YMCA specials?

Several months back I posted an article asking for recommendations on health fitness places.
Most people said the YMCA, and while I didnt have the money then I still want to get a membership.

A couple of the posts said that during the winter especially around xmas time, the YMCA offered "specials" to new people. Like waving the huge "joining fee" and possibly even discounted monthly fees.

My fiance and I are both interested, and while we don't have kids; I would still consider her and myself a family.

Any comments are appreciated, or tips.
Still waiting out since 70+ a month is too much, and the 100? 200? setup fee is way out of reach.

You can always apply to them for discounts/scholorships if you have trouble with the fees. I looked into that but decided even with that the Y is just way to costly.

The only promotion I've heard about for the Y is that non-members can use any of the Toledo area facilities free of charge for the next two weeks (November 23 - Dec 9). If you're interested, there are more details on their web site.

Are you sure that your $70+ month figure is correct?

We joined last December during the program where the joiner fee was waived, and then paid $65 a month for the year.

Now that our 12 months is almost up, they have dropped our monthly rate to $56 a month.

That's why I'm thinking perhaps your $70 a month figure is a little on the high side?

At any rate, the deals where they waive the joiner fee generally tend to be a year end thing and start getting publicized in December - if you watch closely, I wouldn't be surprised if they advertise it again this year soon.

Check your employer - both mine and my wife's businesses have deals with the Y for a discounted rate.

You might have problems convincing them that you and your "fiancee" are a family. It would me. You're not married, so to me that says you're two singles.

I forgot to follow up - I joined the Y in September when they waived the initiation fee. Best move of my life.

Ooh...billy, good call. I didn't notice the "fiancee" part.

I'm fairly certain that you'd have to be married to meet the requirements of the family membership. Which means that you'd each have to buy individual memberships.

Unless, of course, your wedding is coming up very soon and you're looking into joining after that.

This is the kind of thing that the domestic-partner registry should help with. The law takes effect in about a month then, if you are co-habitating, you can sign up and will hopefully qualify for family rate.

If you sign up before December 31st they're waiving the joiner fee and taking $50 off of your first month.

A max family membership normally costs approx. $65 a month, but with this deal your first month will only cost around $12.
