corner of Secor and Central there was a group of protesters holding up signs that said "Free Eqypt".

I wonder what is meant by "Free" Eqypt.

For example, is their concept of a "Free" Eqypt one in which the Coptic Christian minority is allowed to practice their religion without fear of attack, or at least with the hope that the police will respond if their churches are attacked? Under a "Free" Eqypt would Coptic Christians be allowed to try to peacefully convert non-Christian Eqyptians? Of would the "Free" Eqypt only extend to the Muslims of Eqypt?

What about the Jews? At one time there were sizable Jewish communities in both Alexandria and Cairo. During the various Arab-Isreali wars, the Jews of Eqypt were either expelled or compelled to leave Eqypt. Under a "Free" Eqypt, would Jews be invited (or allowed) to return?

Would their concept of a "Free" Eqypt include secular Muslims, who do NOT believe in the practice of Sharia Law? Would a "Free" Eqypt allow professional women to retain their jobs, women in general to drive cars, obtain advanced degrees, and so forth? Would it allow the free and open exchange of ideas with the West, including such concepts as universal sufferage, freedom of choice, and the protection of free will?

Would it allow dissent among the followers of Islam, just as the United States contains a variety of theologically opposed varieties of Christians, which by and large coexist peacefully?

What is a "Free" Eqypt ?

"free" to middle easterners means free gernades to throw at neighbors and free missles to shoot at each other along with AK-47's for all.

Not only is that country a world away on the map, it's a world away in life style and beliefs. Let's get out of the middle east for once and for all.

Oh, this one is easy to answer. A "Free Egypt" is one that's not subject to the machinations of our empire, nor any other. Nobody seems to respect national sovereignty until their own is threatened. so, what goes on in Egypt is none of our concern. Trying to attain a "Free USA" is what should concern us.

A "Free Egypt" is an Egypt where the people are free to choose the leaders they desire and are free to elect new leaders when they want change. Like GZ said, Americans would be rioting in the streets if another nation tried to keep us from determining our own destiny, Why should we deny the Egyptians the same right?
